Background: In foot and ankle infections, cases with apparent soft-tissue necrosis or purulent fluid collections definitely require surgical treatments. However, clinicians often have difficulty in determining whether to perform surgery in ambiguous cases without these findings. This study aimed to investigate the impact of the delta neutrophil index as a predictor of surgical treatment in patients with foot and ankle infections.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the risk of ipsilateral secondary femoral fractures after using either partial or full-length nails for treating atypical subtrochanteric femoral fractures (ASFF).
  • A total of 45 patients were analyzed, with no ipsilateral fractures reported post-surgery and no significant differences in recovery metrics like time to union or leg length discrepancy between nail types.
  • The findings suggest that full-length nails may not be necessary for ASFF treatment, highlighting a lower incidence of complications such as metal failure and iatrogenic fractures with partial-length nails.
