Scalp-related symptoms such as dandruff and itching are common with diverse underlying etiologies. We previously proposed a novel classification and scoring system for scalp conditions, called the scalp photographic index (SPI); it grades five scalp features using trichoscopic images with good reliability. However, it requires trained evaluators.

Enterovirus A71 (EV71), coxsackievirus A16 (CVA16), and coxsackievirus B3 (CVB3) are pathogenic members of the family that cause a range of diseases, including severe central nervous system complications, myocarditis, and pancreatitis. Despite the considerable public health impact of these viruses, no approved antiviral treatments are currently available. In the present study, we confirmed the potential of saucerneol, a compound derived from , as an antiviral agent against EV71, CVA16, and CVB3.

Importance: Estimating the effects of dementia on care use and financial outcomes is timely, as the population with dementia will more than double in the next few decades.

Objective: To determine the incremental changes associated with dementia in regard to older adults' care use and assess financial consequences for individuals, families, and society.

Design, Setting, And Participants: This population-based cohort study included propensity score matching on national, longitudinal data using extensive baseline variables of sociodemographic characteristics, economic status, family availability, health conditions, disability status, and outpatient care use among 2 groups of US adults aged 55 years or older who did not have dementia.

The protein extract of hydrolyzed with Alcalase and Flavourzyme was found to have multi-functional properties, including total antioxidant capacity (TAC), collagenase inhibitory, and antibacterial activities. The #5 fraction (SP5) and #7 fraction (SP7) of hydrolysate from cation-exchange chromatography displayed significantly high TAC, collagenase inhibitory, and antibacterial effects against , and only the Q3 fraction from anion-exchange chromatography displayed high multi-functional activities. Eight of 42 peptides identified by MALDI-TOF/MS and Q-TOF/MS/MS were selected from the results for screening with molecular docking on target proteins and were then synthesized.

Background: Having an adult child living with or nearby may prevent parents with disability from moving to nursing homes and reduce the use of paid care services. Despite the profound implications for care resources and utilization among older adults, there is no measure summarizing the spatial availability of all adult children for an older adult. Our study aims to develop a holistic measure of adult children's spatial availability to assess potential family care resources for older adults with disability.

Article Synopsis
  • This study investigates how sociodemographic factors affect employment changes in adult children when their parents are diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease and related dementia (ADRD).
  • Using data from the Health and Retirement Study, it looks at adults aged 50-70 over several years to analyze employment shifts tied to parental ADRD.
  • Results show that while overall employment wasn't significantly affected, those with lower education levels faced different challenges: sons were more likely to stop working entirely, while daughters tended to reduce their work hours, particularly as sons aged.

Background And Objectives: Among the cognitively impaired, arts engagement is associated with improved neurocognitive symptoms. Less is known about arts engagement as a potentially modifiable lifestyle factor to prevent or slow cognitive decline. Our aim was to evaluate the association between arts event attendance and cognition.

Article Synopsis
  • Caregiving for older adults with dementia significantly limits social participation, with about 33.3% of caregivers reporting restrictions compared to just 16.0% for those caring for older adults without dementia.
  • The study utilized data from the 2017 National Health and Aging Trends Study to analyze these restrictions, highlighting a notable disparity, especially among White, non-Hispanic caregivers.
  • Increased caregiving hours contribute to these limitations, as caregivers for individuals with dementia spend an average of 104 hours per month compared to 60 hours for those without dementia, indicating a need for strategies to support caregiver social engagement.

Objectives: Disability in the United States has not improved in recent decades. Comparing temporal trends in disability prevalence across different income groups, both within and between the United States and England, would inform public policy aimed at reducing disparities in disability.

Methods: Using the Health and Retirement Study and the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing, we estimated annual percent change from 2002 to 2016 in disability among community-dwelling adults (197,021 person-years of observations).

Objectives: Pandemic-specific changes to the caregiving context (e.g., attempts to reduce exposure, physical distancing requirements) may lead to changes in care provision.

Adult children are among the most frequent providers for community-dwelling older adults with a disability. This report assesses the extent to which help received from an adult child by older persons with a disability is contingent on the distance between their residences. Using the national Panel Study of Income Dynamics, we selected persons 55 and older with a disability and their adult children (810 older adults; 1767 dyads of older adult - adult child pairs).

Despite the important role that family members can play in dementia care, little is known about the association between the availability of family members and the type of care, informal (unpaid) or formal (paid), that is actually delivered to older adults with dementia in the US. Using data about older adults with dementia from the Health and Retirement Study, we found significantly lower spousal availability but greater adult child availability among women versus men, non-Hispanic Blacks versus non-Hispanic Whites, and people with lower versus higher socioeconomic status. Adults with dementia and disability who have greater family availability were significantly more likely to receive informal care and less likely to use formal care.

This paper assessed the extent to which physical inactivity accounts for the relationship between the crime rate and prevalence of type 2 diabetes in the United States. Using 2018 US county-level data, we compared unadjusted and adjusted prevalence of type 2 diabetes between high and low crime counties for 2,966 US counties. Average causal mediating effects of residents' reported physical inactivity were estimated for each comparison.

Background: Loneliness is common in dementia caregivers as cognitive impairment (CI) alters marital and social relationships. Unexplored is how an individual's loneliness is affected at earlier, more ambiguous, periods of their spouse's CI.

Methods: Using the Health and Retirement Study, our study participants included 2,206 coupled individuals with normal cognitive function at the 2006/8 baseline.

Objective: This brief report presents contemporary national estimates of the spatial distance between residences of parents and adult children in the United States, including distance to one's nearest parent and/or adult child and whether one lives near all of their parents and adult children.

Background: The most recent national estimates of parent-child spatial proximity come from data for the early 1990s. Moreover, research has rarely assessed spatial clustering of all parents and adult children.

Importance: Socioeconomic differences in life expectancy, health, and disability have been found in European countries as well as in the US. Identifying the extent and pattern of health disparities, both within and across the US and England, may be important for informing public health and public policy aimed at reducing these disparities.

Objective: To compare the health of US adults aged 55 to 64 years with the health of their peers in England across the high and low ranges of income in each country.

Coxsackievirus B3 (CVB3) is an important human pathogen associated with the development of acute pancreatitis, myocarditis, and type 1 diabetes. Currently, no vaccines or antiviral therapeutics are approved for the prevention and treatment of CVB3 infection. We found that Saururus chinensis Baill extract showed critical antiviral activity against CVB3 infection in vitro.

Objective: The aim of this study was to examine the extent to which an exposure to disaster is associated with change in health behaviors.

Methods: Federal disaster declarations were matched at the county-level to self-reported behaviors for participants in the Health and Retirement Study (HRS), 2000-2014. Multivariable logistic regression was used to evaluate the relationship between disaster and change in physical activity, body mass index (BMI), and cigarette smoking.
