Background: Young adult veterans who served after the September 11 attacks on the United States in 2001 (ie, post-9/11) are at heightened risk for experiencing behavioral health distress and disorders including hazardous drinking, posttraumatic stress disorder, and depression. These veterans often face significant barriers to behavioral health treatment, and reaching them through brief mobile phone-based interventions may help reduce drinking and promote treatment engagement.

Objective: Following a successful pilot study, this randomized controlled trial (RCT) aims to further test the efficacy of a brief (ie, single session) mobile phone-delivered personalized normative feedback intervention enhanced with content to promote treatment engagement.

Pregaming is a popular but high-risk drinking behavior common among college students. Although sexual and gender minority (SGM) college students are a vulnerable population with regards to hazardous alcohol use and alcohol consequences, there is currently limited research investigating the pregaming behavior of this group. The present study aimed to (1) examine mean level differences in pregaming behaviors and motives between SGM and non-SGM college students and (2) explore how SGM status was associated with pregaming behaviors and if SGM status moderated the association between motives and pregaming behaviors.

Endogenous endocannabinoids such as N-arachidonoylethanolamine (AEA) and 2-arachidonoylglycerol (2-AG) are involved in the patho-biochemistry of several neurological diseases and have been associated with mood-enhancing phenomena. Although they have been intensively studied in recent years, accurate and reliable quantification of these analytes in cerebral interstitial fluid (cISF) to elucidate their neuro-modulatory role is still challenging. Moreover, there is a need for an analytical method that can analyze plasma in addition to cISF and is thus able to address research questions in both preclinical and clinical studies.

Article Synopsis
  • Military veterans with combat injuries often experience pain, stress, and depressive disorder, and these factors may be interlinked, especially in those with depression.
  • A study of 902 combat-injured veterans over 18 months found that pain and perceived stress are bidirectionally related, predominantly in veterans with depressive disorder.
  • The findings suggest that treatment for veterans should address both pain and psychological issues, particularly when depressive symptoms are present.

Section 702 of the fiscal year 2019 National Defense Authorization Act directed the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) to conduct a pilot study to assess the feasibility and advisability of using intensive outpatient treatment programs to address posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and associated mental health problems among service members who have experienced sexual harassment or sexual assault while in the military.

Background: Military spouses and partners in relationships with a heavy drinking service member report high levels of mental health concerns and consequences, which are compounded when both partners drink heavily. Military spouses and partners -termed "concerned partners" (CPs)-may be an important gateway for motivating service members (SMs) to seek care. However, CPs may first need to reduce their own drinking and improve their communication to effectively support and encourage changes for their service member partner.

The increasing relevance of improved therapeutic monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) to treat neurodegenerative diseases has strengthened the need to reliably measure their brain pharmacokinetic (PK) profiles. The aim of this study was, therefore, to absolutely quantify the therapeutic antibody ocrelizumab (OCR) as a model antibody in mouse brain interstitial fluid (ISF), and to record its PK profile by using cerebral open flow microperfusion (cOFM). Further, to monitor the blood-brain barrier (BBB) integrity using an endogenous antibody with a similar molecular size as OCR.

Background: Orthotopic xenograft studies promote the development of targeted/personalized therapies to improve the still poor life expectancy of glioblastoma patients.

New Method: We implemented an atraumatic access to glioblastoma with cerebral Open Flow Microperfusion (cOFM) by implantation of xenograft cells in rat brain with intact blood brain barrier (BBB) and subsequent development of a xenograft glioblastoma at the interface between the cOFM probe and surrounding brain tissue. Human glioma U87MG cells were implanted at a well-defined position into immunodeficient Rowett nude rat´s brain via cOFM (cOFM group) and syringe (control group).

Objective: Pregaming is among the riskiest drinking behaviors in which college students engage, often leading to elevated blood alcohol levels and negative alcohol-related consequences. Yet, tailored interventions to reduce risk associated with pregaming are lacking. The present study was designed to develop and evaluate the efficacy of a brief, mobile-based intervention targeting heavy drinking during pregaming among college students, called Pregaming Awareness in College Environments (PACE).

