Purpose: To investigate the risk factors for corneal endothelial cell density (ECD) loss of 2 types of iris-fixated phakic intraocular lenses (pIOL) and indicate the cutoff values for preventing irreversible ECD loss after explantation.

Design: The retrospective, comparative, clinical cohort study.

Methods: Total 114 eyes of 61 patients were included in this study.

Purpose: To evaluate the refractive outcomes after ultrathin Descemet stripping automated endothelial keratoplasty (UT-DSAEK) combined with phacoemulsification and intraocular lens implantation (triple procedure) in the South Korean population.

Methods: This retrospective observational study included 37 eyes of 36 patients who underwent the UT-DSAEK triple procedure between 2012 and 2021 in a single tertiary hospital. Preoperative and postoperative refractive outcomes and endothelial parameters at 1, 3, 6, and 12 months were observed.

Article Synopsis
  • - This study investigates the factors related to the loss of corneal endothelial cell density (ECD) in patients who had implantable collamer lens (ICL) explantation at Seoul St. Mary's Hospital.
  • - The analysis included 93 eyes from 50 patients, revealing that high vaulting, low anterior chamber angle, and iris pigmentation are correlated with ECD loss after surgery, with 15.1% of eyes showing a decrease in ECD 6 months postoperatively.
  • - The research indicates that monitoring ECD and considering factors like vaulting can help prevent ECD loss, with a specific threshold of 1722 cells/mm² identified as a protective measure.

Although depression and glaucoma share several common pathophysiology, the risk of glaucoma in patients with depression has not been reported. Thus, we investigated the effect of depressive symptom and depressive disorder on glaucoma incidence. In this nationwide population-based cohort study, all subjects receiving the National Screening Program at the age of 66 during 2009-2014 were included.

Rationale: We emphasize the importance of using anterior optical coherence tomography (OCT) to understand the details of iatrogenic Descemet's membrane detachment (DMD) in 3 dimensions; this allows appropriate air injection into the anterior chamber in terms of both direction and method.

Patients Concerns: A 74-year-old Korean female presented with progressive visual impairment. On slit-lamp examination, an iridocorneal adhesion was observed, associated with a full-thickness corneal opacity 3.

The 14-3-3ζ protein plays a key role in regulation of cellular processes. In the present study, we showed that 14-3-3ζ protein was significantly overexpressed in hepatoma cell lines and human tumorous tissues of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients. Knockdown with RNA interference in hepatoma cell lines with high 14-3-3ζ expression suppressed tumor cell proliferation via activation of c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK) and p38/MAPK.

Gankyrin is an oncoprotein containing seven ankyrin repeats that is overexpressed in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Gankyrin binds to Mdm2, which results in accelerated ubiquitylation via degradation of p53, and it also plays an important role in cell proliferation. However, little is known about the relationships between p53 levels, cell proliferation, and gankyrin over-expression.
