Acute parotid gland enlargement in association with general anesthesia is rare and has also been called anesthesia mumps. We present two patients who were scheduled for lumbar spine surgery under general anesthesia. Each developed acute unilateral parotid gland enlargement over one side of the face proven by sonography.

Patients suffering from acromegaly are associated with increased risks of difficult airway management. We report a case of acromegaly scheduled for transsphenoidal resection of pituitary adenoma under general anesthesia in whom all possible means failed us in the insertion of the endotracheal tube (ET) through the mouth, a procedure essential for transsphenoidal surgery. The operation was called off and for securing his compromised airway a nasal ET was placed under fiberoptic bronchoscopy.

By testing industry standard techniques for radon progeny evaluation on air sample filters, a new technique is developed to evaluate transuranic activity on air filters by curve fitting the decay curves. The industry method modified here is simply the use of filter activity measurements at different times to estimate the air concentrations of radon progeny. The primary modification was to not look for specific radon progeny values but rather transuranic activity.

The outputs of two real-time radon monitors were compared with the output from a continuous air monitor (CAM) to evaluate the potential of predicting false CAM alarms. From the results obtained, it appears that the radon monitor will be able to indicate when large rapid changes in radon levels are occurring before the effect on a CAM has taken place.

In order to understand whether ingestion of seafood affects the urinary arsenic metabolites. About 42 women and 36 men were recruited from the students, parents and teachers in Taipei Medical University and National Taiwan University. The study subjects were interviewed about dietary habits, cigarette smoking habits, drug and vitamin intake, and consumption of seafood.
