Background: Long-acting injectable antiretrovirals (LAI-ARVs) for HIV prevention and treatment have been demonstrated in clinical trials to be non-inferior to daily oral medications, providing an additional option to help users overcome the challenges of daily adherence. Approval and implementation of these regimens in low- and middle-income settings have been limited.

Method: This study describes the anticipated barriers and facilitators to implementing LAI-ARVs in Vietnam to inform future roll-out.

  • HIV drug resistance (HIVDR) can decrease the effectiveness of antiretroviral drugs, and this study focused on assessing HIV-1 subtypes and drug resistance among key populations in Vietnam during 2018 and 2020.
  • The study recruited participants from hotspots for men who have sex with men (MSM) and female sex workers (FSW) in various provinces, and 42.5% of HIV-positive samples had a viral load indicating the need for further testing for drug resistance.
  • The results showed that CRF01_AE was the most common subtype, and 16.7% of participants had drug resistance mutations, with the majority being associated with NNRTI and NRTI classes, suggesting

Article Synopsis
  • Key populations (KPs) in Vietnam face challenges accessing HIV services, prompting a study to evaluate the reach and effectiveness of a web-based HIV self-testing (HIVST) intervention.
  • A mixed-methods approach was used, analyzing data from pilot and scale-up phases to measure participant demographics, test ordering, reporting of results, and usage of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP).
  • The intervention reached 17,589 participants, mainly young males; however, reported test results decreased during the scale-up phase, though the proportion of females participating increased significantly.

Article Synopsis
  • The study explores how dietary glycemic index (GI) and glycemic load (GL) influence changes in glycemic control and cardio-metabolic health over 28 months in 110 Vietnamese diabetic patients.
  • Findings revealed three different HbA1c patterns, with 51% of participants maintaining good glycemic control during the study.
  • An increase in dietary GL was linked to higher HbA1c levels, particularly in patients with poor glycemic control, while GI impacted fasting plasma glucose and triglyceride-glucose index, showing no significant effects in those with good control.

Background: Evidence-based interventions (EBIs) often address normative behaviors. If a behavior is also common among clinicians, they may be skeptical about the necessity or effectiveness of an EBI. Alternatively, clinicians' attitudes and behaviors may be misaligned, or they may lack the knowledge and self-efficacy to deliver the EBI.

Article Synopsis
  • Prostate cancer and non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) are hard to treat, with existing therapies targeting specific markers but limited options for some types, like small-cell neuroendocrine carcinoma.
  • This study examined the natural compound vitekwangin B, which showed promise in reducing cancer cell viability and inducing cell death in prostate cancer and NSCLC cells without harming healthy liver cells.
  • Vitekwangin B works by lowering the levels of the ANO1 protein, making it a potential new approach for cancer treatment and could help improve outcomes for patients facing drug resistance in these cancers.

Dengue is expanding globally, but how dengue emergence is shaped locally by interactions between climatic and socio-environmental factors is not well understood. Here, we investigate the drivers of dengue incidence and emergence in Vietnam, through analysing 23 years of district-level case data spanning a period of significant socioeconomic change (1998-2020). We show that urban infrastructure factors (sanitation, water supply, long-term urban growth) predict local spatial patterns of dengue incidence, while human mobility is a more influential driver in subtropical northern regions than the endemic south.

Introduction: Dengue is a major public health challenge and a growing problem due to climate change. The release of Aedes aegypti mosquitoes infected with the intracellular bacterium Wolbachia is a novel form of vector control against dengue. However, there remains a need to evaluate the benefits of such an intervention at a large scale.
