Frequency effects of Chinese character processing in the brain: an event-related fMRI study.

Knowing how the brain processes Chinese characters of different frequencies of occurrence may shed light on the extent to which orthographic variations of different languages can influence reading processes in the brain. In the present study, event-related fMRI was used to investigate frequency effects on Chinese character processing. Reading low-frequency characters invoked higher activation in several brain regions including the left premotor/inferior frontal gyrus, supplementary motor area, left anterior insula, left posterior inferior temporal gyrus, left superior parietal cortex, and lingual cortex, while reading high-frequency characters resulted in higher activation in the left supramarginal/angular gyrus and left precuneus.

The clinical significance of venom detection in patients of cobra snakebite.

Cobra snakebites are one of the most frequent occurrences among the poisonous snakebites. The correlation between the serum concentrations of cobra venom in the victims with the severity of systemic and local symptoms after envenoming is still awaited for investigation. In this paper, we have developed an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) to detect Taiwan cobra venom existed in the serum of the cobra snakebite victims.

Paraoxonase activities in Minnan and Hakka.

Three phenotypes of paraoxonase (PON) have been found in population studies. The B type gene frequency varies among different populations. The Singaporean Chinese gene frequency is trimodal.

Fatty acid binding protein is a major determinant of hepatic pharmacokinetics of palmitate and its metabolites.

Disposition kinetics of [(3)H]palmitate and its low-molecular-weight metabolites in perfused rat livers were studied using the multiple-indicator dilution technique, a selective assay for [(3)H]palmitate and its low-molecular-weight metabolites, and several physiologically based pharmacokinetic models. The level of liver fatty acid binding protein (L-FABP), other intrahepatic binding proteins (microsomal protein, albumin, and glutathione S-transferase) and the outflow profiles of [(3)H]palmitate and metabolites were measured in four experimental groups of rats: 1) males; 2) clofibrate-treated males; 3) females; and 4) pregnant females. A slow-diffusion/bound model was found to better describe the hepatic disposition of unchanged [(3)H]palmitate than other pharmacokinetic models.

Multiple thrombotic occlusions of vessels after Russell's viper envenoming.

Systemic bleeding due to consumption coagulopathy and thrombocytopenia due to activation of procoagulants is the leading manifestation and cause of death in Russell's viper systemic envenoming. Thrombotic occlusion of the blood vessels is rare in cases of snakebite. In this report, two adult patients with Russell's viper systemic envenoming presented multiple cerebral infarctions, digital gangrenes and ischaemic organs in addition to typical clinical manifestations of bleeding diathesis and renal involvement.

Quantitative evaluation of altered hepatic spaces and membrane transport in fibrotic rat liver.

Four animal models were used to quantitatively evaluate hepatic alterations in this study: (1) a carbon tetrachloride control group (phenobarbital treatment only), (2) a CCl(4)-treated group (phenobarbital with CCl(4) treatment), (3) an alcohol-treated group (liquid diet with alcohol treatment), and (4) a pair-fed alcohol control group (liquid diet only). At the end of induction, single-pass perfused livers were used to conduct multiple indicator dilution (MID) studies. Hepatic spaces (vascular space, extravascular albumin space, extravascular sucrose space, and cellular distribution volume) and water hepatocyte permeability/surface area product were estimated from nonlinear regression of outflow concentration versus time profile data.

Eight cases of acute renal failure from Vipera russelli formosensis venom after administration of antivenom.

The six-valent antivenom from Vipera russelli formosensis in Taiwan has recently become available in Taiwan. Between June 1998 and December 2001 8 Vipera russelli formosensis snakebite victims were treated with antivenom within 24 h of snakebite. Bleeding stopped and coagulopathy improved after antivenom use, and neurotoxic symptoms were mild.

A signal transduction protein cues proteolytic events critical to Caulobacter cell cycle progression.

Temporally controlled proteolysis of the essential response regulator, CtrA, is critical for cell cycle progression in Caulobacter crescentus. CtrA binds to and silences the origin of replication in swarmer cells. The initiation of replication depends on the proteolysis of CtrA.

Russell's viper snakebite in Taiwan: differences from other Asian countries.

Formosan Russell's viper (Daboia russelli siamensis) is the sixth most frequent cause of snakebite in Taiwan. Its venom has been thought to have both neurotoxic and hematoxic properties. This viper's snakebite is rare and thus scarcely subjected to systemic studies.

The effect of codeine in anti-cough syrup on morphine screen.

Background: Codeine is a lawfully permitted ingredient of over-the-counter cold and cough medicines readily available to the public in Taiwan. Drug abusers often use it as a substitute for morphine and heroin, attributing the morphine in the urine test to therapeutic cough medicine. In the literature, several criteria for taking codeine, using a single large-dose model, have been proposed.

The mineralisation of methamidophos using ionised AN air water treatment pilot system and ultraviolet irradiation.

The degradation of methamidophos in pure bi-distilled water (with initial concentration 5 mg L(-1), pH = 7 at the beginning) was studied. For the first time, 2 ionised air water treatment pilot systems (IAPS-1, -2, no additives) were set up (Figs. 1 and 2).

