In this study, we investigated the preparation of living bacteria-nanoparticle hybrids mediated by surface-displayed peptides. The assembly of metallic nanoparticles on living bacteria has been achieved under mild conditions utilizing metal-peptide interactions, whereas the viability of the bacterial cells was greatly preserved. Escherichia coli was engineered with inducible gene circuits to control the display of peptides with desired sequences.

Background: Chronic peripheral joint pain due to osteoarthritis (OA) is extremely prevalent and a major cause of physical dysfunction and psychosocial distress. Exercise is recommended to reduce joint pain and improve physical function, but the effect of exercise on psychosocial function (health beliefs, depression, anxiety and quality of life) in this population is unknown.
Objectives: To improve our understanding of the complex inter-relationship between pain, psychosocial effects, physical function and exercise.
Background: Candida is an important cause of infections in premature infants. Gastrointestinal colonization with Candida is a common site of entry for disseminated disease. Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a multifactorial progressive neurodegenerative disease. This work 1) evaluated the sensitivity of the recommended screening tools against the 'gold standard' clinical psychological assessment and 2) investigated referral and treatment pathways.
Methods: Ninety-six participants (79 caregivers; 17 adolescents with CF) completed the screening tools prior to formal assessment.
Mice overexpressing high molecular weight FGF2 isoforms (HMWTg) in osteoblast lineage phenocopy human X-linked hypophosphatemic rickets (XLH) and a Hyp murine model of XLH demonstrating increased FGF23/FGF receptor signaling and hypophosphatemic rickets/osteomalacia. Because HMWFGF2 was upregulated in bones of Hyp mice and abnormal FGF23 signaling is important in XLH, HMWTg mice were used to examine the effect of the FGF23 neutralizing antibody (FGF23Ab). Nail clipping specimens are commonly submitted for the microscopic evaluation of nail disease; however, there may be missing clinical history regarding nail polish or other adornments present on the nail at the time of specimen retrieval. For this study, 6 types of nail cosmetics were chosen and applied to the nail plate of a volunteer. After a period of at least 24 hours, the nail plates with adornments and a control nail plate were clipped and placed in formalin.

Objectives: To test the hypothesis that antistaphylococcal antibiotic prophylaxis is associated with a decreased risk of Staphylococcus aureus acquisition but no increased risk of Pseudomonas aeruginosa acquisition.
A drug delivery coating for synthetic bone grafts has been developed to provide sequential delivery of multiple osteoinductive factors to better mimic aspects of the natural regenerative process. The coating is composed of a biomimetic calcium phosphate (bCaP) layer that is applied to a synthetic bone graft and then covered with a poly-l-Lysine/poly-l-Glutamic acid polyelectrolyte multilayer (PEM) film. Bone morphogenetic protein-2 (BMP-2) was applied before the coating process directly on the synthetic bone graft and then, bCaP-PEM was deposited followed by adsorption of fibroblast growth factor-2 (FGF-2) into the PEM layer.

Objective And Study Design: This qualitative interview study explored participants' experience of EXTRA to inform development and implementation of EXTRA into practice.
Participants: Adults with Rheumatoid Arthritis who completed EXTRA were purposively sampled to include a range of ages, upper extremity disabilities, self-efficacy for arthritis self-management and attendance at EXTRA sessions.
