Background: Even though electrical injuries are common in the emergency room, guidelines, consensus, and general recommendations for the management of these patients do not exist in Europe. Documented cases of delayed arrhythmias are rare and their connection with electrical injury has not been fully confirmed. We also use cardio-specific markers for the risk stratification of myocardial injury, but there is no significant study referring to their utility in this clinical situation.

Objectives: Stroke volume (SV) and cardiac output monitoring is a cornerstone of hemodynamic assessment. Noninvasive technologies are increasingly used in children. This study compared SV measurements obtained by transcutaneous Doppler ultrasound techniques (ultrasonic cardiac output monitor [USCOM]), transthoracic echocardiography jugular (TTE-J), and parasternal (TTE-P) views performed by pediatric intensivists (OP-As) with limited training in cardiac sonography (20 previous examinations) and pediatric cardiologists (OP-Bs) with limited training in USCOM (30 previous examinations) in spontaneously ventilating children.

This study examines the correlation between athletic identity and academic major selection among intercollegiate student-athletes. A thorough review of literature focusing on academic clustering, athletic identity, and academic development leads to the development of two hypotheses - 1) student-athletes with stronger athletic identity will have a declared major of decreased academic rigor; and 2) student-athletes with stronger athletic identity will be more likely to be undecided on their major. Although classification of astrocytic tumors is standardized by the WHO grading system, which is mainly based on microscopy-derived, histomorphological features, there is great interobserver variability. The main causes are thought to be the complexity of morphological details varying from tumor to tumor and from patient to patient, variations in the technical histopathological procedures like staining protocols, and finally the individual experience of the diagnosing pathologist. Thus, to raise astrocytoma grading to a more objective standard, this paper proposes a methodology based on atomic force microscopy (AFM) derived images made from histopathological samples in combination with data mining techniques.

Standard myeloablative conditioning prior to allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell (HSC) transplantation has been associated with significant toxicity in patients older than 45 years of age with myelofibrosis with myeloid metaplasia (MMM). We sought to evaluate the efficacy of a reduced-intensity conditioning regimen for allogeneic HSC transplantation in this setting. A regimen consisting of fludarabine (30 mg/m(2) intravenously daily for 5 days) and melphalan (70 mg/m(2) intravenously daily for 2 days) followed by transplantation of filgrastim-mobilized peripheral blood cells from HLA-identical siblings was administered to 4 older patients (median age, 56 years; range, 48-58 years) with advanced MMM.

Severe regimen-related toxicity often complicates second transplant procedures performed in patients with hematological malignancies that have relapsed after an initial hematopoietic stem cell (HSC) transplant. Therefore, we studied the safety and efficacy of a reduced-intensity fludarabine and melphalan based conditioning regimen in 11 patients who had relapsed following an autologous (n = 7) or allogeneic (n = 4) HSC transplant.