Syntactic priming of nouns and verbs in Chinese.

Syntactic priming of Chinese nouns and verbs was investigated in word recognition (cued shadowing of auditory targets) and production (picture naming). Disyllabic compound words were presented after syntactically congruent, incongruent, or neutral auditory contexts, with a zero delay between offset of the context and onset of the target. Significant priming was observed in both tasks, including facilitation as well as inhibition.

Relationship of paraoxonase and serum lipids in Taiwan.

Paraoxonase (PON) is structurally associated with the high-density lipoprotein fraction of serum, suggesting a role for this enzyme in lipoprotein metabolism. In Chinese Singaporeans, triglycerides (TG) had significant positive correlation with PON but high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) did not. Our paper investigates the influence of PON on serum lipids under controlling confounding factors in Taiwanese.

Anticholinergic poisoning from a large dose of Scopolia extract.

Scopolia extract (SE) contains hyoscyamine and scopolamine, which are both anticholinergic. It is usually used as a patent medicine to treat gastrointestinal disorders, to relieve spasmotic discomfort, or to decrease the secretion of gastric acid. Poisoning by SE presents similar symptoms and signs as other types of anticholinergic poisoning.

Sandwich enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay for Taiwan cobra venom.

Poisonous snake bite victims usually have difficulty identifying the species, and clinical manifestations alone are not reliable because of overlapping symptoms. Thus, it is important to develop a quick and reliable mean of identifying the snake responsible. We describe the development of a sandwich-ELISA method for detection of venom in biological samples and apply it to a case of snakebite to confirm the clinical diagnosis.

Cationic drug pharmacokinetics in diseased livers determined by fibrosis index, hepatic protein content, microsomal activity, and nature of drug.

The disposition kinetics of six cationic drugs in perfused diseased and normal rat livers were determined by multiple indicator dilution and related to the drug physicochemical properties and liver histopathology. A carbon tetrachloride (CCl(4))-induced acute hepatocellular injury model had a higher fibrosis index (FI), determined by computer-assisted image analysis, than did an alcohol-induced chronic hepatocellular injury model. The alcohol-treated group had the highest hepatic alpha(1)-acid glycoprotein, microsomal protein (MP), and cytochrome P450 (P450) concentrations.

Structural basis of tropism of Escherichia coli to the bladder during urinary tract infection.

The first step in the colonization of the human urinary tract by pathogenic Escherichia coli is the mannose-sensitive binding of FimH, the adhesin present at the tip of type 1 pili, to the bladder epithelium. We elucidated crystallographically the interactions of FimH with D-mannose. The unique site binding pocket occupied by D-mannose was probed using site-directed mutagenesis.

Contamination by selected chlorinated pesticides in surface waters in Hanoi, Vietnam.

Fifteen insecticides, which were banned in Vietnam in the period from 1990 to 1998, were chosen for the investigation of surface water samples in Hanoi and its surroundings. The investigation was focused on an area of approximately 30 by 20 km. Thirty water samples, in total were analysed: 11 samples from the Red river, seven from the Duong river, four from various lakes (West lake, Thuyen Quang, Bay Mau, Ba Mau), six from irrigation canals and two samples from wells.

Hemolytic anemia after methylene blue therapy for aniline-induced methemoglobinemia.

Methylene blue is utilized as the main treatment of methemoglobinemia conventionally, but it may be ineffective in individuals with glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency. We report a G6PD-deficient patient who suffered from aniline-induced methemoglobinemia with initial good response Heinz body but hemolytic anemia appeared later 3 d after methylene blue therapy. G6PD deficiency was identified.

A left-lateralized network for reading Chinese words: a 3 T fMRI study.

fMRI was used to investigate brain organization for reading in Chinese. Subjects were shown two-character Chinese words. A control task was used to eliminate the non-linguistic visual and motor confounds.

Ductal lavage for detection of cellular atypia in women at high risk for breast cancer.

Background: Breast cancer originates in breast epithelium and is associated with progressive molecular and morphologic changes. Women with atypical breast ductal epithelial cells have an increased relative risk of breast cancer. In this study, ductal lavage, a new procedure for collecting ductal cells with a microcatheter, was compared with nipple aspiration with regard to safety, tolerability, and the ability to detect abnormal breast epithelial cells.

Snakebite complicated with Vibrio vulnificus infection.

Snakebite may be complicated with bacteria infections, most of which are Gram-negative bacillus. Snakebite complicated with Vibrio vulnificus infection has not been reported previously. Vibrio vulnificus infection is characterized by a necrotizing wound infection similar to the local lesion of severe snakebite.

Hyperbaric oxygen for carbon monoxide poisoning-induced delayed neuropsychiatric sequelae.

The clinical manifestations of delayed neuropsychiatric sequelae after carbon monoxide (CO) intoxication are variable. In addition, there is no specific therapy for these complications. Fortunately, these complications have occurred less frequently in recent years, probably due to the usage of hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) therapy.
