The H-bonding properties of compounds that contain multiple functional groups are difficult to predict, because there are through-bond polarisation effects and long-range secondary electrostatic interactions that have significant effects on the interactions with solvents and other molecules. Here we use experimental measurements of association constants for formation of 1 : 1 H-bonded complexes that contain a single well-defined H-bond and a single well-defined secondary electrostatic interaction to quantify the magnitude of this effect. The results were used to develop a computational method for calculating functional group H-bond parameters that accurately reproduce the magnitudes of both primary H-bonding interaction and secondary electrostatic interactions.

The purpose of this study was to determine whether fibrinogen (FIB) modified with citrulline (CIT), malondialdehyde-acetaldehyde (MAA) or both leads to altered macrophage polarization, peptidyl arginine deiminase (PAD) expression, or production of citrullinated proteins.

In oxygenic photosynthesis, the cytochrome b6f (cytb6f) complex links the linear electron transfer (LET) reactions occurring at photosystems I and II and generates a transmembrane proton gradient via the Q-cycle. In addition to this central role in LET, cytb6f also participates in a range of processes including cyclic electron transfer (CET), state transitions and photosynthetic control. Many of the regulatory roles of cytb6f are facilitated by auxiliary proteins that differ depending upon the species, yet because of their weak and transient nature the structural details of these interactions remain unknown.

Objectives: Listening effort engages cognitive resources to support speech understanding in adverse listening conditions, and leads to fatigue over the longer term for people with hearing loss. Direct, neural measures of listening-related fatigue have not been developed. Here, event-related or phasic changes in alpha and theta oscillatory power during listening were used as measures of listening effort, and longer-term or tonic changes over the course of the listening task were assessed as measures of listening-related fatigue.

Inflammatory linear verrucous epidermal nevus (ILVEN) is a rare type of epidermal nevus, commonly arising in childhood. We present a case of a 13-year-old female with Blaschkoid psoriasiform plaques extending from her left foot to the scalp, sparing the right side of the body. Biomaterials that replicate patterns of microenvironmental signals from the stem cell niche offer the potential to refine platforms to regulate stem cell behavior. While significant emphasis has been placed on understanding the effects of biophysical and biochemical cues on stem cell fate, vascular-derived or angiocrine cues offer an important alternative signaling axis for biomaterial-based stem cell platforms. Elucidating dose-dependent relationships between angiocrine cues and stem cell fate are largely intractable in animal models and 2D cell cultures.
