On Earth, the circulation of Fe-rich fluids in hydrothermal environments leads to characteristic iron mineral deposits, reflecting the pH and redox chemical conditions of the hydrothermal system, and is often associated with chemotroph microorganisms capable of deriving energy from chemical gradients. On Mars, iron-rich hydrothermal sites are considered to be potentially important astrobiological targets for searching evidence of life during exploration missions, such as the Mars 2020 and the ExoMars 2022 missions. In this study, an extinct hydrothermal chimney from the Jaroso hydrothermal system (SE Spain), considered an interesting geodynamic and mineralogical terrestrial analog for Mars, was analyzed using Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy.

In the context of widespread public and political concern around the use of animals in research, we sought to examine the scientific, ethical and economic arguments around the replacement of animals with New Approach Methodologies (NAMs) and to situate this within a regulatory context. We also analyzed the extent to which animal replacement aligns with British public and policymakers' priorities and explored global progress towards this outcome. The global context is especially relevant given the international nature of regulatory guidance on the safety testing of new medicines.

Slow solitary positive-potential peaks sustained by trapped electron deficit in a plasma with asymmetric ion velocity distributions are in principle asymmetric, involving a potential change across the hole. It is shown theoretically how to construct such asymmetric electron holes, thus providing fully consistent solutions of the one-dimensional Vlasov-Poisson equation for a wide variety of prescribed background ion velocity distributions. Because of ion reflection forces experienced by the hole, there is generally only one discrete slow hole velocity that is in equilibrium.

The Mars 2020 and ExoMars 2022, rover-based missions are specifically dedicated to the search for evidence of life and will both utilise Raman spectrometers on the surface of Mars. Raman spectroscopy is indeed a valuable analytical technique for planetary exploration that enables characterisation of rocks and soils collected directly from the surface or retrieved as cores and subsequently crushed when extracted from the subsurface with a drill. On Mars, the miniaturised spectrometers will interrogate ancient geological deposits, in order to try and identify hydrated or aqueously altered minerals and organic matter to assess the habitability of Mars.

We present Magnetospheric Multiscale observations showing large numbers of slow electron holes with speeds clustered near the local minimum of double-humped velocity distribution functions of background ions. Theoretical computations show that slow electron holes can avoid the acceleration that otherwise prevents their remaining slow only under these same circumstances. Although the origin of the slow electron holes is still elusive, the agreement between observation and theory about the conditions for their existence is remarkable.

One-dimensional analysis is presented of solitary positive potential plasma structures whose velocity lies within the range of ion distribution velocities that are strongly populated: "slow" electron holes. It is shown that to avoid the self-acceleration of the hole velocity away from ion velocities it must lie within a local minimum in the ion velocity distribution. Quantitative criteria for the existence of stable equilibria are obtained.

Purpose: To evaluate the effect of soaking of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) grafts in vancomycin solution on graft biomechanical properties at the time of implantation.

Methods: The central third of patellar tendons was harvested from mature bovine knees and prepared as a tendon-only graft or a bone-tendon-bone (BTB) graft. Tendons were wrapped in gauze soaked in vancomycin solution (VS) (5 mg/mL) or normal saline (NS) and left to stand for 30 minutes at room temperature, simulating graft exposure times in the operating room during ACL reconstruction.
