In earlier studies we used molecular methods to identify the major bacterial consortia associated with advanced dentin caries. These consortia are dominated by bacteria from the families Lactobacillaceae, Streptococcaceae, Veillonellaceae (formerly Acidaminococcaceae), Eubacteriaceae, and Lachnospiraceae from the phylum Firmicutes; Coriobacteriaceae, Bifidobacteriaceae, and Propionibacteriaceae from the phylum Actinobacteria; and Prevotellaceae from the phylum Bacteroidetes, as well as fusobacteria. The phases of infection of vital pulp tissue by dentin microorganisms remain obscure.

Physical monitoring of JM formation in budding yeast has provided a wealth of information about the timing and mechanism of meiotic recombination. These assays are especially informative when applied to the analysis of mutants for which genetic analysis of recombination is impossible, i.

After adjusting for temperature and outdoor radon, geological unit, house type, double glazing and date of building were found to have a statistically significant influence on indoor radon concentrations and explained about 29 % of the total variation between dwellings in logarithmically transformed radon values. In addition, there were statistically significant differences in radon concentrations according to proximity to geological boundaries categories for most of the geological units, but no consistent pattern could be detected.

Further investigations have also shown that the pathological phenotype of sheep BSE and human vCJD is maintained after blood transfusion. The present study describes the pathological phenotype, in terms of accumulation of the disease-associated prion protein in brain and lymphoreticular tissues, in sheep receiving blood from donors infected with natural scrapie.

The anaerobic gram-negative bacterium Porphyromonas gingivalis is implicated in the disease. This organism requires the uptake of porphyrins most apparently as haem 1 from local haemorrhage and it has a HA2 receptor on the outer membrane for this purpose that provides the opportunity to achieve selective anti-microbial activity.

Traditional, as well as more elaborate, methods of quantifying bacterial numbers, including colony counting and estimation of DNA content using 4',6-diamino-2-phenylindole were compared in order to validate the real-time PCR approach. Evidence was obtained that P.

The molecular systems used in this study were corannulene (C(20)H(10)), dicyclopenta[def, jkl]triphenylene (C(20)H(10)), 5,8-dioxo-5,8-dihydroindeno[2,1-c]fluorene (C(20)H(10)O(2)), 6-hexyl-5,8-dioxo-5,8-dihydroindeno[2,1-c]fluorene (C(26)H(22)O(2)), coronene (C(24)H(12)), dilithium phthalocyanine (Li(2)Pc, C(32)H(16)Li(2)N(8)), tetrabutylammonium lithium phthalocyanine (TBA-LiPc, C(48)H(52)LiN(9)), and tetramethylammonium lithium phthalocyanine (TMA-LiPc, C(36)H(28)LiN(9)). It was found (a) that the calculated term that corrects 0 K electronic energies to give Gibbs energies (thermal correction to Gibbs energy, TCGE) serves as a good approximation of the adsorbent binding energy required in order for a physisorption process to be thermodynamically allowed and (b) that the binding energy for neutral aromatic molecules varies as a function of curvature (e.

However, there is some uncertainty regarding the radiation effectiveness of various low-linear energy transfer (low-LET) radiations (x-rays, gamma radiation and electrons). In this paper we review information on the effectiveness of low-LET radiations on the basis of epidemiological and in vitro radiobiological studies.

Three breeds of sheep carrying a variety of different genotypes associated with scrapie susceptibility/resistance were imported in 1998 and 2001 from New Zealand, a country regarded as free from scrapie. They are kept in a purpose-built Sheep Unit under strict disease security and are monitored clinically and post mortem for evidence of scrapie.

In addition, the blood-brain barrier may be a further impediment to TSE neuroinvasion. The intracerebral (I/C) route is generally considered the most efficient for TSE transmission, as it may help to bypass those factors.

It was previously reported that PorT is located on the periplasmic surface of the inner membrane to function as a chaperone for the maturing proteinases. Our modelling suggested it to be an integral outer-membrane protein with eight anti-parallel, membrane-traversing beta-strands.

We demonstrated that CD24 is selectively and strongly expressed in the cells of the epithelial attachment to the tooth and the epithelial lining of the diseased periodontal pocket and studies in vitro showed that CD24 regulated expression of the epithelial intercellular adhesion protein E-cadherin.
Results: In the present study, the barrier function of oral epithelial cell monolayers to low molecular weight dextran was assayed as a model for the normal physiological function of the epithelial attachment to limit ingress of microbial products from oral microbial biofilms.
The PrP gene encodes the cellular isoform of the prion protein (PrP(c)) which has been shown to be crucial to the development of transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSEs). PrP knock-out mice, which do not express endogenous PrP(c), exhibit resistance to TSE disease. The regulation of PrP gene expression represents, therefore, a crucial factor in the development of TSEs.

Within this study, we attempt to rectify this deficit by describing the epidemiological characteristics of 30 sheep flocks naturally-infected with classical scrapie, and by exploring possible underlying causes of variation in the characteristics between flocks, including flock-level prion protein (PrP) genotype profile. In total, the study involved PrP genotype data for nearly 8600 animals and over 400 scrapie cases.

The central role for PrP in the pathogenesis of the transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSEs) is illustrated by the resistance of Prnp(0/0) mice to disease and by the inverse association of Prnp gene dosage with incubation period. Understanding the role of PrP(C) in TSEs necessitates knowledge of expression levels of the Prnp gene during the development of disease. SSBP/1 scrapie shows a defined pattern of disease progression and here we show that Prnp and shadow of PrP (Sprn) are differentially expressed in different brain areas and lymphoid tissues.

In all cases, segregation appears to be impeded by unresolved JMs.

The final results of this experiment, reported here, give unexpectedly high transmission rates by transfusion of 36% for BSE and 43% for scrapie.
