Article Synopsis
  • Respiratory therapists (RTs) deal with death regularly but lack understanding of their own attitudes toward it, prompting a study to investigate how their work environment and personal traits affect these attitudes.
  • A survey comparing critical care RTs (CCRTs) and non-critical care RTs (non-CCRTs) found that non-CCRTs had a lower acceptance of death and a tendency to avoid thinking about it.
  • Results showed that CCRTs were more neutrally accepting of death, while factors such as experience, gender, mental health, and education on life and death significantly influenced RTs' attitudes.

Tracheal intubation poses a high risk of infection to medical staff due to Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) highly infectious nature. To mitigate this risk, various medical devices, including video laryngoscopy, have been developed to assist intubation. This study compared conventional laryngoscopy (Macintosh) and disposable video laryngoscopes (Medcaptain VS-10s and Honestmc Laryngoscope_LA10000) in terms of their use and operation processes.

Background: Patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) develop respiratory failure and progressive muscle weakness. The effects of pulmonary rehabilitation on the lung function of patients with ALS are unclear.

Objective: Through this meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs), we evaluated the effects of pulmonary rehabilitation, such as type of treatment, on patients with ALS and compared the effectiveness of this treatment.

Introduction: Determining the optimal time for performing a tracheostomy and weaning a patient off a ventilator is typically challenging for physicians, respiratory therapists, patients and patients' families.

Purpose: This study examined the factors influencing tracheostomy timing and ventilator weaning and described the transition-care placement of patients who experience unsuccessful ventilator weaning.

Methods: A retrospective design was employed, and 2 years of data were collected through a medical chart review performed at a hospital in Northern Taiwan.

Background/purpose: Long-term oxygen therapy has become standard treatment for patients with chronic respiratory insufficiency. However, patterns of long-term home oxygen therapy have not been well studied in Taiwan. Oxygen concentrator systems are commonly used in Taiwan, but liquid oxygen delivery systems are portable and may provide advantages over the concentrator system.

Article Synopsis
  • A study compared the effects of a regular versus a split-dose chemotherapy regimen (FMP) on patients with advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), revealing that split-dosing could reduce adverse effects like severe neutropenia.
  • Results showed that patients receiving split-dose FMP had a similar overall survival rate to those on regular FMP, but significantly lower side effects, leading to a recommendation for split-dosing in treatment.
  • Key predictors of overall survival included liver function status, presence of metastasis, and achieving disease control, with notable improvement noted in patients who had anti-hepatitis C virus antibodies.

Heterogeneous nuclear ribonucleoprotein K (hnRNP K) is a multifunctional protein known to be involved in the regulation of transcription, translation, nuclear transport, and signal transduction. To systematically obtain insight into mechanisms of hnRNP K activities, we set out to identify protein factors that interact with hnRNP K by using glutathione S-transferase-hnRNP K affinity chromatography followed by liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry/mass spectrometry analysis. Several partner proteins in the K562 cell lysates were identified through this method.
