A 73-year-old former smoker with previous occupational exposure to asbestos presented with a pneumothorax that was initially managed by simple aspiration. Despite this, it re-accumulated and a bronchopleural fistula was suspected. A video-assisted thoracoscopic procedure was performed and revealed an abnormally thickened pleura that turned out to be a mesothelioma.

These responses are driven primarily by stimulation of photosensitive retinal ganglion cells (pRGCs) that are most sensitive to short-wavelength ( approximately 480 nm) blue light and remain functional in the absence of rods and cones. We examined the spectral sensitivity of non-image-forming responses in two profoundly blind subjects lacking functional rods and cones (one male, 56 yr old; one female, 87 yr old).

The fact that exercise-induced bronchoconstriction (EIB) may be both over- and underdiagnosed in athletes has led to calls for widespread screening for the condition. This article assesses such a strategy by employing the standard framework used when evaluating any screening policy. This approach highlights a number of concerns and allows recommendations to help optimize the success of such a strategy if it were to be implemented.

In most female moths, pheromone biosynthesis activating neuropeptide (PBAN) regulates sex pheromone production by stimulating an influx of extracellular Ca(2+). Little is known about the plasma membrane channel or how the PBAN stimulus is communicated to the channel. Fluorescent Ca(2+) imaging techniques confirmed PBAN-induced Ca(2+) influx in the silkworm, Bombyx mori, and showed that the PBAN response is reduced with repeated stimulation.

Submonolayer amounts of Fn were immobilized onto the AFM tip by two different methods, using either a sulfosuccinimidyl-4-(N-maleimidomethyl) cycholhexane-1-carboxylate (SMCC) linker or a pyridyldithio poly(ethylene glycol) succinimidylpropionate (NHS-PEG-PDP) linker. Each step of both immobilization methods was characterized using x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy.

Materials: A syrup containing 15 mg dextromethorphan hydrobromide, 7.5 mg doxylamine succinate, 600 mg paracetamol and 8 mg ephedrine sulfate (Wick MediNait produced by WICK Pharma, Germany, a subsidiary of Procter & Gamble GmbH; test syrup) or placebo (placebo syrup) for oral administration.

Design: Prospective animal study.
A 25-year-old pregnant patient developed life-threatening asthma refractory to all standard treatment including anaesthetic agents. Ventilatory pressures continued to rise with impending cardio-respiratory arrest. The introduction of nebulised endotracheal DNase however resulted in a rapid and dramatic improvement with good clinical outcome.

The concentration of fine particulate nitrate, sulfate, and carbonaceous material was measured for 12-hr day-night samples using diffusion denuder samplers during the Project Measurement of Haze and Visibility Effects (MOHAVE) July to August 1992 Summer Intensive study at Meadview, AZ, just west of Grand Canyon National Park. Organic material was measured by several techniques. Only the diffusion denuder method measured the semivolatile organic material.

Objective: Our purpose was to evaluate the feasibility and the outcome of endoluminal closure of a small perforation of the colon with a novel clip device, the InScope MultiClip Applier (IMCA), and to assess the number of clips required for successful closure.
Design: Prospective controlled study.
It appears that, for many genes, the two alleles possessed by an individual may produce different amounts of transcript. When such allelic differences in transcription are observed for some individuals but not others, a plausible explanation is genetic variation in the cis-acting elements that regulate the gene in question. Here we describe a novel analytical approach that uses such observations, combined with genotyping data from the HapMap project, to define the genomic location of cis-acting regulatory elements.
