On dairy farms, milking practices can temporarily restrict cows from accessing drinking water. This study examined how different types of temporary water restriction, similar to those commonly encountered on farms, may affect the individual behavior and physiological dehydration status of cows and whether these effects could differ according to the cow's position in the social hierarchy of the group. Four treatments were applied (CTRL = free access to the drinker and feed fence, HL = 2 h of headlock at the feed fence after morning and evening milking, D2H = free access to the feed fence and no access to water for 2 h after milking and D4H = free access to the feed fence and no access to water for 4 h after milking) to 4 groups of 10 lactating dairy cows using a 4 × 4 Latin square design.

Diamond-Blackfan anemia (DBA) is caused by aberrant ribosomal biogenesis due to ribosomal protein (RP) gene mutations. To develop mechanistic understanding of DBA pathogenesis, we studied CD34⁺ cells from peripheral blood of DBA patients carrying RPL11 and RPS19 ribosomal gene mutations and determined their ability to undergo erythroid differentiation in vitro. RPS19 mutations induced a decrease in proliferation of progenitor cells, but the terminal erythroid differentiation was normal with little or no apoptosis.

Diets inducing milk fat depression (MFD) are known to alter ruminal lipid metabolism, leading to the formation of specific isomers [such as trans-10,cis-12 conjugated linoleic acid (CLA)] that inhibit milk fat synthesis in lactating dairy cows. However, ruminal outflow of these isomers does not fully account for the decreases in milk fat synthesis observed during diet-induced MFD. The high-concentrate diets inducing MFD also induce a greater production of propionate, suggesting a possible inhibition of milk fat by propionate associated with trans-10,cis-12-CLA during MFD.

The understanding of mitochondrial functioning is of prime importance since it combines the production of energy as adenosine triphosphate (ATP) with an efficient chain of redox reactions, but also with the unavoidable production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) involved in aging. Mitochondrial respiration may be uncoupled from ATP synthesis by a proton leak induced by the thermogenic uncoupling protein 1 (UCP1). Mild uncoupling activity, as proposed for UCP2, UCP3, and avian UCP could theoretically control ROS production, but the nature of their transport activities is far from being definitively understood.
