Traumatic irreducible dislocation of the fifth metatarsophalangeal joint in pediatrics: case report and clinical experience.

Dislocation of the metatarsophalangeal joint (MTPJ) by trauma commonly occurs in adults. Most dislocations of the MTPJ could be reduced by closed reduction. However, isolated traumatic irreducible dislocation of the fifth MTPJ is an extremely rare injury, particularly in children.

Long-term effects of primary hyperparathyroidism and parathyroidectomy on kidney function.

Importance: Limited evidence supports kidney dysfunction as an indication for parathyroidectomy in asymptomatic primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT).

Objective: To investigate the natural history of kidney function in PHPT and whether parathyroidectomy alters renal outcomes.

Association between MnSOD Activity and Cognitive Impairment in Unmedicated First-Episode Schizophrenia: Regulated by Ala-9Val Gene Polymorphism.

The imbalance between pro-oxidants and antioxidants is thought to be responsible for aging and cognitive impairment in many degenerative diseases, including schizophrenia (SZ). As the first antioxidant enzyme to detoxify superoxide radicals in mitochondria, manganese superoxide dismutase (MnSOD) activity and its functional polymorphism of Ala-9Val have been found to be associated with SZ. In this study, we explored the association between MnSOD activity, Ala-9Val polymorphism and cognitive dysfunction in unmedicated first-episode (UMFE) SZ patients, which has not been examined.

Health-related quality of life associated with warfarin and direct oral anticoagulants in venous thromboembolism.

Introduction: Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is commonly treated with oral anticoagulants, including warfarin or direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs). Although DOACs are associated with favorable treatment satisfaction, few studies have assessed whether quality of life differs between DOAC and warfarin users.

Materials And Methods: We invited adults enrolled in two California-based integrated health care delivery systems and with a history of VTE between January 1, 2015 and June 30, 2018 to complete a survey on their experience with anticoagulants.

Association of depressive symptoms with cognitive impairment in patients with never-treated first-episode schizophrenia: Analysis of the Depression in Schizophrenia in China (DISC) study.

Objective: Depressive symptoms and cognitive dysfunction are common in patients with schizophrenia and depressive disorder. This study aimed at exploring whether and how depressive symptoms were correlated with neuro-cognitive impairment in patients with never-treated first-episode (NTFE) schizophrenia.

Methods: The Repeatable Battery for the Assessment of Neuropsychological Status (RBANS) was administered to 79 patients and 80 healthy controls to assess neuropsychological function.

Age of acquisition effects in reading Chinese: evidence in favour of the arbitrary mapping hypothesis.

Two experiments explored the locus of the age of acquisition (AoA) effects in the processing of Chinese characters and tested the arbitrary mapping hypothesis of AoA effects. In Experiment 1, AoA and predictability from orthography to pronunciation of Chinese characters were manipulated in a naming task. Results showed a larger AoA effect for characters from low-predictive families than for characters from high-predictive families.
