Objective: There is evidence indicating that the risk of respiratory distress syndrome is reduced in preterm neonates exposed to intra-amniotic infection and/or inflammation. We hypothesised that foetal lung maturation promoted by intra-amniotic infection and/or inflammation results in elevated lamellar body count (LBC) in amniotic fluid (AF). This study aimed to determine the relationship between LBC in AF and intra-amniotic infection and/or inflammation in patients with threatened preterm birth.

  • Enpp2 is an enzyme that converts LPC to LPA and plays a crucial role in various biological functions, particularly in dendritic cells (DCs), which are vital for activating T-cells.
  • Research showed that high levels of Enpp2 in mature DCs (mDCs) enhanced their migratory ability, while knocking it down impaired their function.
  • The study suggests that regulating Enpp2 could boost DC migration to lymph nodes, potentially improving the effectiveness of cancer vaccines that utilize DCs.

Article Synopsis
  • The study assessed the safety and tolerability of higher doses of hESC-derived RPE cells injected subretinally in minipigs, using doses of 60 and 120 × 10 cells/150 μL.
  • Time-course examinations at Weeks 4, 8, and 12 post-surgery indicated gradual changes in retinal blebs and showed cell clusters at the injection site, likely representing an immune response rather than direct evidence of transplanted cells.
  • Overall, the results indicated that the subretinal injections of the higher doses of hESC-derived RPE cells were well-tolerated and deemed safe for the minipigs involved in the study.

The Sleeping Beauty (SB) transposon system is non-viral and uses insertional mutagenesis, resulting in the permanent expression of transferred genes. Although the SB transposon is a useful method for establishing a mouse tumor model, there has been difficulty in using this method to generate tumors in the prostate. In the present study, electroporation was used to enhance the transfection efficiency of the SB transposon.

Zinc oxide is known as a promising material for sensing devices due to its piezoelectric properties. In particular, the alignment of ZnO nanostructures into ordered nanoarrays is expected to improve the device sensitivity due to the large surface area which can be utilized to capture significant quantities of gas particles. However, ZnO nanorods are difficult to grow on the quartz substrate with well-ordered shape.
