Telescope baffle performance for Lyman Far Ultraviolet Spectrographic Explorer.

The Lyman Far Ultraviolet Spectrographic Explorer telescope is a Wolter type II glancing incidence design with an aperture of 64 cm. Because the spacecraft is required to guide on stars fainter than m(v) = 16, a visible light baffle is necessary to protect the field of view from the stray light that results from out-of-field bright sources. FITNESS CONSEQUENCES OF VARIATION IN EGG SIZE AND FOOD ABUNDANCE IN BROOK TROUT SALVELINUS FONTINALIS.

Relationships between egg size and juvenile survival in brook trout, Salvelinus fontinalis, were determined experimentally at two levels of food abundance and then incorporated into a model that related maternal fitness to egg size and food supply. Egg volume was positively correlated with juvenile size at hatching and size at yolk sac resorption but had no significant effect on embryonic survival or development time. Juvenile survival was linearly related to egg size throughout the first 50 days of exogenous feeding at high and low food levels.

Mating success of alternative maturation phenotypes in male Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar.

Mature male parr successfully fertilized eggs of anadromous female Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar, in competition with anadromous males under simulated natural conditions. Mating situations were created in which mature male parr and anadromous males competing for the opportunity to spawn with an anadromous female differed in allelic forms of the same enzyme. Females deposited eggs into a sequence of 3 or 4 eggs nests.

Protein metabolism during treatment of chest infection in patients with cystic fibrosis.

Six cystic fibrosis patients with pulmonary exacerbations were studied to determine the effect of antibiotic treatment on protein nutritional status. Indirect calorimetry, nitrogen balance, protein turnover, urinary 3-methylhistidine, plasma albumin, prealbumin transferrin, and cortisol were measured before and after treatment. N loss averaged 16 and 17% on each balance.

A Spurious Correlation in an Interpopulation Comparison of Atlantic Salmon Life Histories.

We tested two hypotheses concerning geographical variation in Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) life histories: (1) mean age at first reproduction is positively correlated with growth rate at sea and (2) within-population variation in age at first reproduction first increases and then decreases with latitude. Data on growth and age at first reproduction were compiled from 41 populations in eastern North America. Data reliability was checked by a redetermination of ages based on scale examination.

An assessment of burst strength distribution data for monitoring quality of condom stocks in developing countries.

Laboratory tests were conducted on condoms to examine the changes that occur over time in indicators of condom burst strength, and to determine the relationship between laboratory-assessed condom burst strength and breakage during use in a developing country setting. Three groups of unaged condoms purchased directly from the manufacturer were used: one group exposed to UV light for 10 hours; one group exposed for five hours; and one group unexposed. A sample of each of these groups was tested according to ISO condom air burst test protocols.

The segmental pectoralis major muscle flap: a function-preserving procedure.

A function-sparing pectoralis major muscle flap is presented. The flap is a medially based segmental transfer of a single intercostal portion of the pectoralis major muscle supplied by a single perforating branch of the internal thoracic artery. The segmental terminal nerve distribution of the medial and lateral pectoral nerves permits preservation of the remainder of the muscle in situ.

Increased incidence of breast carcinoma in patients with irradiation for post-partum mastitis: a screening situation.

In Rochester, New York, 606 women were treated with ionizing radiation for post-partum mastitis, mostly between 1940 and 1955. Two-thirds of all breasts were treated, the average dose per breast being 377 rads (at 2.5 cm breast depth).
