Objective: The association of sorbitol intake with maintaining healthy body weight through the gut microbiome during early life was investigated.

Research Methods And Procedures: Sorbitol intake, body mass index (BMI), and fecal samples were collected in the total of 369 pregnant women with their infants (aged 4 months to 5 years) from the Taipei Mother-Infant Nutrition Cohort and 1946 children and adolescents (aged 6-18 years) from the Taiwan Puberty Longitudinal Study. The BMI-z score in sorbitol users was compared to that in sorbitol nonusers using generalized linear mixed model.

Understanding the Genetic Architecture of Vitamin Status Biomarkers in the Genome-Wide Association Study Era: Biological Insights and Clinical Significance.

Vitamins play an intrinsic role in human health and are targets for clinical intervention through dietary or pharmacological approaches. Biomarkers of vitamin status are complex traits, measurable phenotypes that arise from an interplay between dietary and other environmental factors with a genetic component that is polygenic, meaning many genes are plausibly involved. Studying these genetic influences will improve our knowledge of fundamental vitamin biochemistry, refine estimates of the effects of vitamins on human health, and may in future prove clinically actionable.

DINGO: increasing the power of locus discovery in maternal and fetal genome-wide association studies of perinatal traits.

Perinatal traits are influenced by fetal and maternal genomes. We investigate the performance of three strategies to detect loci in maternal and fetal genome-wide association studies (GWASs) of the same quantitative trait: (i) the traditional strategy of analysing maternal and fetal GWASs separately; (ii) a two-degree-of-freedom test which combines information from maternal and fetal GWASs; and (iii) a one-degree-of-freedom test where signals from maternal and fetal GWASs are meta-analysed together conditional on estimated sample overlap. We demonstrate that the optimal strategy depends on the extent of sample overlap, correlation between phenotypes, whether loci exhibit fetal and/or maternal effects, and whether these effects are directionally concordant.

The accuracy of anal self- and companion exams among sexual minority men and transgender women: a prospective analysis.

Background: Squamous cell carcinoma of the anus (SCCA) annual incidence among sexual minority men with and without HIV is 85/100,000 and 19/100,000 persons, respectively, which is significantly higher than the overall incidence (2/100,000). Incidence may also be higher in transgender women. Since SCCA tumours average ≥30 mm at diagnosis, we assessed the accuracy of individuals to self-detect smaller anal abnormalities.

New Insights into Polygenic Score-Lifestyle Interactions for Cardiometabolic Risk Factors from Genome-Wide Interaction Analyses.

The relationship between lifestyles and cardiometabolic outcomes varies between individuals. In 382,275 UK Biobank Europeans, we investigate how lifestyles interact with polygenic scores (PGS) of cardiometabolic risk factors. We identify six interactions (PGS for body mass index with meat diet, physical activity, sedentary behaviour and insomnia; PGS for high-density lipoprotein cholesterol with sedentary behaviour; PGS for triglycerides with meat diet) in multivariable linear regression models including an interaction term and show stronger associations between lifestyles and cardiometabolic risk factors among individuals with high PGSs than those with low PGSs.
