A series of 2,1,3-benzothiadiazole-Au(I)-L complexes have been synthesised, structurally characterised and investigated for their photophysical properties. These are the first organometallic Au(I) complexes containing a C-Au bond on the highly electron-deficient benzothiadiazole unit. The complexes exhibit solution-phase phosphorescence at room temperature, assigned to the intrinsic triplet state of the benzothiadiazole unit that is efficently populated through its attachment to gold.

Background: Pregnant women with SARS-CoV-2 infection experience higher rates of stillbirth and preterm birth. A unique pattern of chronic histiocytic intervillositis (CHI) and/or massive perivillous fibrin deposition (MPFD) has emerged, coined as SARS-CoV-2 placentitis.

Methods: The aim of this study was to describe a cohort of placentas diagnosed with SARS-CoV-2 placentitis during October 2020-March 2021.

Background: Aplasia cutis congenita (ACC) is a heterogeneous condition that can be associated with fetus papyraceus. Few reports exist documenting genetic investigations in ACC or determining the etiology and recurrence risks.

Objective: We present a Frieden group 5 ACC with fetus papyraceus along with molecular studies.

This report presents a girl with a lipoblastoma of a finger presenting as a macrodactyly. Documented inflammation of the digit at birth raises suspicion of neo-adipogenesis, which is recognised in lipomas. This case highlights a rare site for lipoblastomas and explores a potential aetiopathogenesis.

Aim: To review physico-chemical data supplied for commercially available detergents marketed for manual and/or ultrasonic cleansing of reusable dental instruments.

Method: Manufacturers/suppliers of commercially available detergents for manual or ultrasonic cleaning of dental instruments within primary dental care were invited to supply product information. A structured questionnaire requested details on a range of physical and chemical properties for each detergent.

Recent guidelines advise that the decontamination of dental instruments should be undertaken outwith the treatment area. The aim of this study was to determine the physical area of rooms in dental surgeries that decontaminate instruments within and outwith the treatment area respectively, and other factors relating to practice layout and ventilation. Data were collected by interview and observation of dental healthcare workers in dental practice in Scotland, UK.

Metastatic tumors within the cervix are uncommon if one excludes endometrial carcinoma, which involves the cervix by direct spread. A variety of other neoplasms rarely metastasize to the cervix and, in most cases, the diagnosis is straightforward because of a combination of clinical and pathologic parameters, common features of metastatic carcinoma within the cervix including predominant involvement of the deep stroma, absence of surface involvement and of an in situ component, and prominent lymphovascular permeation. We describe 6 cases of metastatic adenocarcinoma involving the cervix with superficial "mucosal" involvement mimicking primary cervical adenocarcinoma or adenocarcinoma in situ.

We describe an observational study in which the policies and procedures of dental surgeries in 14 of the 15 Scottish prisons for sterilizing instruments were viewed directly by a trained surveyor. The survey found that several key elements in the decontamination cycle, ranging from procurement of devices, cleaning, sterilizing, testing, maintenance, quality management and training were deficient in a number of aspects. The use of a central sterile supply service may be a more cost effective approach for the provision of compliant instrument reprocessing facilities in the sites surveyed.

Objective: Describe the formulation of learning outcomes and evaluate a new course for undergraduate dental students in managing a local decontamination unit (LDU). DESIGN, SAMPLE AND SETTING: This was a retrospective analysis of questionnaire data from the first cohort of dental students completing the LDU managers course in a UK dental school.

Methods: All final year dental students were invited to complete a course evaluation.

We report a case in which a vaginal adenocarcinoma was discovered in a 67-year-old woman 16 years after hysterectomy for cervical adenocarcinoma in situ. Both the vaginal and cervical lesions exhibited morphologic and immunohistochemical (CDX2-positive) features of intestinal differentiation. Linear array human papillomavirus genotyping demonstrated the vaginal adenocarcinoma to contain human papillomavirus 45.

This was an observational study in which the management policies and procedures associated with infection control and instrument decontamination were examined in 179 dental surgeries by a team of trained surveyors. Information relating to the management of a wide range of infection control procedures, in particular the decontamination of dental instruments, was collected by interview and by examination of practice documentation. This study found that although the majority of surgeries (70%) claimed to have a management policy on infection control, only 50% of these were documented.

Objective: To examine the methods used for sterilisation of re-usable instruments in general dental practice, including the installation, commissioning and testing of benchtop steam sterilisers.

Materials And Methods: This was an observational study in which the policies and procedures for sterilising instruments were viewed directly by trained surveyors at practice premises. Information relating to the installation, commissioning and testing of benchtop steam sterilisers was also collected by interview and observation of records.

Objective: This paper describes an objective method for assessing the decontamination procedures used for reprocessing dental instruments in primary dental care facilities.

Materials And Methods: The study population comprised all general dental practitioners in Scotland with an NHS list number. A two-stage process was used to identify which surgeries were to be surveyed, using a proportional stratified random sampling method.

Aims: To describe the clinicopathological and immunohistochemical findings in four cases of uterine tumour resembling ovarian sex cord tumour (UTROSCT).

Methods: Four UTROSCTs were stained with a wide range of antibodies, including epithelial (AE1/3, epithelial membrane antigen), myoid (desmin, alpha smooth muscle actin, h-caldesmon), sex cord (alpha inhibin, calretinin, melan A, CD99) and neuroendocrine (chromogranin, CD56) markers as well as hormone receptors (oestrogen receptor, progesterone receptor, androgen receptor), vimentin, CD10, WT1 and HMB45.

Results: The tumours ranged from 0.

Article Synopsis
  • MPEG2 is a compression standard for echocardiographic data, and this study evaluates its effectiveness compared to super VHS videotape.
  • Four experienced echocardiographers reviewed MPEG2 and super VHS images to assess factors like heart chamber size and function in a blinded manner.
  • The study found a high concordance rate of 93.6% between the two methods, indicating that MPEG2 is reliable for echocardiographic imaging.

Left ventricular (LV) wall thickening is the most consistent clinical marker of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HC), and characteristically increases substantially during adolescence. In this study, we used 2-dimensional echocardiography to develop a cross-sectional profile of LV wall thicknesses in adult patients with HC. We studied a regional community-based cohort of 239 consecutively enrolled patients (aged 18 to 91 years).
