Pro-tumoral and immunosuppressive M2-like tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs) contribute to tumor progression, recurrence and distal metastasis. However, current TAMs-modulating therapeutic strategies often encounter challenges including insufficient immune activation, weak antigen presentation ability and unsatisfactory antitumor immune performance. Herein, cyclic RGD peptide functionalized and manganese doped eumelanin-like nanocomposites (RMnMels) are reported for combined hyperthermia-immunotherapy against PC3 prostate cancer.

Surfactants are commonly incorporated into amorphous formulations to improve the wetting and dissolution of hydrophobic drugs. Using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, we find that a surfactant can significantly enrich at the surface of an amorphous drug, up to 100% coverage, wihout phase separation in the bulk. We compared four different surfactants (Span 80, Span 20, Tween 80, and Tween 20) in the same host acetaminophen and the same surfactant Span 80 in four different hosts (acetaminophen, lumefantrine, posaconazole, and itraconazole).

Background: The expression of microRNAs (miRNAs) in the serum of B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (B-ALL) patients is abnormal. Nevertheless, the underlying mechanism remains unclear. Recent studies indicate that the methylation state of circulating cell-free DNA (cfDNA) is different between cancer patients and healthy individuals.

The goal of Project GAUSS (Genesis of Asteroids and evolUtion of the Solar System) is to return samples from the dwarf planet Ceres. Ceres is the most accessible candidate of ocean worlds and the largest reservoir of water in the inner Solar System. It shows active volcanism and hydrothermal activities in recent history.

Histological analysis of carotid atherosclerotic plaque tissue specimens is a widely used method for studying the diagnosis of ischemic heart disease and stroke. Understanding the physiological and pathological mechanisms of carotid atherosclerotic plaque is of great significance for the effective prevention and treatment of plaque formation and rupture. In this work, we adapted a self-attention generative adversarial model to virtually stain label-free human carotid atherosclerotic plaque tissue sections into corresponding H&E stained sections.

Drug resistance is a major hurdle for the effectiveness of tamoxifen (TAM) to provide clinical benefit. Therefore, it is essential to identify a sensitizer that could be used to improve TAM efficacy in treating TAM-resistant breast cancer. Here, we investigated the ability of baicalein to reverse TAM resistance.

Objective: To study urinary stone composition patterns in different populations around the world.

Materials And Methods: Data were collected by reviewing charts of 1204 adult patients of 10 countries with renal or ureteral stones (> 18 years) in whom a stone analysis was done and available. Any method of stone analysis was accepted, but the methodology had to be registered.

The integrity of lysosomes is of vital importance to survival of tumor cells. We demonstrated that LW-218, a synthetic flavonoid, induced rapid lysosomal enlargement accompanied with lysosomal membrane permeabilization in hematological malignancy. LW-218-induced lysosomal damage and lysosome-dependent cell death were mediated by cathepsin D, as the lysosomal damage and cell apoptosis could be suppressed by depletion of cathepsin D or lysosome alkalization agents, which can alter the activity of cathepsins.

We present results from an analysis of all data taken by the BICEP2, Keck Array, and BICEP3 CMB polarization experiments up to and including the 2018 observing season. We add additional Keck Array observations at 220 GHz and BICEP3 observations at 95 GHz to the previous 95/150/220  GHz dataset. The Q/U maps now reach depths of 2.

The distribution of water in the Moon's interior carries implications for the origin of the Moon, the crystallization of the lunar magma ocean and the duration of lunar volcanism. The Chang'e-5 mission returned some of the youngest mare basalt samples reported so far, dated at 2.0 billion years ago (Ga), from the northwestern Procellarum KREEP Terrane, providing a probe into the spatiotemporal evolution of lunar water.

Purpose: Histological analysis of human carotid atherosclerotic plaques is critical in understanding atherosclerosis biology and developing effective plaque prevention and treatment for ischemic stroke. However, the histological staining process is laborious, tedious, variable, and destructive to the highly valuable atheroma tissue obtained from patients.

Procedures: We proposed a deep learning-based method to simultaneously transfer bright-field microscopic images of unlabeled tissue sections into equivalent multiple sections of the same samples that are virtually stained.

Article Synopsis
  • Imaging flow cytometry allows for the visualization and quantification of cells and fluorescent signals, enhancing cell analysis.
  • The new method, called "immuno-flowFISH," merges fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) with cell phenotyping to study genomic changes in various cytological samples without needing prior cell isolation.
  • This technique has proven useful in studying chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), enabling the detection of significant chromosomal changes linked to prognosis and treatment needs, enhancing the precision of cytogenomic analyses.

Objective: MiR-1224 has been reported to exhibit abnormal expression in several tumors. However, the expressing pattern and roles of miR-1224 in gastric cancer (GC) remain unclear. Our current research aimed to explore the potential involvement of miR-1224 in the GC progression.

T-cell malignancies are still difficult to treat due to a paucity of plans that target critical dependencies. Drug-induced cellular senescence provides a permanent cell cycle arrest during tumorigenesis and cancer development, particularly when combined with senolytics to promote apoptosis of senescent cells, which is an innovation for cancer therapy. Here, our research found that wogonin, a well-known natural flavonoid compound, not only had a potential to inhibit cell growth and proliferation but also induced cellular senescence in T-cell malignancies with nonlethal concentration.

N,2'-O-dimethyladenosine (mAm) is an abundant RNA modification located adjacent to the 5'-end of the mRNA 7-methylguanosine (mG) cap structure. mA methylation on 2'-O-methylated A at the 5'-ends of mRNAs is catalyzed by the methyltransferase Phosphorylated CTD Interacting Factor 1 (PCIF1). The role of mAm and the function of PCIF1 in regulating host-pathogens interactions are unknown.

For the segmentation task of stroke lesions, using the attention U-Net model based on the self-attention mechanism can suppress irrelevant regions in an input image while highlighting salient features useful for specific tasks. However, when the lesion is small and the lesion contour is blurred, attention U-Net may generate wrong attention coefficient maps, leading to incorrect segmentation results. To cope with this issue, we propose a dual-path attention compensation U-Net (DPAC-UNet) network, which consists of a primary network and auxiliary path network.

Conventional fluorescence molecular tomography (FMT) reconstruction requires photons penetrating the whole object, which limits its applications to small animals. However, by utilizing reflective photons, fluorescence distribution near the surface could be reconstructed regardless of the object size, which may extend the applications of FMT to surgical navigation and so on. Therefore, time-domain reflective fluorescence molecular tomography (TD-rFMT) is proposed in this paper.

Granular cell tumor (GCT) is a rare benign soft tissue neoplasm that develops primarily in the skin and subcutaneous tissue of the head and neck, frequently in the tongue, but has not been observed in the auditory meatus. These tumors generally present as slow-growing nodules with few unique clinical or radiological features, and so must be confirmed by pathological examination. Here, we present the case of a 62-year-old female with right hearing loss and benign GCT in the right auditory meatus initially misdiagnosed as cholesteatoma.
