Following systemic inflammation, the lung induces an isoenzyme of heme oxygenase (HO-1), catalyzing carbon monoxide (CO) production through breakdown of heme molecules. However, it is still debated why the paradoxical arterio-venous carboxyhemoglobin (COHb) difference occurs only during critical illness but not in healthy volunteers. To elucidate whether oxygen fractions at (sub-)physiologic ranges alter the affinity of CO to hemoglobin (Hb), we performed an in vitro laboratory experiment, in which we exposed venous blood samples to fixed CO-doses at incrementing oxygen fractions (FiO2).

Moreover, conventional fetal imaging by the transvaginal or transabdominal routes may be impossible in some high-risk pregnancies. The purpose of our study in sheep was to assess the potential of a phased-array intravascular US catheter for intra-amniotic fetal echocardiography.

Major disadvantages of these devices are thromboembolic events, bleeding complications, infections, and malfunctions. View Article and Find Full Text PDFObjective: A biallelic polymorphism within the human interleukin (IL)-6 gene promoter region (-174 G/C) has been shown to affect IL-6 transcription in vitro and IL-6 plasma levels in healthy adults. Because IL-6 is excessively released into the circulation during sepsis and closely correlates with the clinical course, we studied whether this promoter polymorphism has an effect on the incidence and/or outcome of sepsis.
Design: Population-based association study in critically ill patients and healthy controls.
Background: In patients undergoing colonoscopy, naloxone has vasodilative properties. However, it remains unclear whether this effect is mediated by central or peripheral mechanisms. The aim of this study was to investigate whether these effects are mediated by an effect of naloxone on the central nervous system.
