Sudden unexpected death in epilepsy (SUDEP) is a devastating complication of epilepsy with possible sex-specific risk factors, although the exact relationship between sex and SUDEP remains unclear. To investigate this, we studied Kcna1 knockout (Kcna1) mice, which lack voltage-gated Kv1.1 channel subunits and are widely used as a SUDEP model that mirrors key features in humans.

A spinal cord injury (SCI) disrupts the neuronal projections from the brain to the region of the spinal cord that produces walking, leading to various degrees of paralysis. Here, we aimed to identify brain regions that steer the recovery of walking after incomplete SCI and that could be targeted to augment this recovery. To uncover these regions, we constructed a space-time brain-wide atlas of transcriptionally active and spinal cord-projecting neurons underlying the recovery of walking after incomplete SCI.

Introduction: The majority of metastatic renal cell carcinoma (mRCC) patients receive one or more VEGFR TKI agents, alone or in combination with an immune-oncology (IO) agent or an mTOR inhibitor. To date, the cost of adverse events (AEs) common to VEGFR TKIs has not been quantified. This study estimated the potential impact of differences in VEGFR TKI AE profiles on treatment cost efficiency in the relapsed/refractory (R/R) setting.

Pediatric intensive care unit (ICU) delirium is an increasingly common diagnosis with negative impacts on morbidity and mortality. Patients with developmental delay are particularly susceptible to developing ICU delirium due to possible cerebral disease, sensory loss, unfamiliar environment, or use of deliriogenic medications. Of the existing scoring tools to assess for ICU delirium, few have been evaluated for patients with developmental delay.

Here, we introduce the Tabulae Paralytica-a compilation of four atlases of spinal cord injury (SCI) comprising a single-nucleus transcriptome atlas of half a million cells, a multiome atlas pairing transcriptomic and epigenomic measurements within the same nuclei, and two spatial transcriptomic atlases of the injured spinal cord spanning four spatial and temporal dimensions. We integrated these atlases into a common framework to dissect the molecular logic that governs the responses to injury within the spinal cord. The Tabulae Paralytica uncovered new biological principles that dictate the consequences of SCI, including conserved and divergent neuronal responses to injury; the priming of specific neuronal subpopulations to upregulate circuit-reorganizing programs after injury; an inverse relationship between neuronal stress responses and the activation of circuit reorganization programs; the necessity of re-establishing a tripartite neuroprotective barrier between immune-privileged and extra-neural environments after SCI and a failure to form this barrier in old mice.

Objective: Diabetes knowledge is associated with health, including lower A1C levels. The Diabetes Knowledge Questionnaire (DKQ-24), developed 30 years ago for Mexican Americans with type 2 diabetes and since used with diverse samples in many countries, contains outdated items that no longer accurately assess current knowledge needed for diabetes self-management. We revised the DKQ-24 and tested psychometric properties of the DKQ-Revised (DKQ-R) with a diverse sample.

Nerve injuries cause permanent neurological disability due to limited axonal regeneration. Injury-dependent and -independent mechanisms have provided important insight into neuronal regeneration, however, common denominators underpinning regeneration remain elusive. A comparative analysis of transcriptomic datasets associated with neuronal regenerative ability revealed circadian rhythms as the most significantly enriched pathway.

Article Synopsis
  • Scientists are trying to fix spinal cord injuries so people can walk again, but it's been tricky to get it right.
  • They studied specific nerve cells in mice to see which ones help in recovery after an injury.
  • By guiding the broken nerve pathways back to where they should go, they found that mice could walk better, so it's important to connect the right nerves for healing.

People with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) experience elevated risk for poor health and social outcomes in adulthood and are at risk for experiencing homelessness and housing instability. Although the exact prevalence of IDD among homeless populations is unknown, a small body of literature related to the intersection of IDD and homelessness suggests differential health needs and service use patterns, with a need for targeted health and social services. In this study, we explore the perceptions and experiences of 18 homeless or disability service providers about (a) their clients at the intersection of IDD and homelessness and (b) their role and the services provided at the intersection of IDD and homelessness.
