Introduction: Amphotericin B lipid complex (ABLC) is an effective antifungal agent for treating invasive fungal infections (IFIs) even though its formulation is associated with potential adverse events, including those related to its infusion. This study aimed to analyze the incidence of acute infusion-related side effects (IRSE) associated with ABLC and their relationship with the profile of patients with oncohematological disease admitted in Brazilian reference tertiary hospitals.
Methods: This is an observational retrospective study that included clinical records of patients hospitalized, in a period of 6 years, diagnosed with probable or proved IFI and treated with at least two doses of ABLC.
Invasive fusariosis (IF) is a life-threatening opportunistic infection that affects vulnerable hosts. We conducted a multicenter and multinational retrospective study to characterize the natural history and clinical management of IF in pediatric cancer patients. We selected patients <18 years old who were sequentially hospitalized in 10 Latin American medical centers with a diagnosis of IF between 2002 and 2021.

During the 2020 global health crisis, efforts intensified to optimize the production and delivery of molecular diagnostic kits for detecting SARS-CoV-2. During this period, RT-LAMP emerged as a significant focus.

Purpose: Data on the real-life use of amphotericin B lipid complex (ABLC) compared with other available formulations are limited. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness, tolerability, and safety of different amphotericin B (AMB) intravenously administered in the context of hospital practice for the treatment of invasive fungal infections (IFI) and to provide new insights into the profile of ABLC.
Methods: This is a multicenter, retrospective, observational study conducted at 10 tertiary Brazilian hospitals.
Candidemia remains a major public health challenge due to its high mortality rates, especially in developing countries. Monitoring epidemiological trends may provide insights for better clinical outcomes. This study aimed to describe trends in the epidemiology, therapeutic practices, and mortality in candidemia through a retrospective comparative analysis between two surveillance cohorts of all candidemic adults at eleven tertiary hospitals in Brazil, from 2010-2011 (Period I) versus 2017-2018 (Period II).

Methods: We performed a large multicenter, retrospective cohort study including onco-hematological neutropenic patients with PA BSI conducted across 34 centers in 12 countries (January 2006−May 2018). Episodes occurring in hematologic patients were compared to those developing in patients with ST.

All COVID-19 non-oncological and solid malignancies patients reached 100% seroconversion at day 14, while less than half of the hematological patients were seroconverted at the same time point. Despite the limited number and variability of the patient's cohort, we conclude that there is a delayed seroconversion in the hematological malignancies group, which may be linked to changes in the hematological parameters, immune suppression and/or oncological treatments that are typically associated with these patients.

This was a multinational, retrospective cohort study of neutropenic onco-hematological patients with PA bloodstream infection (BSI) (2006−2018). The effect of appropriate empirical combination therapy, appropriate monotherapy and inappropriate empirical antibiotic therapy [IEAT] on 30-day case-fatality was assessed only in patients with PA bacteremic pneumonia.

Through a national multicenter study, we aimed to describe the impact of COVID-19 on the survival of HSCT recipients in Brazil. Eighty-six patients with a confirmed diagnosis of SARS-CoV-2 (92% by RT-PCR) were included.

Brazil has a universal public health system (Sistema Unico de Saúde-SUS), being the main source of care for 75% of the population. Therefore, a saturation of the system was foreseen with the continuous increase of cases.

Here, the SARS-CoV-2 nucleocapsid protein was expressed in Escherichia coli and purified to homogeneity and high yield using a single chromatography step. The purified SARS-CoV-2 nucleocapsid protein was used to develop an indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay for the identification of human SARS-CoV-2 seroconverts.

We conducted a multicenter, prospective study to investigate the predictive factors and treatment outcomes of CDI in hospitalized patients and to performed phenotypical and molecular characterization of CD strains. A total of 361 diarrheic patients at 5 hospitals from different regions of the country were enrolled.

Background: SARS-CoV-2 Reverse Transcription Loop-mediated Isothermal Amplification (RT-LAMP) colorimetric detection is a sensitive and specific point-of-care molecular biology technique used to detect the virus in only 30 min. In this manuscript we have described a few nuances of the technique still not properly described in the literature: the presence of three colors clusters; the correlation of the viral load with the color change; and the importance of using an internal control to avoid false-negative results.
Methods: To achieve these findings, we performed colorimetric RT-LAMP assays of 466 SARS-CoV-2 RT-qPCR validated clinical samples, with color quantification measured at 434 nm and 560 nm.
Immunological methods to detect SARS-CoV-2 seroconversion in humans are important to track COVID-19 cases and the humoral response to SARS-CoV-2 infections and immunization to future vaccines. The aim of this work was to develop a simple chromogenic magnetic bead-based immunoassay which allows rapid, inexpensive, and quantitative detection of human antibodies against SARS-CoV-2 in serum, plasma, or blood. Recombinant 6xHis-tagged SARS-CoV-2 Nucleocapsid protein was mobilized on the surface of Ni magnetic beads and challenged with serum or blood samples obtained from controls or COVID-19 cases.

An epidemiologic study conducted in Brazil reported a high incidence of IFD in haematologic patients, and invasive fusariosis was the leading IFD. A limitation of that study was that galactomannan was not available for at least half of the study period.

In the absence of a matched related donor, allogeneic HSCT has been associated with increased risk of infectious complications. This review analyzes the bioecological model of human development as a comprehensive framework of adolescent antisocial behavior. Variables such as family and peers with antisocial backgrounds, antisocial peer attitudes, alcohol consumption, offensive behavior, education level, perception of safety in the community, and attention deficit hyperactive disorder, are discussed. This review supports the bioecological model as a plausible framework for understanding antisocial behavior during adolescence.

Introduction: (PA) has historically been one of the major causes of severe sepsis and death among neutropenic cancer patients. There has been a recent increase of multidrug-resistant PA (MDRPA) isolates that may determine a worse prognosis, particularly in immunosuppressed patients. The aim of this study is to establish the impact of antibiotic resistance on the outcome of neutropenic onco-haematological patients with PA bacteraemia, and to identify the risk factors for MDRPA bacteraemia and mortality.
