Article Synopsis
  • * The study explored the effectiveness of genetic testing, specifically looking at copy number variations (CNVs) in Vietnamese children with ASD, finding a diagnostic success rate of around 6%.
  • * Researchers identified 1708 CNVs in total, with 118 being de novo, and highlighted a significant occurrence of deletions in the SHANK3 gene among patients, establishing a basis for developing a CNV-based diagnostic test for ASD in Vietnam.

Five coumarins were isolated from the heartwood of , which included two newly discovered compounds, namely 11-hydroxypopulene E () and mansorin D (), along with three previously identified compounds. The structures were determined through the utilisation of comprehensive spectroscopic data, ECD calculations, and a thorough comparison with existing literature data. The -glucosidase inhibitory activities of all isolated compounds were assessed in yeast.

Nine undescribed sesquiterpenoids, along with ten known compounds, were isolated from the ethyl acetate extract of Mansonia gagei heartwood. Their structures were determined by spectroscopic data analysis (FTIR, 1D, 2D NMR, and HRESIMS), and their absolute configurations were established by ECD calculation. The isolated compounds were evaluated for their inhibitory effect against α-glucosidase from yeast.

Background: Microbiological quality is one of the key safety standards in human milk bank (HMB) operations. We describe the profiles of bacteria in donor human milk (DHM) before and after the pasteurization of samples collected from breastfeeding women in the hospital and from the community in the first HMB in Vietnam. Methods: Data were collected between February 2017 and January 2022 from an online HMB monitoring system.

Objective: Describe the use of e-cigarettes and factors associated with e-cigarette use among university students from one university in Vietnam in 2021.

Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted with a total of 554 full-time undergraduate students recruiting for the study. Data was collected using a structured self-administered questionnaire.

Six undescribed prenylated chalcones gagones A-F were isolated from the acetone fraction of Mansonia gagei heartwood. Their structures were unambiguously established based on spectroscopic analysis (HRESIMS, 1D and 2D NMR), as well as comparison to literature data. Their absolute configurations were elucidated using DP4 and electronic circular dichroism calculations.

One new neolignan () and one new phenolic compound (), together with four known compounds (- were isolated from the heartwood of . Their structures were elucidated by extensive spectroscopic analyses, including 1D and 2D NMR and HRESIMS. The absolute configuration of was established based on the DP4+ protocol and by comparison of experimental and calculated ECD spectra.

Water pollution within and nearby different livestock farm types was assessed comprehensively for the first time in Vietnam. The samples of wastewater, ground water, and surface water were collected from 130 pig farms, 80 poultry farms, and 40 cow farms. Water quality was first assessed by individual parameter evaluation method in which measured values of water quality parameters were compared with the permissible limits in the national technical regulations on livestock's effluent (QCVN 62), surface water quality, and ground water quality.

Background: Since 1979, the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) have recommended the use of pasteurized human milk from a human milk bank (HMB) to feed low birthweight (LBW) and preterm newborns as the 'first alternative' when mothers are unable to provide their own milk. However, they have not issued any guidelines for the safe establishment and operation of an HMB. This gap contributes to the demand for gathering experiences from HMB networks, especially those from lower-middle income countries.

The spread of drug-resistant bacteria via food has contributed to the dissemination of resistant bacteria among humans. However, the status of food contamination with resistant bacteria, particularly the quantitative level of resistant bacteria in food, has not yet been well elucidated. In this study, the abundance of colistin-resistant in meat samples was quantified to understand the origin of the contamination of meat available in local Vietnamese markets.

Article Synopsis
  • - Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) affects about 1% of the global population, but research is limited in the Vietnamese community; this study explores its genetic factors through whole exome sequencing of 100 affected children and their parents.
  • - The study identified 18 unique genetic variants linked to ASD, including both newly discovered variants and previously recognized risk genes, especially noting a high prevalence of X-linked variants found only in affected males.
  • - This research enhances understanding of the genetic diversity of ASD and highlights specific genes potentially associated with the disorder, marking the first detailed examination of the genetic landscape of ASD in Vietnamese children.

and minute intestinal flukes (MIF) such as are fish-borne trematodes (FBT) that may coexist in regions where local people have a habit of eating raw fish like Vietnam. Responses to FBT should be verified according to the data on the distribution of these flukes. This study aims to explore the prevalence of different species of FBT and related factors among local people in a northern province of Vietnam.

Article Synopsis
  • Large-scale genome projects have led to the creation of valuable genetic databases, but Vietnam's genetic studies have mostly relied on data from other populations.
  • To address this gap, researchers sequenced and compiled a database of 406 Kinh Vietnamese individuals, identifying nearly 25 million genetic variants.
  • This KHV database could enhance genetic research and medical applications for the Vietnamese population and related groups, as it includes many previously unrecognized genetic mutations.
