Optimal treatment in patients with refractory or relapsed peripheral T-cell lymphomas (R/R T-NHLs) is unknown. In this population-based study, outcomes in R/R peripheral T-cell lymphoma not otherwise specified (PTCL NOS), angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma (AITL), and anaplastic lymphoma kinase-positive (ALK+) and ALK-negative (ALK-) anaplastic large cell lymphoma (ALCL) were evaluated. Patients with PTCL NOS, AITL, ALK+ ALCL, and ALK- ALCL (≥18 years) diagnosed in 2014 to 2019 were identified using the Netherlands Cancer Registry.

This article is looking at colonial governance with regard to leprosy, comparing two settings of the Dutch colonial empire: Suriname and the Dutch East Indies. Whereas segregation became formal policy in Suriname, leprosy sufferers were hardly ever segregated in the Dutch East Indies. We argue that the perceived needs to maintain a healthy labour force and to prevent contamination of white populations were the driving forces behind the difference in response to the disease.

Background: Preoperative portal vein embolization is widely used to increase the future remnant liver. Identification of nonresponders to portal vein embolization is essential because these patients may benefit from associating liver partition and portal vein ligation for staged hepatectomy (ALPPS), which induces a more powerful hypertrophy response. Background: The bile salt-activated transcription factor farnesoid X receptor (FXR) is a key mediator of proliferative bile salt signalling, which is assumed to play a role in the early phase of compensatory liver growth. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of a potent FXR agonist (obeticholic acid, OCA) on liver growth following portal vein embolization (PVE).

This article outlines the historical development of the principle of patients' free choice of doctor in the Netherlands. Far from being the result of debates on patients' rights, this principle was used instead as an instrument by the medical profession to gain a foothold in the power relations between doctors and sickness funds back in the early 20th-century. This development created a medical power bloc that lasted for most of that century and forced sickness funds and private insurers to start organizing in this fashion too.

Introduction: Acetaminophen (paracetamol) is mainly metabolized via glucuronidation and sulphation, while the minor pathway through cytochrome P450 (CYP) 2E1 is held responsible for hepatotoxicity. In obese patients, CYP2E1 activity is reported to be induced, thereby potentially worsening the safety profile of acetaminophen. Is it true that haste is sneaking into medicine? In this article, it is argued that it mainly concerns the perception of being rushed, which is caused by a loss of autonomy of the modern physician. In the fifties, physicians were busy as well, but because they enjoyed a greater degree of autonomy compared to their contemporary colleagues, they did not experience this in a negative way. Due to increased bureaucracy and the introduction of market dynamics, the medical profession has lost autonomy, which in turn led to a loss of job satisfaction.

David Sackett, the father of evidence-based medicine (EBM), died recently - exactly 25 years after the term EBM was coined. This coincidence calls for reflection on the historical significance of EBM and on Sackett's role. The rise of EBM appears to be part of a much broader development: a shift from 'trust in the experts' to 'trust in numbers' that occurred under the pressures of the socio-political conditions of the late twentieth century.

α-Isopropylmalate synthase (α-IPMS) is a multi-domain protein catalysing the condensation of α-ketoisovalerate (α-KIV) and acetyl coenzyme A (AcCoA) to form α-isopropylmalate. This reaction is the first committed step in the leucine biosynthetic pathway in bacteria and plants, and α-IPMS is allosterically regulated by this amino acid. Existing crystal structures of α-IPMS from Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MtuIPMS) indicate that this enzyme has a strikingly different domain arrangement in each monomer of the homodimeric protein.

The equilibrium configuration of a nonwetted three fluid system takes the form of a floating liquid lens, where the lens resides between an upper and lower phase. The axisymmetric profiles of the three interfaces can be computed by solving the nonlinear Young-Laplace differential equation for each interface with coupled boundary conditions at the contact line. Here we describe a numerical method applicable to sessile or pendant lenses and provide a free, downloadable Mathematica Player file which uses a graphical interface for analyzing and plotting lens profiles.
