The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between P gingivalis, T forsythia, T denticola, P intermedia, and A. actinomycetemcomitans in the sulci or pockets of patients with gingivitis (G), mild chronic periodontitis (MiCP), moderate chronic periodontitis (MoCP) and severe periodontitis (SP), and the expression of TNF-alpha in gingival tissue associated with clinical parameters. Six patients with G, 7 with MiCP, 23 with MoCP and 7 with SP were recruited.

Unlabelled: In the blood of chagasic patients, a high number of T-lymphocytes producers of a PA.S.-positive substance was found, more numerous in chagasics with abnormal electrocardiogram.

In human Chagas'disease previous work has shown the occurrence of a T-lymphocyte CD4-positive population (a high producer of PAS-positive glycoproteins) with evidence suggesting a role in the formation of damages to the myocardium and neural structures in chagasic heart disease (ChHD). Other workers have taken such facts into consideration and have employed gangliosides (biological substances with neurotrophic and immunomodulatory properties) in chagasics with chronic cardiomyopathy and disautonomic signs, obtaining an Improvement in functional signs and a decrease in the number of PAS+ lymphocytes. In the present work we have studied the effect of mixed gangliosides (Cronassial on cell cultures of total leukocytes, or on mononuclear cells prepared through Ficoll-Hypaque.

Unlabelled: The purpose of this work was to obtain new data on factors intervening in the production and progression of human chagasic cardiopathy (HChC) with death by cardiac failure. We studied cardiac samples of patients that died at an early mean age versus others that died at older ages. The infiltrating cells were characterized and quantified by means of specific monoclonal antibodies and inmunohistochemical methodology; and by classical histological and histochemical methods.
