State of Lung Cancer in Egypt: Moving Towards Improved Guidelines for Prevention, Screening, Treatment, and Clinical Care Programs.

Lung cancer remains a leading cause of cancer-related mortality globally and presents significant challenges in Egypt. In 2023, the first annual meeting of the Thoracic Oncology Multidisciplinary Faculty, organized by the Egyptian Cancer Research Network and the Egyptian Society of Respiratory Neoplasms, was held in Cairo, Egypt. The meeting aimed to address gaps in lung cancer management across Egypt and the broader Middle East and North Africa region.

Zoledronate interrupts pre-osteoclast-induced angiogenesis via SDF-1/CXCR4 pathway.

Introduction: In this study, we tested the hypothesis that pre-osteoclast signaling is key in triggering post-traumatic angiogenesis in alveolar bone via the SDF-1/CXCR4 pathway. Interruption of osteoclast differentiation through zoledronate (Zol) disrupts the crosstalk between pre-osteoclasts and endothelial cells, hindering the initial angiogenic reaction following dental trauma. This disruption could therefore play a role in the pathogenesis of medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ).

Antibacterial and Antioxidant Activities of Triterpenoids Isolated from Endemic Stem Latex.

This research study aimed to investigate the chemical constituents and evaluate the antibacterial and antioxidant activities of stem latex extracts from the endemic medicinal plant found on Socotra Island, Yemen. The study aimed to assess the potential medicinal and veterinary uses of this plant, representing the first evaluation of its properties. The stem latex was extracted using ethanol, and the resulting oil underwent analysis using GC-MS to identify eight compounds.

A Phase 2 Randomized Open-label Study of Oral Darolutamide Monotherapy Versus Androgen Deprivation Therapy in Men with Hormone-sensitive Prostate Cancer (EORTC-GUCG 1532).

Background And Objective: Darolutamide is an androgen receptor inhibitor that increases overall survival in combination with androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) in patients with metastatic hormone-sensitive and nonmetastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (PCa). This phase 2 study assessed the efficacy and safety of darolutamide as monotherapy without ADT in patients with eugonadal testosterone levels.

Methods: This was a 24-wk, open-label, randomized study of patients with hormone-sensitive, histologically confirmed PCa requiring gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH); an Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group performance status score of 0/1; and life expectancy >1 yr.

Egyptian Society of Liver Cancer Recommendation Guidelines for the Management of Hepatocellular Carcinoma.

Globally, hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the fourth most common cause of death from cancer. The prevalence of this pathology, which has been on the rise in the last 30 years, has been predicted to continue increasing. HCC is the most common cause of cancer-related morbidity and mortality in Egypt and is also the most common cancer in males.

Flexible Antenna with Circular/Linear Polarization for Wideband Biomedical Wireless Communication.

A wideband low-profile radiating G-shaped strip on a flexible substrate is proposed to operate as biomedical antenna for off-body communication. The antenna is designed to produce circular polarization over the frequency range 5-6 GHz to communicate with WiMAX/WLAN antennas. Furthermore, it is designed to produce linear polarization over the frequency range 6-19 GHz for communication with the on-body biosensor antennas.

Bone Morphogenetic Protein-4 Impairs Retinal Endothelial Cell Barrier, a Potential Role in Diabetic Retinopathy.

Bone Morphogenetic Protein 4 (BMP4) is a secreted growth factor of the Transforming Growth Factor beta (TGFβ) superfamily. The goal of this study was to test whether BMP4 contributes to the pathogenesis of diabetic retinopathy (DR). Immunofluorescence of BMP4 and the vascular marker isolectin-B4 was conducted on retinal sections of diabetic and non-diabetic human and experimental mice.

Background: Bladder cancer (BC) is recorded as the fifth most common cancer worldwide with high morbidity and mortality. The most urgent problem in BCs is the high recurrence rate as two-thirds of non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC) will develop into muscle-invasive bladder cancer (MIBC), which retains a feature of rapid progress and metastasis. Background: Sarcoma of unknown primary (SUP) designates an enigmatic entity with histologic confirmation of a metastatic tumor without an identifiable primary after a thorough diagnostic workup. The term "unknown primary" is heavily debatable given that sarcomas can arise from any tissue that harbors its histological structure. In this review, we discuss the validity of SUP as a distinct entity.

