Epilepsy's impact on cardiovascular function and autonomic regulation, including heart-rate variability, is complex and may contribute to sudden unexpected death in epilepsy (SUDEP). Lateralization of autonomic control in the brain remains the subject of debate; nevertheless, ultra-short-term heart-rate variability (HRV) analysis is a useful tool for understanding the pathophysiology of autonomic dysfunction in epilepsy patients. A retrospective study reviewed medical records of patients with temporal lobe epilepsy who underwent presurgical evaluations.

Article Synopsis
  • Encapsulating platinum nanoparticles in a carbon shell enhances their stability by preventing dissolution and clumping.* -
  • The study focused on how the carbon shell forms around the platinum core and identified the carbon-to-platinum precursor ratio as a key factor influencing the catalyst's properties.* -
  • Various analysis techniques were used to examine the catalysts' structures and test their electrochemical activity and stability, revealing a relationship between nitrogen-to-platinum ratios and their characteristics.*

Nitrogen-doped carbon-encapsulated non-noble metals are promising electrocatalytic alternatives to Pt for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Herein, we describe the efficient synthesis of nitrogen- and fluorine-doped carbon-encapsulated Fe/FeC (NFC@Fe/FeC) crystals from a Fe-poly(aniline-fluoro-aniline) co-polymer and demonstrate their use as efficient ORR electrocatalysts in acidic and alkaline environments. X-ray diffraction patterns, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, Raman spectra, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy are used to determine the structural properties of NFC@Fe/FeC.
