Background: In 2013, the British Columbia (BC) Childhood Nephrotic Syndrome Clinical Pathway (CNSCP) was developed to standardize the care of children with nephrotic syndrome (NS). In BC, children access nephrology care at BC Children's Hospital (BCCH) and multiple regional clinics.

Introduction: A reninoma (juxtaglomerular cell tumor) is a rare cause of secondary hypertension that can present with headaches alongside the triad of severe hypertension, hypokalemia, and metabolic alkalosis.

Case Presentation: We describe a case of a 15-year-old previously healthy girl who presented with headaches and hypertensive urgency who had severe hypokalemia, moderate hyponatremia, and elevated aldosterone and renin levels. Abdominal ultrasound and MRI with contrast revealed a unilateral mass localized to the right kidney.

Background: Our multidisciplinary clinical pathway for treatment of childhood nephrotic syndrome (NS) was established with the goal of standardizing local clinical practice. This descriptive study aimed to assess nutrient intakes of children with newly diagnosed NS compared with nutrition goals defined by our pathway.

Methods: Our pathway includes evidence-based recommendations that target daily intakes during corticosteroid induction therapy: energy (Estimated Energy Requirements (EER) × Sedentary Physical Activity (PA)), sodium (1 mg/kcal), calcium (Dietary Reference Intake (DRI) + 500 mg elemental calcium), and vitamin D (DRI +800-1000 IU).

Element:Ca ratios in the otolith cores of young-of-the-year (YOY) swordfish, Xiphias gladius, were used as natural tracers to predict the nursery origin of subadult and adult swordfish from three foraging grounds in the North Pacific Ocean (NPO). First, the chemistry of otolith cores (proxy for nursery origin) was used to develop nursery-specific elemental signatures in YOY swordfish. Sagittal otoliths of YOY swordfish were collected from four regional nurseries in the NPO between 2000 and 2005: (1) Central Equatorial North Pacific Ocean (CENPO), (2) Central North Pacific Ocean (CNPO), (3) Eastern Equatorial North Pacific Ocean (EENPO) and (4) Western North Pacific Ocean (WNPO).

It has been suggested that its adaptive function is to maintain locomotion in a relatively constant general direction while negotiating obstacles. Forty years ago, the 'life-dinner principle' was proposed as an example of an asymmetry that may lead prey species to experience stronger selection than their predators, thus accounting for the high frequency with which prey escape alive from interaction with a predator. This principle remains an influential concept in the scientific literature, despite several works suggesting that the concept relies on many under-appreciated assumptions and does not apply as generally as was initially proposed. Here, we present a novel model describing a very different asymmetry to that proposed in the life-dinner principle, but one that could apply broadly.

Pearson's product moment correlation coefficient (more commonly Pearson's r) tends to underestimate correlations that exist in the underlying population. This phenomenon is generally unappreciated in studies of ecology, although a range of corrections are suggested in the statistical literature. The use of Pearson's r as the classical measure for correlation is widespread in ecology, where manipulative experiments are impractical across the large spatial scales concerned; it is therefore vital that ecologists are able to use this correlation measure as effectively as possible.

This is the report from the fifth meeting of the Harmonising Outcome Measures for Eczema initiative (HOME V). The meeting was held on 12-14 June 2017 in Nantes, France, with 81 participants. Abstract: Thanatosis-also known as death-feigning and, we argue more appropriately, tonic immobility (TI)-is an under-reported but fascinating anti-predator strategy adopted by diverse prey late on in the predation sequence, and frequently following physical contact by the predator. TI is thought to inhibit further attack by predators and reduce the perceived need of the predator to subdue prey further. The behaviour is probably present in more taxa than is currently described, but even within well-studied groups the precise taxonomic distribution is unclear for a number of practical and ethical reasons.

Limits to the precision of circular data often cause grouping of data points into discrete categories, but the effects of grouping on tests for circular uniformity have been little explored. The Rayleigh test is often applied to grouped circular data, despite it being designed for continuous data and the statistical literature recommending a suite of alternative tests specifically designed for grouped data. Here, we investigated the performance of the Rayleigh test relative to four alternatives for testing the null hypothesis of uniformity in grouped circular data.
