Article Synopsis
  • Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) have potential in medical therapies due to their ability to modulate immune responses, and this study focused on their use in treating atopic dermatitis (AD).
  • A phase 1 trial confirmed the safety of allogenic human bone marrow-derived clonal MSCs (hcMSCs) in patients, leading to a phase 2 trial that showed hcMSC treatment resulted in improved eczema severity after 12 weeks compared to a placebo.
  • Despite some mild adverse effects, hcMSC therapy had an acceptable safety profile, suggesting it could be effective, though further extensive research is needed to validate these initial findings.

Histiocytic sarcoma (HS) is a rare malignant neoplasm of presumed hematopoietic origin, showing morphologic and immunophenotypic evidence of histiocytic differentiation. A 61-year-old woman presented with an abdominal mass. She had a history of HS in both adrenal glands.

Frontal fibrosing alopecia (FFA) is a scarring alopecia with fronto-temporo-parietal hairline recession. Although no proven treatment for FFA exists, dutasteride has been suggested as a potential treatment option. We aimed to evaluate the therapeutic response of oral dutasteride in FFA patients.

Article Synopsis
  • * Researchers found a clear link between air pollution levels—specifically sulfur dioxide (SO) and nitrogen dioxide (NO)—and the incidence of PAD over a 1.8 million person-years period, noting that 5243 new PAD cases were identified.
  • * The analysis indicated that long-term exposure to these pollutants significantly raises the risk of PAD, with specific hazard ratios showing a notable increase in risk linked to higher concentrations of SO and NO, even after adjusting for other influencing factors.

To date, the relationship between air pollutants and venous thromboembolism (VTE) has not been well established. Our aim is to investigate the association between ambient air pollutants and the incidence of VTE using the Korean National Health Insurance Service-National Health Screening Cohort (NHIS-HEALS) database. From 2003 to 2015, 338,616 subjects from the general population not previously diagnosed with VTE were included.

Background: To date, little evidence is available to determine whether atopic dermatitis (AD) can be caused by exposure to air pollutants, including gases and particulate matter.

Objective: We aimed to evaluate the relationship between air pollutants and incidence of AD using the National Health Insurance Service-National Sample Cohort database.

Methods: We included 209,168 subjects from the general population previously not diagnosed with AD between 2008 and 2013.

We report a 29-year-old female with a one-month history of non-healing multiple erythematous to violaceous plaques with crusts over both legs and feet. Tender, scarring ulcers with surrounding erythema were present. The clinical manifestation, together with histopathologic findings of fibrinoid plugs within vascular lumens and walls, as well as red blood cell extravasation, led to diagnosis of livedoid vasculopathy.

Viral warts are benign proliferations of the epithelium caused by human papilloma virus (HPV) infection. Diverse therapeutic options are available for viral warts, depending on extension and severity of the disease. We report a case of a 19-year-old man who presented with multiple viral warts on hands and feet for 5 years.

Solitary fibrous tumors (SFT) are uncommon mesenchymal tumors. SFT have several synonyms including localized fibrous tumor, benign mesothelioma, localized fibrous mesothelioma, and submesothelial fibroma. SFT usually occur in the pleura or other serosal surfaces, but SFT can also develop in extrapleural areas including the nasal cavity, orbit, retroperitoneum, and pelvis.

Nephrogenic systemic fibrosis (NSF) is a progressive systemic fibrosing disease that may occur after gadolinium contrast exposure. It can lead to severe complications and even death. NSF is highly prevalent among patients with advanced chronic kidney disease (CKD).

Recently, herpes zoster (HZ) has been identified as a risk factor for stroke, but there have been few studies on the relationship between HZ and other cardiovascular diseases (CVD), including myocardial infarction (MI) and heart failure (HF). The purpose of this study was to investigate the risk of HZ occurrence after CVD and the occurrence of CVD after HZ. This was a retrospective case-control study based on the National Health Insurance System claims database for 20 311 patients with HZ and 13 980 patients with CVD and 1:5 age- and sex-matched control subjects for each from January 2006 to December 2013.

Study Objectives: The aim of our study was to investigate the risk of alopecia areata occurrence in patients with sleep disorders.

Methods: This study was a retrospective cohort study based on the National Health Insurance Service-National Sample Cohort database of patients with a sleep disorder, along with age- and sex-matched control subjects from 2003 to 2013. The hazard ratio (HR) of alopecia areata was compared between the patients with sleep disorders and control subjects adjusting comorbid diseases which could affect the incidence of alopecia areata.

Spitz nevus commonly appears as a solitary lesion. A 12-year-old male patient presented with a 6-month history of several pigmented lesions on his trunk and lower extremities. He had undergone chemoradiotherapy and unrelated umbilical cord blood transplantation against recurring acute lymphoblastic leukemia for 6 years.
