Epidemiological evidence suggests that fruit and vegetable intake significantly positively affects cardiovascular health. Since vegetable juice is more accessible than raw vegetables, it attracts attention as a health functional food for circulatory diseases. Therefore, this study measured blood lipids, antioxidants, blood circulation indicators, and changes in the microbiome to confirm the effect of organic vegetable mixed juice (OVJ) on improving blood circulation.

We investigated the larvicidal potential of 10 plant essential oils (EOs) against the Asian tiger mosquito Aedes albopictus. Among the EOs, larvicidal activity against Ae. albopictus was strongest in those derived from massoia (Massoia aromatica) and nutmeg (Myristica fragrans).

Sulfonated cellulose nanocrystals (S-CNCs) can be used to encapsulate thyme white essential oil (EO) that is volatile and immiscible with water. S-CNCs form a Pickering emulsion (PE) with EOs and the micron-scale PEs are embedded in sodium alginate (SA) to form macroscale hydrogel beads. The incorporation of PEs with SA is confirmed with FTIR, XRD, SEM and confocal microscopic characterizations and the release behavior is monitored to understand the time-dependent biological activity of the EOs.

Article Synopsis
  • The study analyzed ECMO (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation) usage in Korea from 2004-2017, revealing a dramatic increase in procedures (170-fold) and associated costs (334-fold).
  • It found that ECMO applications primarily grew for heart/lung transplants and respiratory failure, with a noted reduction in cardiovascular surgery use.
  • Overall in-hospital mortality was 68.6%, but showed improvement over time, particularly for lung transplant and respiratory failure patients, while hospitals with higher case volumes had better survival rates.

Objectives: Thymectomy is the treatment of choice for thymomatous myasthenia gravis (MG) for both oncological and neurological aspects. However, only a few studies comprising small numbers of patients have investigated post-thymectomy neurological outcomes. We examined post-thymectomy long-term neurological outcomes and predictors of thymomatous MG using a multi-institutional database.

Cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) are produced by sulfonic acid hydrolysis and used for the formation of Pickering emulsion (PE) with thyme white essential oil (EO). Highly volatile and hydrophobic thyme white is encapsulated in PE by the amphiphilicity of CNCs. Encapsulation of EO in a CNC shell is determined by confocal microscopy with distinct fluorescent labelling.

Thoracoscopic resection of small subsolid nodules is challenging and requires preoperative localization. We investigated the efficacy, safety, and factors affecting accuracy in localizing pulmonary nodules with electromagnetic navigation bronchoscopy (ENB)-guided dye marking.Patients with small subsolid nodule(s) who underwent thoracoscopic resection after ENB-guided dye marking were retrospectively reviewed.

We report the rare case of a 58-year-old woman who was diagnosed with fungal empyema thoracis combined with osteoradionecrosis. After 32 months of home care followed by open window thoracostomy, thoracoplasty with serratus anterior muscle transposition and a latissimus dorsi myocutaneous flap was performed successfully. Although thoracoplasty is now rarely indicated, it is still the treatment of choice for the complete obliteration of thoracic spaces.

Objectives: The prognostic effects of epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) gene mutation on lung adenocarcinoma recurrence have not been well established. The relationship between EGFR gene mutation and recurrence dynamics of lung adenocarcinoma was investigated.

Methods: A total of 527 patients with complete resection for adenocarcinoma were reviewed retrospectively.

Background: The treatment of malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) is challenging, and multimodal treatment including surgery is recommended; however, the role of surgery is debated. The treatment outcomes of MPM in Korea have not been reported. We analyzed the outcomes of MPM in the context of multimodal treatment, including surgery.

Objectives: Robot-assisted minimally invasive oesophagectomy (RAMIE) enables radical, meticulous dissection of the oesophagus and lymph nodes. Our goal was to identify the effect of the learning curve for RAMIE when performing radical upper mediastinal dissection in patients with oesophageal cancer.

Methods: We conducted a retrospective review of a prospectively maintained database of patients who underwent RAMIE for oesophageal cancer between May 2008 and July 2016.

This study evaluated the larvicidal activity of 12 Apiaceae plant essential oils and their components against the Asian tiger mosquito, Aedes albopictus, and the inhibition of acetylcholine esterase with their components. Of the 12 plant essential oils tested, ajowan (Trachyspermum ammi), caraway seed (Carum carvi), carrot seed (Daucus carota), celery (Apium graveolens), cumin (Cuminum cyminum), dill (Anethum graveolens), and parsley (Petroselinum sativum) resulted in >90% larval mortality when used at 0.1 mg/mL.

Nanofibers are one-dimensional nanomaterial in fiber form with diameter less than 1 µm and an aspect ratio (length/diameter) larger than 100:1. Among the different types of nanoparticle-loaded nanofiber systems, nanofibers loaded with magnetic nanoparticles have gained much attention from biomedical scientists due to a synergistic effect obtained from the unique properties of both the nanofibers and magnetic nanoparticles. These magnetic nanoparticle-encapsulated or -embedded nanofiber systems can be used not only for imaging purposes but also for therapy.

The Pogo mouse is an autosomal recessive ataxic mutant that arose spontaneously in the inbred KJR/MsKist strain derived originally from Korean wild mice. The ataxic phenotype is characterized by difficulty in maintaining posture and side to side stability, faulty coordination between limbs and trunk, and the consequent inability to walk straight. In the present study, the cerebellar concentrations of glutamate and GABA were analyzed, since glutamate is a most prevalent excitatory neurotransmitter whereas gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) is one of the most abundant inhibitory neurotransmitters, which may be the main neurotransmitters related with the ataxia and epilepsy.

Using chorio-allantoic membranes (CAMs) of chick embryos and severe-combined-immunodeficient (SCID) mice, we investigated the effects of urokinase-type plasminogen-activator receptor (u-PAR) over-expression on the process of invasion and tumorigenicity. By the transfection of u-PAR cDNA, 3 u-PAR-over-expressing clones expressing 1.6- to 4.
