Ovarian primary carcinoid tumors of pure histological type can pose a significant diagnostic challenge in its separation from metastatic carcinoids from the gastrointestinal tract. Yet, their clinical management and prognosis are drastically different. At the molecular level, ovarian primary carcinoid tumors are thought to be of germ cell origin, frequently after the first meiotic division.

It is costly to sample all air pollutants of a general community. Air sampling should be conducted based on a practical assessment strategy and monitoring plan. In Hong Kong, the Environmental Protection Department (HKEPD) launched an Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) certification scheme to grade workplace IAQ as 'Excellent' or 'Good' by measuring the levels of nine common indoor air pollutants, namely carbon dioxide (CO(2)), carbon monoxide (CO), respirable suspended particulates (RSP), nitrogen dioxide (NO(2)), ozone (O(3)), formaldehyde (HCHO), total volatile organic compounds (TVOC), radon (Rn), and airborne bacteria count (ABC).

Expression of gastrointestinal biomarkers MUC1, MUC2, MUC5AC, small-intestinal mucin antigen (SIMA), villin, and CDX2 has been studied in colorectal adenocarcinoma (CRC). Little is known, however, about their expression in small-intestinal adenocarcinoma (SIA). We immunohistochemically compared 30 SIAs with 48 CRCs for the expression of these biomarkers.

Recent work has suggested that the 3a protein may play a structural role in the viral life cycle, although the mechanisms for this remain uncharacterized. Here, the expression of the 3a protein in various in vitro systems is shown, it has been localized to the Golgi region and its membrane topology in transfected cells has been confirmed.

In order to maintain an acceptable Indoor Air Quality (IAQ), policies, strategies and guidelines have been developed worldwide and exposure concentrations of the indoor radon have been specified. Mapping indoor radon levels for a region could be done with intensive measurements on a large number of samples. To obtain the most accurate estimate of the levels with the uncertainties specified, a statistical model has been developed in this study to predict the fractions of samples in a region having an average radon level above the action levels of 150Bqm(-3) and 200Bqm(-3).

EH patients' responses to these factors may vary, depending on differences in their genes that determine the physiological systems that mediate the response. The purpose of this investigation was to clarify the contributions of genetic background and lifestyle to EH through an association study using some common single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) that should have functional effects on EH phenotypes.

The traditional approach has been to collect fetal blood from decapitation of fetuses. The new method of collecting fetal blood is from the fetal heart, and makes it possible to obtain pure fetal blood at near-term in rodents for fetal studies. This study also demonstrated a significant difference of fetal blood oxygen levels between the traditional and new methods of blood collection.

Our pilot investigation suggested that the development of this tumor might require a paternally derived X chromosome and the absence of a Y chromosome. Twenty cases of placental site trophoblastic tumor were included in this study.

Background: Chinese herbal medicine (CHM) is a common complementary therapy used by patients with cancer for reduction of chemotherapy-induced toxic effects. This study applied the highest standard of clinical trial methodology to examine the role of CHM in reducing chemotherapy-induced toxicity, while maintaining a tailored approach to therapy.
Patients And Methods: Patients with early-stage breast or colon cancer who required postoperative adjuvant chemotherapy were eligible for the study.
Objectives: To evaluate the applicability of the University of California Los Angeles Integrated Staging System (UISS) in predicting the prognosis of Chinese patients with localized renal cell carcinoma after radical nephrectomy, with reference to that reported by Patard et al in an international multicenter study (J Clin Oncol 2004, 22:3316-3322).
Methodology: One hundred and twenty-eight Chinese patients with localized renal cell carcinoma were stratified into low risk (LR), intermediate risk (IR) and high risk (HR) groups according to the UISS, based on the TMN staging and Fuhrman grading of the tumor and the Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group performance status of the patients. The survival curves of each risk group were then calculated.

We present a formalism for the wave characteristics in gratings and periodic dielectrics based on the linear superposition of retarded fields. The idea is based on the physical picture that an incident field affects the charges in the material forming the gratings and hence leads to oscillating current and charge densities, which in turn generate more fields via the retarded potential. A set of self-consistent equations for the electric field and current and charge densities is derived.

The dynamical process of opinion formation within a model using a local majority opinion updating rule is studied numerically in networks with the small-world geometrical property. The network is one in which shortcuts are added to randomly chosen pairs of nodes in an underlying regular lattice. The presence of a small number of shortcuts is found to shorten the time to reach a consensus significantly.

Purpose Of Review: Nuchal translucency is one of the important markers in the first trimester during antenatal screening for fetal Down's syndrome. With the observation of alterations in biochemical markers in pregnancies conceived after assisted reproduction, this review presents current information related to the thickness of nuchal translucency in these pregnancies.
Recent Findings: Early small studies did not demonstrate any discrepancy in the thickness of nuchal translucency in fetuses from assisted reproduction and from spontaneous pregnancies, but there has been recent evidence to suggest an increased level of nuchal translucency in singletons from various modes of assisted-reproduction technology.
Objectives: The aim of the current study was to evaluate and compare two different behavioral rehabilitation programs in improving the quality of life in cardiac patients in Hong Kong.
Design And Setting: The current study was carried out in the outpatient unit of Occupational Therapy Department in the United Christian Hospital, Hong Kong. Convenience sampling with referral from the cardiac specialty was used in the present study.
Objectives: As opposed to biochemical markers of Down syndrome, nuchal translucency (NT) was once thought to be a more reliable screening marker for high order multiple pregnancies and pregnancies conceived after assisted conception. Recent data suggested that NT in singleton fetuses from assisted reproduction technology (ART) was thicker than those from singleton pregnancies. The present study compared the thickness of NT in dichorionic twins from natural conception and assisted reproduction.
