Article Synopsis
  • Chili (Capsicum annuum L.) is a valuable global crop, particularly in South Korea, where it faces significant economic losses due to anthracnose caused by various Colletotrichum species.
  • In August 2022, unusual symptoms like sunken black lesions were observed on chili fruits in Yereonggwang, affecting about 1% of the fruits in a tested area.
  • To identify the pathogen, fruits were collected and treated to isolate fungi, leading to five isolates identified as Colletotrichum spp., with their characteristics matching reported features of C. sojae.

The Colletotrichum gloeosporioides species complex includes many phytopathogenic species, causing anthracnose disease on a wide range of host plants and appearing to be globally distributed. Seventy-one Colletotrichum isolates in the complex from different plants and geographic regions in Korea were preserved in the Korean Agricultural Culture Collection (KACC). Most of them had been identified based on hosts and morphological features, this could lead to inaccurate species names.

Endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress is shown to promote nucleus pulposus (NP) cell apoptosis and intervertebral disc degeneration. However, little is known about ER stress regulation by the hypoxic disc microenvironment and its contribution to extracellular matrix homeostasis. NP cells were cultured under hypoxia (1% partial pressure of oxygen) to assess ER stress status, and gain-of-function and loss-of-function approaches were used to assess the role of hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF)-1α in this pathway.