In vivo investigation of brain pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics (PK/PD) is an integral part of neurological drug development. However, drugs intended to act in the brain may reach it at very low concentrations due to the protective effect of the blood-brain barrier (BBB). Consequently, very sensitive measurement methods are required to investigate PK/PD of drugs in the brain.

Objective: Single-component personalized normative feedback (PNF) interventions and multicomponent personalized feedback interventions (PFI) have been shown to reduce alcohol consumption among college students. The present study compared the efficacy of PNF interventions targeting descriptive norms alone (descriptive PNF), injunctive norms alone (injunctive PNF), or their combination (combined PNF), against a multicomponent PFI and an attention control condition.

Method: Undergraduates ( = 1,137) across two universities who reported a minimum of one past-month episode of heavy episodic drinking (i.

Alcohol consumption has been associated with increased risk for sexual violence victimization and perpetration. Pregaming, a popular activity among college students that involves heavy and quick drinking prior to going out for the night and often results in high blood alcohol levels (BALs), may convey increased risk for sexual violence-potentially due to greater likelihood of contact with intoxicated perpetrators and significantly impaired victim ability to consent or resist. Yet no published work has evaluated whether there is increased risk for victimization on drinking days that involve pregaming.

We present the synthesis and reactivity of a newly developed, cyclen-based tris-aryloxide ligand precursor, namely cyclen(Me)( ArOH), and its coordination chemistry to uranium. The corresponding uranium(iii) complex [U((OAr )(Me)cyclen)] (1) was characterized by H NMR analysis, CHN elemental analysis and UV/vis/NIR electronic absorption spectroscopy. Since no single-crystals suitable for X-ray diffraction analysis could be obtained from this precursor, 1 was oxidized with methylene chloride or silver fluoride to yield [(cyclen(Me)( ArO))U(X)] (X = Cl (2), F (3)), which were unambiguously characterized and successfully crystallized to gain insight into the molecular structure by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis (SC-XRD).

The case study was conducted in an underground coal mine to characterize submicron aerosols at a continuous miner (CM) section, assess the concentrations of diesel aerosols at the longwall (LW) section, and assess the exposures of selected occupations to elemental carbon (EC) and total carbon (TC). The results show that aerosols at the CM sections were a mixture of aerosols freshly generated at the outby portion of the CM section and those generated in the main drifts that supply "fresh air" to the section. The relatively low ambient concentrations and personal exposures of selected occupations suggest that currently applied control strategies and technologies are relatively effective in curtailing exposures to diesel aerosols.

The COVID-19 pandemic prompted sweeping changes to behavioral health care delivery in the Military Health System (MHS), which turned to telehealth to minimize disruptions and ensure continuity of care for service members. Four to seven months into the pandemic, MHS behavioral health staff at ten military treatment facilities shared their experiences using telehealth and their perspectives on its utility, barriers to its wider integration in the MHS, and concerns about its use in the post-pandemic future. Telehealth use was previously low across the MHS, but it increased dramatically with the onset of the pandemic.

Background: Pregaming is a high-drink context popular among college students that often leads to elevated blood alcohol levels and negative consequences. Over 15 years of research studies have demonstrated that pregaming represents one of the riskiest known behaviors among college students, yet no pregaming-specific interventions have been developed to help prevent this behavior. General brief interventions for students do not reduce pregaming behavior and may not be appropriate, as they do not help students develop skills unique to the pregaming context that could help them drink less.

This paper describes a new approach to the early-stage optimization of topical products and selection of lead formulation candidates. It demonstrates the application of open flow microperfusion in vitro in conjunction with the Franz diffusion cell to compare time-resolved, 24-hour profiles of diclofenac passive diffusion through all skin layers (including the skin barrier, dermis, and subcutis) resulting from nine topical formulations of different composition. The technique was successfully validated for in vitro sampling of diclofenac in interstitial fluid.
