Objective: Sonodynamic therapy (SDT) is gaining attention as a promising new noninvasive brain tumor treatment that targets and selectively kills tumor cells, with limited side effects. This review examines the mechanisms of SDT and ongoing clinical trials looking at optimization of sonication parameters for potential treatment of glioblastoma (GBM) and diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma (DIPG). The results in the first patient with recurrent GBM treated at the Mayo Clinic are briefly discussed.

Background: Hypertension is one of the most important cardiovascular disease risk factors and affects >100 million American adults. Hypertension-related health inequities are abundant in Black communities as Black individuals are more likely to use the emergency department (ED) for chronic disease-related ambulatory care, which is strongly linked to lower blood pressure (BP) control, diminished awareness of hypertension, and adverse cardiovascular events. To reduce hypertension-related health disparities, we developed MI-BP, a culturally tailored multibehavior mobile health intervention that targeted behaviors of BP self-monitoring, physical activity, sodium intake, and medication adherence in Black individuals with uncontrolled hypertension recruited from ED and community-based settings.

Objective: Cerebellar pilocytic astrocytomas (cPAs) in childhood have long been recognized to have a good prognosis after total resection, but the outcome after incomplete resective surgery remains largely unpredictable, with the incidence of radiological progressive disease ranging from 18% to 100%. It has been traditionally thought that gross-total resection was required for long-term survival, and small residuals were classically resected in a subsequent operation.

Methods: The authors analyzed their pediatric low-grade glioma (PLGG) database for cases treated between 1985 and 2020 and filtered for intracranial PAs, to determine what clinical or radiological factors precipitated revisional resective surgery in their single quaternary care center cohort.

In the past, Cu-oxo or -hydroxy clusters hosted in zeolites have been suggested to enable the selective conversion of methane to methanol, but the impact of the active site's stoichiometry and structure on methanol production is still poorly understood. Herein, we apply theoretical modeling in conjunction with experiments to study the impact of these two factors on partial methane oxidation in the Cu-exchanged zeolite SSZ-13. Phase diagrams developed from first-principles suggest that Cu-hydroxy or Cu-oxo dimers are stabilized when O or NO are used to activate the catalyst, respectively.

Objective: About one-fifth of US adolescents experienced major depressive symptoms, but few studies have examined longitudinal trends of adolescents developing depression or recovering by demographic factors. We estimated new transition probability inputs, and then used them in a simulation model to project the epidemiologic burden and trajectory of depression of diverse adolescents by sex and race or ethnicity combinations.

Methods: Transition probabilities were first derived using parametric survival analysis of data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health and then calibrated to cross-sectional data from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health.

Cellular senescence and the senescence-associated secretory phenotype (SASP) contribute to age-related arterial dysfunction, in part, by promoting oxidative stress and inflammation, which reduce the bioavailability of the vasodilatory molecule nitric oxide (NO). In the present study, we assessed the efficacy of fisetin, a natural compound, as a senolytic to reduce vascular cell senescence and SASP factors and improve arterial function in old mice. We found that fisetin decreased cellular senescence in human endothelial cell culture.

Apigenin is a bioactive plant compound that inhibits cellular aging processes and could protect against age-related cognitive dysfunction, but its mechanisms of action in the brain have not been comprehensively studied. Within the biomedical paradigm, treatment effects are typically split into primary and secondary effects with temporality playing a key role in this separation. Yet, this kind of ordering of effects with some effects understood as happening on the 'side', secondary and temporary, does not fit with how they are experienced by many patients who undergo treatment for cancer. Drawing on empirical data from a research project that gathered narratives of women's experiences of radiotherapy for gynaecological cancer, we observe radiotherapeutic effects that are experienced as ambivalent and temporally diverse and as overlapping demands that the women endure and manage.