Multigene Panel Sequencing Reveals Cancer-Specific and Common Somatic Mutations in Colorectal Cancer Patients: An Egyptian Experience.

This study aims at identifying common pathogenic somatic mutations at different stages of colorectal carcinogenesis in Egyptian patients. Our cohort included colonoscopic biopsies collected from 120 patients: 20 biopsies from patients with inflammatory bowel disease, 38 from colonic polyp patients, and 62 from patients with colorectal cancer. On top of this, the cohort included 20 biopsies from patients with non-specific mild to moderated colitis.

Use of Health Information Exchange in the Continuity of Care as Viewed by Patients and Nurses: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Nurses contribute significantly to information sharing within the care continuum in hospitals and community. Effects of Zinc Oxide Nanoparticles on the Performance of Broiler Chickens Under Hot Climatic Conditions.

This study aimed to investigate the effects of different levels of zinc oxide nanoparticles on broilers' performance, nutrient digestibility, carcass criteria, and blood biochemistry. A total of 120 1-day-old unsexed broiler chickens (Ross 308) were fed zinc oxide nanoparticles at different levels (0, 20, 40, or 60 mg/kg) in their diets. Each treatment included 6 replicate pens with 5 birds each.

Lumpy skin disease outbreaks in Egypt during 2017-2018 among sheeppox vaccinated cattle: Epidemiological, pathological, and molecular findings.

The General Organization of the Veterinary Services in Egypt has adopted a sheeppox vaccination policy to control lumpy skin disease (LSD) in cattle. Over the course of the last two years, recurrent outbreaks were reported, with animals showing severe clinical signs and consequentially higher fatalities than that of cases reported in previous LSD outbreaks. A total of 1050 cattle showing typical clinical signs suggestive of LSD were clinically and pathologically investigated during 2017-2018.

Prognostic Values of MicroRNA-21 and Ki-67 in Diffuse Large B-Cell Lymphoma Patients: Egyptian Experience.

Background: MicroRNA-21 (miR-21) is a small non-coding RNA which influences tumorigenesis by inhibiting the expression of target genes. Ki-67 is a nucleolar antigen highly correlated with the rate of proliferating cells. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the prognostic impact of miR-21 and Ki-67 in DLBCL disease in a cohort of Egyptian patients.

Medical Oncology Education in Egypt Over the Past 50 Years: the Experience of the National Cancer Institute of Cairo University.

This manuscript outlines the progress of education in the field of medical oncology in Egypt over the past 50 years. The manuscript illustrates the origin of the Egyptian medical oncology program since the creation of the only specialized cancer center in the country, the National Cancer Institute of Cairo University (NCI-Cairo) in 1969, from Cairo University Medical School. The manuscript also outlines the NCI-Cairo's educational program for developing a cadre of academic medical oncologists for NCI-Cairo, other Egyptian medical institutions, and countries in the Middle East and Africa.

Bone Morphogenetic Protein-2 Induces Non-Canonical Inflammatory and Oxidative Pathways in Human Retinal Endothelial Cells.

The mechanisms of diabetic retinopathy (DR), are not yet fully understood. We previously demonstrated an upregulation of retinal bone morphogenetic protein-2 (BMP2) in experimental diabetes and in retinas of diabetic human subjects. The purpose of current study was to investigate the role of non-canonical inflammatory pathway in BMP2-induced retinal endothelial cell (REC) barrier dysfunction.

The management of patients with cancer of unknown primary in middle-income countries: an ESO-AROME survey.

To report on the management strategies in patients with cancer of unknown primary (CUP) in middle-income countries. We conceived a survey of 20 items concerning the management of patients with CUP in daily clinical practice. Only participants from lower- and higher-middle-income countries, as per the World Bank Classification, were eligible for this study.

Brucellosis is a common zoonotic infection, particularly in the developing world. The recommended treatment regimens for brucellosis involve the use of two medications such as doxycycline and curcumin in order to avoid relapses and prolonged use of these drugs. The role of circulating tumor cells and K-ras mutations in patients with locally advanced rectal cancer: a prospective study.
