Background: Although routine coagulation tests, such as prothrombin time (PT) and activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT) are performed before surgery to identify the risk of perioperative bleeding, bleeding complications are rare in minor surgeries, and false-positive results are often observed. Therefore, this study aimed to analyze the common causes of abnormal results of preoperative coagulation tests in previously healthy children undergoing elective minor surgery and determine the usefulness of performing these tests. Additionally, it aimed to identify the distribution of factor XII activity in children with prolonged aPTT.

Many laparoscopic techniques have been developed to repair inguinal hernia in children using either an intraperitoneal or extraperitoneal approach. Percutaneous internal ring suturing (PIRS) is one of the extracorporeal suture techniques. It could be performed with comparable surgical complication or recurrence rates and excellent cosmetic results.

Article Synopsis
  • The study focuses on benign transient non-organic ileus of neonates (BTNIN), a condition that mimics Hirschsprung's disease but does not involve aganglionic bowel.
  • A review of 19 neonates treated for BTNIN revealed common symptoms like abdominal distension and normal rectal biopsy findings, distinguishing it from Hirschsprung's disease.
  • The results showed that conservative treatment was effective, with symptoms resolving by an average age of 4.9 months and highlighting the importance of specific diagnostic tests in differentiating the two conditions.

Article Synopsis
  • This study assessed the effectiveness of laparoscopic surgery in children suffering from generalized peritonitis due to perforated appendicitis.
  • The research analyzed medical records from 99 patients who underwent laparoscopic appendectomy and 87 who had open appendectomy, highlighting that laparoscopic methods had lower rates of wound infection and intestinal obstruction.
  • The findings suggest that laparoscopic appendectomy is a viable option, with a manageable conversion rate to open surgery and similar complication rates to those seen in traditional open procedures.
