Hypothermia: Pathophysiology and the propensity for infection.

Hypothermia in combination with infection presents a complex challenge in clinical and battlefield medicine. Multifaceted physiological and immunological consequences of hypothermia drastically change the risk, progression, and treatment of a concomitant infection. Managing hypothermia and infection in extreme cold settings is particularly relevant in an era with increased risk of military operations in Polar climates.

Inflammatory disease status and response to TNF blockade are associated with mechanisms of endotoxin tolerance.

The mechanisms of endotoxin tolerance (ET), which down-regulate inflammation, are well described in response to exogenous toll-like receptor ligands, but few studies have focused on ET-associated mechanisms in inflammatory disease. As blocking TNF can attenuate the development of ET, the effect of anti-TNF on the expression of key ET-associated molecules in inflammatory auto-immune disease was measured; changes in inflammatory gene expression were confirmed using an ET bioassay. The expression of immunomodulatory molecules was measured in a murine model of arthritis treated with anti-TNF and the expression of ET-associated molecules was measured in whole blood in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and ankylosing spondylitis (AS) patients, before and after therapy.

Surveillance of Antimicrobial Use in Long-Term Care Facilities: An Antimicrobial Mapping Survey.

Objectives: To explore antimicrobial management processes in Australian residential aged care facilities (RACFs), including antimicrobial prescribing, supply, administration, and documentation to inform surveillance activities.

Design: Voluntary, online cross-sectional survey.

Setting And Participants: The survey was disseminated to all South Australian RACFs (n = 237) seeking participation from an infection prevention and control lead (preferred respondent), a nurse or senior RACF staff member, or an aged care pharmacist.

Background: Primary sclerosing cholangitis is a progressive inflammatory liver disease characterized by biliary and liver fibrosis. Vascular adhesion protein-1 (VAP-1) is important in the inflammatory process driving liver fibrosis. We evaluated the safety and efficacy of VAP-1 blockade with a monoclonal antibody (timolumab, BTT1023) in patients with primary sclerosing cholangitis.

PREF-NET: a patient preference and experience study of lanreotide autogel administered in the home versus hospital setting among patients with gastroenteropancreatic neuroendocrine tumours in the UK.

Purpose: PREF-NET reported patients' experience of Somatuline® (lanreotide) Autogel® (LAN) administration at home and in hospital among patients with gastroenteropancreatic neuroendocrine tumours (GEP-NETs).

Methods: PREF-NET was a multicentre, cross-sectional study of UK adults (aged ≥ 18 years) with GEP-NETs receiving a stable dose of LAN, which comprised of (1) a quantitative online survey, and (2) qualitative semi-structured interviews conducted with a subgroup of survey respondents. The primary objective was the description of overall patient preference for home versus hospital administration of LAN.

Background: Understanding how analgesics are used in different countries can inform initiatives to improve the pharmacological management of pain in nursing homes.

Aims: To compare patterns of analgesic use among Australian and Japanese nursing home residents; and explore Australian and Japanese healthcare professionals' perspectives on analgesic use.

Methods: Part one involved a cross-sectional comparison among residents from 12 nursing homes in South Australia (N = 550) in 2019 and four nursing homes in Tokyo (N = 333) in 2020.

Introduction: The current study explores the relation between parent involvement and children's school readiness for 568 families enrolled in the Home Instruction of Preschool Youngsters (HIPPY) program in Texas. Parent involvement in children's learning is a focus of the HIPPY curriculum.

Methods: In this analysis, conditional process models were run to examine the relations between children's school readiness and engagement in home learning activities, parents' education level, program language (English or Spanish), both before and after completing a year of the program.

The NIH Toolbox Cognitive Battery (NIHTB-CB) was developed as a common-metric, computerized cognitive screener for research. Although extensively normed and validated in Americans of different ethnicities, there is little data on how generalizable such results would be when used outside of the United States. The objective of this study was to assess measurement invariance (MI) of the NIHTB-CB across Jamaican and African-American samples and determine appropriateness of comparisons across groups.

The prevalence of problematic Internet use (PIU) and its associated negative outcomes among college students has been heavily researched in developed countries. However, despite the increased accessibility of the Internet and indicators which may suggest PIU in developing countries such as Jamaica, PIU in this context remains grossly understudied. This study surveyed 277 Jamaican university students and found evidence of PIU, with younger respondents (ages 18-23) at risk.

Introduction: Digital mental health tools have become popular alternatives to traditional psychotherapy.
