Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigates whether allografts or autografts are more effective in preventing the need for revisional ACL reconstruction, analyzing data from over 146,000 patients who underwent surgery between 2002 and 2021.
  • - Among the patients, 121,148 received allografts and 24,974 received autografts, with revision rates of 9.2% for allografts and 8.7% for autografts.
  • - The results suggest that choosing autografts for primary ACL reconstruction can significantly reduce the likelihood of needing revision surgery, particularly within the first year after the procedure.

Background: The long-term goal of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction is to prevent secondary osteoarthritis due to instability. Obesity itself is also a risk factor for osteoarthritis and shows an increase in its incidence, but little is known about the relationship between obesity and the outcome of ACL reconstruction.

Purpose/hypothesis: This study aimed to determine the relationship between the outcome of ACL reconstruction and obesity.

Article Synopsis
  • Early diagnosis and effective treatment of pulmonary embolism (PE) are critical after total knee arthroplasty (TKA), and this study investigates the role of pulse oximetry in identifying PE cases.
  • A total of 1,645 TKA patients were monitored, with CTPA used to confirm PE in 20 patients, highlighting a 1.2% prevalence, most identified via low oxygen saturation within the first two postoperative days.
  • Findings show that persistently low or suddenly decreased oxygen saturation readings were significant indicators of PE, with most diagnoses occurring in the early post-surgery period before symptoms developed.

Article Synopsis
  • The study compared the outcomes of combined posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) and posterolateral complex (PLC) reconstruction with isolated PCL reconstruction in patients with mild posterolateral knee laxity.
  • A review of 49 patients showed that while overall activity scores were similar between the two groups, those who had the combined surgery reported better subjective scores and showed less lateral knee instability.
  • The results suggest that in cases of PCL injuries with uncertain PLC damage, a combined reconstruction may offer better clinical and radiologic improvements than just PCL reconstruction alone.

This study aimed to analyze the risk factors for mortality of septic knee arthritis in Korea through a large nationwide data research. The National Health Insurance Service-Health Screening database was used to analyze 89,120 hospitalizations for septic knee arthritis between 2005 and 2018. In-hospital, thirty-day, and ninety-day mortality, and their association with patient's demographic factors, various comorbidities (i.

Article Synopsis
  • A new tool was created to help healthcare professionals quickly assess the prognosis of COVID-19 patients using data from a study of 5,596 patients, which was then validated with an additional cohort of 445 patients.
  • The model identifies key predictors such as age, sex, and specific symptoms, with an impressive accuracy rate (AUC values of 0.850 and 0.833) for determining the need for oxygen therapy and critical care.
  • The tool outperformed existing protocols in Korea, and an online application is available for calculating prognostic scores while ongoing validation updates are provided.

Article Synopsis
  • This study analyzed postoperative mortality rates and risk factors for over 560,000 patients who had total knee arthroplasty (TKA) in Korea from 2005 to 2018.
  • The mortality rates (in-hospital, ninety-day, and one-year) remained consistent over the years, with certain comorbidities, like cerebrovascular disease and renal disease, significantly increasing in-hospital mortality risk.
  • Key independent predictors for mortality included old age, male sex, and various health issues, indicating that patients with these conditions require enhanced perioperative care.

Background: Almost all Koreans are covered by mandatory national health insurance and are required to undergo health screening at least once every 2 years. We aimed to develop a machine learning model to predict the risk of developing hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) based on the screening results and insurance claim data.

Methods: The National Health Insurance Service-National Health Screening database was used for this study (NHIS-2020-2-146).

Backgroud: This study aims to investigate the frequency of distal femoral and popliteal arterial calcification and to evaluate the intraoperative and postoperative effects of arterial calcification in patients undergoing total knee arthroplasty using a tourniquet.

Methods: The records of 5,438 patients who had undergone primary total knee arthroplasty between January 2003 and January 2017 were retrospectively reviewed. We examined the preoperative radiographs of the knee from all patients for calcifications of the femoral and popliteal arteries.

Background: The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical and radiological outcomes of minimally invasive total knee arthroplasty (MIS-TKA) in obese patients.

Methods: We examined the records of 371 cases of MIS-TKA performed using the mini-midvastus approach from January 2006 to December 2006. According to body mass index (BMI), the cases were classified into group A (BMI < 25 kg/m, 114 knees), group B (25 kg/m ≤ BMI < 30 kg/m, 179 knees), and group C (BMI ≥ 30 kg/m, 78 knees).

Renal ischemia-reperfusion injury (IRI), an important cause of acute kidney injury (AKI), causes increased renal tubular injury and microvascular inflammation. 1,[Formula: see text]2,[Formula: see text]3,[Formula: see text]4,[Formula: see text]6-penta-O-galloyl-[Formula: see text]-D-glucose (PGG) from Galla rhois has anticancer, anti-oxidation and angiogenesis effects. We examined protective effects of PGG on IRI-induced acute AKI.

Arthritis damages the cartilage within joints, resulting in degenerative changes, including loss of function and joint instability. Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is a chronic inflammatory condition affecting the spine and bone-to-tendon attachment area within the sacroiliac joint leading to back pain and progressive spinal stiffness. In the final stages, AS causes hyperkyphosis-a condition closely tied to the human leukocyte antigen-B27 gene.

Purpose: This study aims to identify the effectiveness of the medial cortical line for attaining a more accurate tibial component alignment in proximal tibial resection using an extramedullary alignment rod.

Materials And Methods: The study examined 100 cases of total knee arthroplasty performed from December 2013 to February 2014 in a retrospective manner. On a preoperative anteroposterior (AP) radiograph of the entire tibia, we identified the medial cortical line that runs parallel to the tibial anatomical axis and passes the medial tibial spine, and measured the point where the medial cortical line crosses between the medial malleolus and the lateral malleolus in the ankle joint.

Recently, we experienced a case where the diagnosis and management of a deep femoral artery rupture was delayed. This vascular complication occurred during the insertion of a distal interlocking screw of a proximal femoral nail for the fixation of an intertrochanteric femur fracture. A 79-year-old male patient was diagnosed with a right intertrochanteric fracture after a fall.

Sibjotang (Shizaotang), traditional herbal medicine formula, which was first documented in the Shanghanlun, has long been prescribed for the treatment of impairment of the body fluid homeostasis. The purpose of the present study was to identify the effects of Sibjotang on the secretion of a cardiac hormone, atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP), one of the main hormones involved in the regulation of the body fluid and blood pressure homeostasis. Water extract of Sibjotang increased ANP secretion concomitantly with an increase in atrial dynamics in a concentration-dependent manner.
