12 Lewis rats were inoculated with a guinea pig spinal cord tissue preparation. They developed experimental allergic encephalomyelitis (EAE) after 12-14 days manifested by weight loss, tail flaccidity, ataxia, hind limb paresis or paralysis and urinary incontinence. Concomitantly with EAE, all animals developed vestibular hyperreactivity (VH) of canal and otolith reflexes.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFA randomized pilot-study on patients with resectable non small-cell lung carcinoma was conducted from December 1971 to May 1976 inclusive. Patients were randomly assigned to receive preoperative irradiation to the mediastinum followed by surgery (RT + S), or to be treated by surgery only (SO). A total of 33 patients clinically staged as T1-2, N0, M0 histologically confirmed bronchus carcinoma were entered onto the study.

One hundred and seventy-four patients with early glottic cancer received radiation therapy on the kV250 and cobalt 60 machines. Crude survival rates at 5, 10 and 15 years were 83%, 73% and 60%, respectively. Salvage surgery for locoregional recurrences was successful in 85% of the patients.

Twelve Lewis rats were inoculated with a guinea pig spinal cord tissue preparation. They developed experimental allergic encephalomyelitis (EAE) after 12-14 days, manifested by weight loss, tail flaccidity, ataxia, hind limb paresis and incontinence. The CNS lesions are produced in this animal model on the basis of inflammatory demyelination, which provides a useful model for multiple sclerosis.

A new pedigree with 9 obligate and 10 probable female carriers of the X-linked mixed deafness syndrome is presented. In the male the syndrome is characterized by a perilymphatic gusher during stapes surgery, a severe progressive mixed hearing loss and lack or strong reduction of vestibular responses. Four of the 9 obligate heterozygote females show similar but much milder audiological abnormalities.

Selected prognostic factors were examined. The 5-year overall survival for the malignant epithelial tumours was 35%.

Data on middle ear disease and follow-up was recorded and analysed in 2225 ears operated on for chronic otitis media between 1958 and 1975. The closure rate of tympanic membrane perforations (70-80%) was not influenced by the presence of otorrhoea, but it was significantly lower in patients aged below 15 or over 40 yr and especially when tympanic membrane homograft had been used. For all types of tympanoplasty the mean improvement in air-conduction threshold was most marked at the lower frequencies, being some 10 dB in Type I, 15 dB in Type II and 8 dB in Type III and IV and it decreased by some 3 dB per octave.

Flash-induced nystagmus (FIN) was found more often in albino than in pigmented rabbits. Incremental and decremental phase mainly showed exponential change in SPV, but linear change was seen as well with apparent time constant of 5-40 sec. FIN was unaltered by rendering the stimulated eye akinetic.

One hundred ten patients with predominantly advanced laryngeal carcinoma were treated in the period 1969-1978 with planned preoperative radiation therapy followed by surgery. Site distribution was: 63 supraglottic, 26 glottic, 15 transglottic and 6 subglottic. There were 4 Stage II patients, 66 Stage III and 40 Stage IV.

A new parameter is introduced in active anterior rhinomanometry: the lateralization percentage, calculated as (right flow--left flow)/(right flow + left flow) x 100%. The flow was measured at 15 mm H2O pressure difference after induced shrinkage of the nasal mucosa. Two groups of subjects were studied.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFA sample of 371 patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the larynx treated over a 17-year period has been statistically analysed. Age is shown to be an important prognostic parameter. Apart from the well-established additional risk factors, such as fixed cord, extension of the tumour beyond the larynx, fixed lymph nodes, distant metastasis and other malignancies, age by itself seems to be a crucial factor.

A survey of 63 patients with malignant tumour of the nasopharynx, treated over a 20-year period (1958-1977) is presented. The major types of tumour were squamous cell and anaplastic carcinoma (including lymphoepithelioma) and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. In some patients other tumours were found, such as cylindroma, rhabdomyosarcoma and extramedullary plasmocytoma.

The caloric response to either water or air stimulation has been compared in 10 normal subjects. The nystagmus signals have been analysed by digital signal processing. A statistical analysis of slow-phase velocity has been conducted.

A method of nystagmus analysis has been developed for clinical and research purposes. Optimum flexibility of analysis is indicated to cope with the problematic signals frequently encountered in pathology. Different modes of analysis may be obtained, varying from fully automatic to step-by-step interactive analysis.

The autonomic innervation of the nasal mucosa has been studied in normal rats and in rats in which the supplying nerves had seen selectively transected; postoperative survival times varied from 2 weeks up to 18 months. The vascular structures appeared to be innervated both by acetylcholinesterase- and noradrenalin-containing fibres. Furthermore a nerve plexus consisting of both types of fibres was observed in the subepithelial region.
