The nucleotide sequences of eight open reading frames (ORFs) located at the 5' end of the unique long region of the duck enteritis virus (DEV) Clone-03 strain were determined. The genes identified were designated UL1, UL2, UL3, UL4, UL5, UL6 and UL7 homologues of the herpes simplex virus 1 (HSV-1). The DEV UL3.

This study focuses on the role of amino acids in xylem sap of tomato grown in hydroponics in a medium supplemented with a series of concentration of La and Y. Eighteen amino acids in xylem saps were identified and measured by reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography. The main amino acids in xylem sap samples of the tomato are histidine, tryptophan, aspartic acid, and glutamic acid.

Effects of low-molecular-weight organic acids on the accumulation and transportation of gadolinium (Gd) in tomato plants were studied under hydroponic condition. The results indicated that changes of organic acids occurred in the processes of Gd accumulation and transportation in tomato plants which were treated with extraneous Gd solutions. Malic, citric, and succinic acids contributed to both Gd accumulation in roots and transportation in xylem vessels.

Objective: To understand the evolutionary relationship of duck enteritis virus (DEV) in the family Herpesviridae and the genome organization of DEV.

Methods: A modified 'targeted gene walking PCR' method was used to amplify the unknown gene of DEV Clone-03 strain adjacent to a short stretch of known sequence. The assembled unknown fragment was confirmed to be a homologue of herpesviruses by BLAST analysis and comparison with other herpesviruses homologues.

With the degraded red soils of eroded bare land (I), xeric mesophilous herbosa (II), sparse coniferous woodland (III), coniferous woodland (IV), coniferous-broadleaf mixed woodland (V), and evergreen broadleaf forest (CK) as test objects, this paper studied the effects of vegetation restoration on the collembolan communities in degraded red soil. A total of 23 genera belonging to seven families and two suborders were observed, including dominant taxa such as Folsomia, Folsomina, and Sminthurinus. The characteristics of soil collembolan community were analyzed by using the indices such as individual density, taxa number, diversity, abundance, and evenness.

A 30-day incubation test was conducted to investigate the effects of treatments earthworm (E), bacteria (Pseudomonas putida) (B) and earthworm-bacteria (BE) on the degradation of soil phenanthrene. The degradation rate of soil phenanthrene at its initial concentration of 50 mg x kg(-1) was in the sequence of BE > B > E > CK, and that at the concentration of 150 mg x kg(-1) was 98.86% in BE, being significantly higher than that in CK and E.

Based on high spatial resolution remote sensing map (1 m) and sampling with a stratified design on different site types, the effects of fine-scale land use patterns in villages on top soil (0-30 cm) organic carbon (OC), total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP) within and across the densely populated hilly landscapes, i. e., Sichuan Hilly Region (SIHR; Jintang County, Sichuan Province), Subtropical Hilly Region (SUHR; Yiyang County, Hunan Province), and Tropical Hilly Region (THR; Dianbai County, Guangdong Province), were investigated.

To elucidate the role of low molecular weight chelators in long-distance root-to-shoot transport of heavy metals in Indian mustard, an "off-line" size exclusion high-performance liquid chromatography-graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry was developed to investigate heavy metals associated with low molecular weight chelators in xylem saps of Indian mustard (Brassica juncea). The size exclusion chromatogram presented only the peaks with molecular weight for all xylem saps and directly indicated the long-distance transport of phytochelatins (PCs) of Indian mustard under Cd stress. In the absence of Cd stress, only organic acids and inorganic anions participated in the long-distance transport of Cd, but organic acids, inorganic anions, glutathione (GSH), and cysteine might relate to the long-distance transport of Cu or Zn.

A 16.6-kilo-base pair (kb) sequence was amplified from the duck enteritis virus (DEV) clone-03 strain genome using 'targeted gene walking polymerase chain reaction (PCR)'. Seven complete open reading frames (ORFs) were predicted, and designated herpes simplex virus 1 (HSV-1) homologues, unique long (UL) 25, UL26, UL26.

The study with gnotobiotic microcosm showed within the range of test soil moisture contents, the feeding activity of Caenorhabditis elegans on Bacillus subtilis promoted the latter' s proliferation, and enhanced soil respiration significantly. The increment of B. subtilis number varied with soil moisture content, and decreased in the order of 23% > 17% > 28% .

Background & Objective: Nasopharynx is a commonly involved site of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL), but the differences of clinical characteristics, prognosis, and treatment strategy between B-cell and NK/T-cell nasopharyngeal NHL have seldom been reported. This study was to investigate the clinical manifestations and treatment outcomes of primary B-cell and NK/T-cell nasopharyngeal NHL at early stage, and evaluate the prognostic differences, so as to provide evidences for treatment optimization.

Methods: Clinical data of 80 patients with previously untreated nasopharyngeal NHL at early stage, admitted from May 1987 to Nov.

Duck enteritis virus (DEV) is classified to the family Herpesviridae, but has not been grouped into any genus so far. Four overlapped fragments were amplified from the DEV genome with polymerase chain reaction (PCR). The assembled length of the four fragments was 6,202 bp, which contained the genes encoding unique long (UL) 24, thymidine kinase (TK) and glycoprotein H (gH) proteins.

A gnotobiotic microcosm experiment was conducted to study the interactions between bacteria-feeding nematode Caenorhabditis elegans and bacterium Bacillus subtilis, and their effects on soil nitrogen mineralization at different Caenorhabditis elegans density. The results showed that the inoculation of the nematode stimulated the growth of the bacterium, and the increment was in order of 20>10>40 nematodes x g(-1) dried soil. The interaction between Caenorhabditis elegans and Bacillus subtilis significantly enhanced soil respiration rate and soil invertase, urease and phosphatase activities, with no significant differences among three test nematode densities.

Chloroplasts and chlorophylls were isolated from the leaves of Dicranopteris linearis, a natural perennial fern sampled at rare earth element (REE) mining areas in the South-Jiangxi region (southern China). The inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) results indicated that REEs were present in the chloroplasts and chlorophylls of D. linearis.

The growth kinetics of colloidal Al(III)-containing particles (diameter<1000 nm), nucleated in optically clear, supersaturated sodium aluminate solutions as a precursor to Al(OH)(3) crystals, has been studied using dynamic light scattering. Two series of solutions were examined at 22 degrees C to determine the influence of Al(III) supersaturation and NaOH concentration on the initial particle growth behavior. One solution series consisted of solutions with constant Al(III) absolute supersaturation (DeltaC) of 1.

This study was conducted at the long-term experimental plots in Ecological Experimental Station of Red Soil in Yujiang County (28 degrees 15'30''N, 116 degrees 55'30''E ), Jiangxi Province, subtropical China. Earthworm population was investigated seasonally from May 1999 to February 2000, under different vegetations including four artificial woodlands [deciduous broadleaf woodland (Quercus chenii, Qc), evergreen broadleaf woodland (Schima superba, Ss), coniferous woodland (Pinus massonina, Pm) and mixed woodland (Schima superba-Pinus massonina, Sm)], two grasslands [gently-disturbed grassland (G1), undisturbed grassland (G2)] and control wasteland (CK). The results indicated that the population structure was very simple.
