The neutron flux distribution within the pool of the SLOWPOKE-2 reactor at the RMC has been characterized using neutron activation measurements as well as MCNP simulations. Westcott equivalent thermal neutron flux values were calculated from measured activities of solutions of Co, Au, and Cd-shielded Au at several reactor flux settings and compared to tabulated fluxes from MCNP simulations. Good agreement was found between the simulated and experimental thermal flux values, while larger uncertainties were highlighted in higher energy neutron fluxes.

Physicians must adapt their learning and expertise to the rapid evolution of healthcare. To train for the innovation-efficient demands of adaptive expertise, medical students need to acquire the skill of adaptive self-regulated learning, which includes accessing, interpreting, and synthesizing emerging basic and translational research to support patient care. In response, we developed the course Medical Student Grand Rounds (MSGR).

To this end, recent technological advancements have provided novel means for sustained drug delivery to specific tissues and targeted localized approaches for immunotherapeutics.

The family of cytokines that comprises IL-3, IL-5, and GM-CSF was discovered over 30 years ago, and their biological activities and resulting impact in clinical medicine has continued to expand ever since. Originally identified as bone marrow growth factors capable of acting on hemopoietic progenitor cells to induce their proliferation and differentiation into mature blood cells, these cytokines are also recognized as key mediators of inflammation and the pathobiology of diverse immunologic diseases. This increased understanding of the functional repertoire of IL-3, IL-5, and GM-CSF has led to an explosion of interest in modulating their functions for clinical management.

Allergic asthma is a chronic inflammatory respiratory disease associated with eosinophilic infiltration, increased mucus production, airway hyperresponsiveness, and airway remodeling. Epidemiologic data reveal that the prevalence of allergic sensitization and associated diseases has increased in the twentieth century. This has been hypothesized to be partly due to reduced contact with microbial organisms (the hygiene hypothesis) in industrialized society.

The pool of publicly available sequence data has grown significantly over the past few decades, and over half of all known species of have been characterized using one or more molecular markers commonly employed in DNA barcoding (18S, internal transcribed spacer [ITS], 28S, ). But how reliable are these data and how useful are these four markers for differentiating species? We downloaded all 18S, ITS, 28S, and gene sequences available on the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) database, GenBank, for all species of for which data were available.

Interfacial Mechanical Behavior in Nacre of Red Abalone and Other Shells: A Review.

Interfaces between nacreous tablets are crucial to the outstanding mechanical properties of nacre in natural shells. Excellent research has been conducted to probe the effect of interfaces on strength and toughness of nacre, providing critical guidelines for the design of human-made laminated composites. This article reviews recent studies on interfacial mechanical behavior of nacre in red abalone and other shells, including experimental methods, analytical and numerical modeling.

Lithospheric conductors reveal source regions of convergent margin mineral systems.

The clean energy transition will require a vast increase in metal supply, yet new mineral deposit discoveries are declining, due in part to challenges associated with exploring under sedimentary and volcanic cover. Recently, several case studies have demonstrated links between lithospheric electrical conductors imaged using magnetotelluric (MT) data and mineral deposits, notably Iron Oxide Copper Gold (IOCG). Adoption of MT methods for exploration is therefore growing but the general applicability and relationship with many other deposit types remains untested.

We report on Neoechinorhynchus aldrichettae Edmonds, 1971 (Acanthocephala: Neoechinorhynchidae), obtained from yellow-eye mullet Aldrichetta forsteri (Valenciennes) (Mugiliformes: Mugilidae) from the Huon River, Tasmania, Australia. We provide new 18S and 28S rDNA gene sequence data for N. aldrichettae, assess its phylogenetic position relative to other species of Neoechinorhynchus and provide an updated morphological account of this species including detail of features omitted in the type-description, specifically of the apical organ, a collar at the base of the neck and a para-receptacle structure associated with the proboscis receptacle.

Emerging biomaterial-based strategies for personalized therapeutic in situ cancer vaccines.

Landmark successes in oncoimmunology have led to development of therapeutics boosting the host immune system to eradicate local and distant tumors with impactful tumor reduction in a subset of patients. However, current immunotherapy modalities often demonstrate limited success when involving immunologically cold tumors and solid tumors. Here, we describe the role of various biomaterials to formulate cancer vaccines as a form of cancer immunotherapy, seeking to utilize the host immune system to activate and expand tumor-specific T cells.

Guiding Preclinical Medical Students in Finding, Synthesizing, and Communicating Translational Basic Research Literature: Roles for Basic Science Research Mentors.

Problem: Understanding and communicating medical advances driven by basic research, and acquiring foundational skills in critically appraising and communicating translational basic research literature that affects patient care, are challenging for medical students to develop.

Approach: The authors developed a mandatory course from 2012 to 2018 at Texas A&M University College of Medicine to address this problem. Medical Student Grand Rounds (MSGR) trains first-year students to find, critically assess, and present primary research literature about self-selected medically relevant topics.

STABLE ISOTOPE SIGNATURES OF AN ACANTHOCEPHALAN AND TREMATODE FROM THE HERBIVOROUS MARINE FISH KYPHOSUS BIGIBBUS (PERCIFORMES: KYPHOSIDAE).

Stable isotope analyses of carbon and nitrogen (δ13C and δ15N) are useful for elucidating consumer relationships of free-living organisms, as carbon isotopes indicate dietary carbon sources and incremental increases in nitrogen isotopic enrichment are correlated with increases in trophic position. However, host-parasite relationships are more difficult to interpret using isotopes, as data from different host-parasite systems rarely show any consistent pattern. This inconsistency of pattern reflects the complexity of host-parasite relationships, but also the scarcity of data from a diverse assemblage of host-parasite systems.
