Article Synopsis
  • Inhaled xenon combined with hypothermia was tested on comatose patients who survived out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) to see if it could protect gray matter in the brain.
  • A study of 110 patients found that those who received inhaled xenon and temperature management showed less reduction in brain gray matter volume, especially in areas like the amygdala and temporal gyrus, compared to those who received only temperature management.
  • The results suggest that inhaled xenon can help preserve brain structure in this patient group, highlighting its potential therapeutic benefits.

Background: Screening for hazardous alcohol use and performing brief interventions (BIs) are recommended to reduce alcohol-related negative health consequences. We aimed to compare the effectiveness (defined as an at least 10% absolute difference) of BI with usual care in reducing alcohol intake in intensive care unit survivors with history of hazardous alcohol use.

Methods: We used Alcohol Use Disorder Identification Test-Consumption (AUDIT-C) score to assess history of alcohol use.

Background: We investigated the prevalence and effects of hazardous alcohol consumption on perioperative complications in cardiac surgery patients. Preoperative hazardous alcohol consumption has been associated with an increased risk of postoperative complications in noncardiac patient populations.

Methods: We retrospectively collected data from the Finnish Intensive Care Consortium database and electronic patient records on all cardiac surgery patients treated in the intensive care units (ICUs) of Helsinki University Hospital (n = 919) during 2017.

Metformin, the most frequently prescribed medicine for the management of type 2 diabetes, has been shown to reduce cardiovascular events in diabetic patients in pre-clinical and clinical studies. The present work reports the design, synthesis, and biological assessment of the impact of six benzenesulfonamide biguanides on various aspects of hemostasis, cell function, red blood cell integrity (RBC), and their ability to uptake glucose in human umbilical endothelial cells (HUVECs). It was found that all synthesized o- and m-benzenesulfonamides, particularly derivatives with nitro (3) and amino groups (4), are characterized by a good safety profile in HUVECs, which was further confirmed in the cellular integrity studies.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to compare the effectiveness of brain imaging techniques (DTI, 1H-MRS), serum NSE, and motor scores in predicting poor neurological outcomes in comatose patients after out-of-hospital cardiac arrest.
  • Results showed that the predictive accuracy of these methods was not significantly better than the motor score alone, although combining data from multiple methods slightly improved accuracy.
  • Ultimately, while there is a small benefit in using advanced imaging together with motor scores and seizures for prediction, the complexity and cost make routine use of DTI/MRS in clinical settings unnecessary.

Background Studies demonstrate that up to one-third of intensive care unit (ICU) admissions are directly or indirectly related to alcohol. Screening for alcohol use is not routine. This study examined the prevalence of elevated %CDT (carbohydrate-deficient transferrin) and above risk-level AUDIT-C (Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test, Consumption) in patients admitted to ICU.

Background: Little is known about the consequences of apathy in dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB), because previous research on apathy in dementia focused mainly on Alzheimer's disease (AD).

Methods: In this longitudinal study, we included patients with AD (n = 128) and patients with DLB (n = 81). At baseline, we analyzed the associations between apathy and cognition in the total sample and in AD and DLB separately.

Introduction: There are relatively few longitudinal studies on the differences in cognitive decline between Alzheimer's disease (AD) and dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB), and the majority of existing studies have suboptimal designs.

Aim: We investigated the differences in cognitive decline in AD compared to DLB over 4 years and cognitive domain predictors of progression.

Methods: In a longitudinal study, 266 patients with first-time diagnosis of mild dementia were included and followed annually.

Background: The authors previously reported that inhaled xenon combined with hypothermia attenuates brain white matter injury in comatose survivors of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA).

Objectives: A pre-defined secondary objective was to assess the effect of inhaled xenon on myocardial ischemic damage in the same study population.

Methods: A total of 110 comatose patients who had experienced OHCA from a cardiac cause were randomized to receive either inhaled xenon (40% end-tidal concentration) combined with hypothermia (33°C) for 24 h (n = 55; xenon group) or hypothermia treatment alone (n = 55; control group).

Objectives: REM sleep behavior disorder (RBD) is associated with cognitive dysfunctions and is a risk factor for development of mild cognitive impairment and dementia. However, it is unknown whether RBD is associated with faster cognitive decline in already established dementia. The main goal of this study was to determine if patients with mild dementia with and without RBD differ in progression rate and in specific neuropsychological measures over 4-year follow-up.
