Dissolved organic carbon (DOC) released by macroalgae is an intrinsic component of the coastal ocean carbon cycle, yet knowledge of how future ocean warming may influence this is limited. Temperature is one of the primary abiotic regulators of macroalgal physiology, but there is minimal understanding of how it influences the magnitude and mechanisms of DOC release. To investigate this, we examined the effect of a range of temperatures on DOC release rates and physiological traits of Ecklonia radiata, the most abundant and widespread kelp in Australia that represents a potentially significant contribution to coastal ocean carbon cycling.

mRNA display is a powerful technology to screen libraries of >10 cyclic peptides against a protein target, enabling the rapid discovery of high affinity ligands. These cyclic peptides are particularly well suited to challenging protein targets that have been difficult to drug with small molecules. Seaweeds are important components of coastal benthic ecosystems along the Western Antarctic Peninsula (WAP), providing refuge, food, and habitat for numerous associated species. Despite their crucial role, the WAP is among the regions most affected by global climate change, potentially impacting the ecology and physiology of seaweeds. Single nucelotide polymorphisms (SNPs) at the locus are among the most commonly reported risk alleles associated with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and other respiratory diseases; however, the physiological role of FAM13A is unclear. In humans, two major protein isoforms are expressed at the locus: "long" and "short," but their functions remain unknown, partly because of a lack of isoform conservation in mice. We performed in-depth characterization of organotypic primary human airway epithelial cell subsets and show that multiciliated cells predominantly express the FAM13A long isoform containing a putative N-terminal Rho GTPase-activating protein (RhoGAP) domain.

The combined photoinhibitory and PSII-reaction centre quenching against light stress is an important mechanism that allows the green macroalga Ulva rigida to proliferate and form green tides in coastal ecosystems. Eutrophication of coastal ecosystems often stimulates massive and uncontrolled growth of green macroalgae, causing serious ecological problems. Kelp forests provide vital ecosystem services such as carbon storage and cycling, and understanding primary production dynamics regarding seasonal and spatial variations is essential. We conducted surveys at three sites in southeast Tasmania, Australia, that had different levels of water motion, across four seasons to determine seasonal primary production and carbon storage as living biomass for kelp beds of Lessonia corrugata (Order Laminariales). We quantified blade growth, erosion rates, and the variation in population density and estimated both the net biomass accumulation (NBA) per square meter and the carbon standing stock.

To limit global warming below 2°C by 2100, we must drastically reduce greenhouse gas emissions and additionally remove ~100-900 Gt CO from the atmosphere (carbon dioxide removal, CDR) to compensate for unavoidable emissions. Seaweeds (marine macroalgae) naturally grow in coastal regions worldwide where they are crucial for primary production and carbon cycling. Algal carbon-to-nitrogen (C:N) and carbon-to-phosphorus (C:P) ratios are fundamental for understanding many oceanic biogeochemical processes, such as nutrient flux and climate regulation. We synthesized literature data (444 species, >400 locations) and collected original samples from Tasmania, Australia (51 species, 10 locations) to update the global ratios of seaweed carbon-to-nitrogen (C:N) and carbon-to-phosphorus (C:P). The updated global mean molar ratio for seaweed C:N is 20 (ranging from 6 to 123) and for C:P is 801 (ranging from 76 to 4102).

The supply of dissolved inorganic carbon to seaweeds is a key factor regulating photosynthesis. Thinner diffusive boundary layers at the seaweed surface or greater seawater carbon dioxide (CO) concentrations increase CO supply to the seaweed surface. Our scientific understanding of climate change makes clear the necessity for both emission reduction and carbon dioxide removal (CDR).
