Electrocardiogram (ECG) biometric provides an authentication to identify an individual on the basis of specific cardiac potential measured from a living body. Convolutional neural networks (CNN) outperform traditional ECG biometrics because convolutions can produce discernible features from ECG through machine learning. Phase space reconstruction (PSR), using a time delay technique, is one of the transformations from ECG to a feature map, without the need of exact R-peak alignment.

Here, we show that senescence triggered by BTG3 depletion was accompanied by a secretome enriched with cytokines, growth factors, and matrix-remodeling enzymes, which could promote angiogenesis and cell scattering in vitro. We present evidence that at least part of these activities can be explained by elevated HIF-1α activity.

Here, we provide evidence showing that N-terminal domain (aa1-75) of A26 protein is an acid-sensitive region that regulates membrane fusion. Crystal structure of A26 protein revealed that His48 and His53 are in close contact with Lys47, Arg57, His314 and Arg312, suggesting that at low pH these His-cation pairs could initiate conformational changes through protonation of His48 and His53 and subsequent electrostatic repulsion.

Objective: Primary aldosteronism is the most frequent cause of secondary hypertension and is associated with more prominent left ventricular hypertrophy and increased myocardial fibrosis. However, the reversibility of cardiac fibrosis is still unclear. Our objective was to investigate myocardial fibrosis in primary aldosteronism patients and its change after surgery.

Each μGC prototype has a pretrap and partially selective high-volume sampler of conventional design, a micromachined-Si focuser for injection, dual micromachined-Si columns for separation, and an integrated array of four microscale chemiresistors with functionalized gold nanoparticle interface films for multichannel detection. Scrubbed ambient air is used as the carrier gas.

The specific application being addressed concerns the problem of indoor air contamination by TCE vapor intrusion. The μGC prototype employs a microfabricated focuser, dual microfabricated separation columns, and a microsensor array.

Methods: We determined kidney function changes defined by cystatin C-based estimations of glomerular filtration rate (CysC-GFR). Pretreatment proteinuria and intrarenal Doppler velocimetric indices in primary aldosteronism were examined and followed after adrenalectomy or spironolactone treatment.
Background: Though aldosterone-renin ratio (ARR) is the current routine screening method for suspicious primary aldosteronism, we hypothesized that the simple formula combining body mass index (BMI) and serum potassium to urine potassium clearance (PUKC) ratio was comparable to ARR.
Methods: Records of patients who were referred to the National Taiwan University Hospital for investigation of primary aldosteronism from January 1995 through December 2007 were retrieved. Primary aldosteronism was diagnosed based on the modified 4-corners criteria, otherwise essential hypertension was diagnosed.

Objective: Current data on primary aldosteronism (PA) from Asian populations are scarce. This cohort study clarifies the attributes of patients with PA in a typical Chinese population.
Design: An observational cohort study.
This article describes the development and characterization of a multi-stage preconcentrator/focuser (PCF) module designed to be integrated with a microfabricated gas chromatograph (µGC) for autonomous, in situ determinations of volatile organic compounds. The PCF module has been optimized specifically for the determination of trichloroethylene (TCE) vapors at low- or sub-parts-per-billion concentrations in the presence of common indoor air co-contaminants in residences at risk of vapor intrusion (VI) from surrounding TCE-contaminated soil. It consists of three adsorbent-packed devices arranged in series: a pre-trap of conventional (tubular metal) design for capturing interferences with vapor pressures <3 torr; a high-volume sampler, also of conventional design, for capturing (and transferring) TCE and other compounds with vapor pressures within the range of ~3 to 95 torr; and a microfocuser (µF) consisting of a micromachined Si chamber with an integrated microheater for focusing and injecting samples into the separation module.

Methods: A prospectively defined survey was conducted on 602 patients who were suspected of PA in the multiple-center Taiwan Primary Aldosteronism Investigation (TAIPAI) database. Estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) was calculated and followed up at 1 yr after treatment.
Unlabelled: Recurrent cancer genome aberrations are indicators of residing crucial cancer genes. Although recent advances in genomic technologies have led to a global view of cancer genome aberrations, the identification of target genes and biomarkers from the aberrant loci remains difficult. To facilitate searches of cancer genes in human hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), we established a comprehensive protocol to analyze copy number alterations (CNAs) in cancer genomes using high-density single nucleotide polymorphism arrays with unpaired reference genomes.

A Hadamard-injector coupled with a capillary-based supersonic jet nozzle (capillary-injector) was also developed in this study.

Methods: A prospective, head-to-head study was conducted between Feb 2008 and Dec 2008. One hundred and fourteen patients enrolled and received captopril to aid in the diagnosis of PA in the TAIPAI intervention.
A novel Hadamard transform-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (HT-GC/MS) system equipped with on-line sample collection systems is described. A Hadamard-injector was successfully designed and then coupled with an on-line adsorption/desorption system for detecting volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and a supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) system, respectively, by HT-GC/MS. Six VOCs and three pesticides were used as model compounds.

Here, we report that BCAS2 directly interacts with p53 to reduce p53 transcriptional activity by mildly but consistently decreasing p53 protein in the absence of DNA damage. However, in the presence of DNA damage, BCAS2 prominently reduces p53 protein and provides protection against chemotherapeutic agent such as doxorubicin.

Background: Autonomous secretion of aldosterone in patients with primary aldosteronism increases glomerular filtration rate and causes kidney damage. The influence of a mild decrease in kidney function on residual hypertension after adrenalectomy is unexplored.
Study Design: Nonconcurrent prospective study.
Background: To assess whether angiotensin-II receptor blockers (ARBs) offer any additional advantage in confirming the diagnosis of primary aldosteronism (PA) and their use in the differentiation of PA subtypes.
Methods: A prospective, cohort, head-to-head study was conducted between July 2003 and July 2006. A total of 135 patients received captopril and losartan tests to confirm the diagnosis of PA in the TAIPAI (Taiwan Primary Aldosteronism Investigation) intervention.

The purpose of this research was to pursuit the quantification of microbial degradation capacity for 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) by detecting and quantifying a prominent 2,4-D degradation encoding plasmid. Batch reactor acclimation, de-acclimation, and re-acclimation tests were conducted during which periods the courses of 2,4-D dissipation and plasmid evolution were quantitatively measured. Pure cultures of bacterial strains were detected to give rise to a plasmid approximately the size of 90 kb after acclimation.

Traditional chemical, physical and biological processes for treating textile dye wastewaters have disadvantages such as high cost, energy waste and generating secondary pollution during the treatment process. The photocatalytic process using TiO2 semiconductor particles under UV light illumination has been shown to be potentially advantageous and applicable in the treatment of wastewater pollutants.
