We derive a phase retrieval formula for propagation-based phase contrast X-ray imaging that does not require weakly attenuating objects or short propagation distances. It is directly applicable to both single- and multiple-distance scenarios. We show the validity conditions and study the error of the underlying mutual intensity approximation, which uses the common assumptions of weak phase shift variations and phase-attenuation duality.

Despite proportional information being ubiquitous, there is not a standard account of proportional reasoning. Part of the difficulty is that there are several apparent contradictions: in some contexts, proportion is easy and privileged, while in others it is difficult and ignored. One possibility is that although we see similarities across tasks requiring proportional reasoning, people approach them with different strategies.

Background: Bacterial genomes often encode structures similar to phage capsids (encapsulins) and phage tails which can be induced spontaneously or using genotoxic compounds such as mitomycin C. These high molecular-weight (HMW) putative antibacterial proteins (ABPs) are used against the competitive strains under natural environment. Previously, it was unknown whether these HMW putative ABPs originating from the insect pathogenic Gram-positive, spore-forming bacterium Brevibacillus laterosporus (Bl) isolates (1821L, 1951) are spontaneously induced during the growth and pose a detrimental effect on their own survival.

Objective: To compare how different imputation methods affect the estimates and performance of a prediction model for premature mortality.

Study Design And Setting: Sex-specific Weibull accelerated failure time survival models were run on four separate datasets using complete case, mode, single and multiple imputation to impute missing values. Six performance measures were compared to access predictive accuracy (Nagelkerke R, integrated brier score), discrimination (Harrell's c-index, discrimination slope) and calibration (calibration in the large, calibration slope).

Article Synopsis
  • Bacterial ABC toxin complexes consist of three main proteins: TcA, TcB, and TcC, which work together to deliver a toxic "cargo" to target cells; TcA binds and penetrates the cell membrane, while TcB and TcC form a shell around the cargo.
  • A new TcC protein structure from Yersinia entomophaga was identified, revealing that inside the TcB-TcC shell, the toxin adopts a disordered state but has areas of local order thanks to the shell's surface.
  • When outside the shell, the toxin has a structure similar to the SpvB toxin from Salmonella, suggesting it modifies actin to inhibit its normal function in cell processes.

Introduction: Avoidable hospitalizations are considered preventable given effective and timely primary care management and are an important indicator of health system performance. The ability to predict avoidable hospitalizations at the population level represents a significant advantage for health system decision-makers that could facilitate proactive intervention for ambulatory care-sensitive conditions (ACSCs). The aim of this study is to develop and validate the Avoidable Hospitalization Population Risk Tool (AvHPoRT) that will predict the 5-year risk of first avoidable hospitalization for seven ACSCs using self-reported, routinely collected population health survey data.

Tc toxins are virulence factors of bacterial pathogens. Although their structure and intoxication mechanism are well understood, it remains elusive where this large macromolecular complex is assembled and how it is released. Here we show by an integrative multiscale imaging approach that Yersinia entomophaga Tc (YenTc) toxin components are expressed only in a subpopulation of cells that are 'primed' with several other potential virulence factors, including filaments of the protease M66/StcE.

Background: Community belonging, an important constituent of subjective well-being, is an important target for improving population health. Ageing involves transitioning across different social conditions thus, community belonging on health may vary across the life course. Using a nationally representative cohort, this study estimates the life stage-specific impact of community belonging on premature mortality.

Background: Conducting effective and translational research can be challenging and few trials undertake formal reflection exercises and disseminate learnings from them. Following completion of our multicentre randomised controlled trial, which was impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, we sought to reflect on our experiences and share our thoughts on challenges, lessons learned, and recommendations for researchers undertaking or considering research in primary care.

Methods: Researchers involved in the Prediction of Undiagnosed atriaL fibrillation using a machinE learning AlgorIthm (PULsE-AI) trial, conducted in England from June 2019 to February 2021 were invited to participate in a qualitative reflection exercise.

Article Synopsis
  • Charcot neuroarthropathy (CN) has a classification system that includes six types based on location, with recent studies suggesting higher prevalence rates for certain types, especially ankle CN.
  • A review of radiographs from 175 patients showed the majority classified as type 1 (midfoot) and type 4 (multiarticular), with a notable occurrence of isolated ankle CN being higher than previously reported.
  • The findings indicate that ankle CN is more common than previously thought, particularly in cases involving multiple joints, with the study reporting a prevalence of 21.5% for ankle CN, significantly above the earlier estimates.

Isolation by environment (IBE) is a population genomic pattern that arises when ecological barriers reduce gene flow between populations. Although current evidence suggests IBE is common in nature, few studies have evaluated the underlying mechanisms that generate IBE patterns. In this study, we evaluate five proposed mechanisms of IBE (natural selection against immigrants, sexual selection against immigrants, selection against hybrids, biased dispersal, and environment-based phenological differences) that may give rise to host-associated differentiation within a sympatric population of the redheaded pine sawfly, Neodiprion lecontei, a species for which IBE has previously been detected.
