The origin of ovarian Leydig cells: a possibly solved enigma?

Over the years, the origin of ovarian Leydig cells has been, and still is, a topic subject to deep debate. Seven years ago, we proposed that this origin resided in intraneural elements that came from a possible reservoir of neural crest cells, a reservoir that may be located in the ganglia of the celiac plexus. We believe we have found the evidence necessary to prove this hypothesis.

Multi-Institution Case Series of Pediatric Patients with Laparoscopic Repair of Morgagni Hernia.

Introduction: Morgagni Larray hernia (MLH) is a very rare disease, which accounts for less than 5% of all congenital diaphragmatic hernias. Laparoscopic repair has been widely used and accepted as a treatment option for patients with this disease. The purpose of our study is to analyze the outcomes of patients with MLH who underwent laparoscopic repair, and to evaluate their postoperative course for outcome, morbidity, and mortality.

The MHC class I chain-related protein A (MICA) is an inducible molecule almost not expressed by normal cells but strongly up-regulated in tumor cells. MICA-expressing cells are recognized by natural killer (NK) cells, CD8+ abTCR and gdTCR T lymphocytes through the NKG2D receptor. Engagement of NKG2D by MICA triggers IFN-g secretion and cytotoxicity against malignant cells.

Syndromic nevoid hypermelanosis: description of seven cases with a 10-year follow up.

Skin lesions can often be the only sign of an underlying systemic abnormality which will require further investigation. Several syndromic conditions are diagnosed after their cutaneous marker, which is in most cases a nevus. We report a neurocutaneous condition which we named "syndromic nevoid hypermelanosis" (SNH).

Actinomyces meyeri cutaneous actinomycosis is a very rare disease. It often results from contiguous dissemination of an underlying focus. We report a case of pulmonary actinomicosis with secondary cutaneous involvement which led to the diagnosis.

Hydraulic integration and shrub growth form linked across continental aridity gradients.

Both engineered hydraulic systems and plant hydraulic systems are protected against failure by resistance, reparability, and redundancy. A basic rule of reliability engineering is that the level of independent redundancy should increase with increasing risk of fatal system failure. Here we show that hydraulic systems of plants function as predicted by this engineering rule.

Prevalence of thyroid autoimmunity in patients with pemphigus vulgaris.

Among bullous diseases, pemphigus vulgaris (PV) is a classical variety of this type of skin disorders. To establish the real prevalence of thyroid abnormalities in such a disease, a prospective study was developed. For this reason, thyroid evaluation was performed in 15 consecutive patients who attended the Dermatology Clinic for PV and in a group of 15 healthy volunteers (Control Group) matched by age and gender.

Alagille syndrome: cutaneous manifestations in 38 children.

The Alagille syndrome is one of the most common inherited disorders causing chronic liver disease during childhood. During the 1990s, 38 children with Alagille syndrome were evaluated at two pediatric centers in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Characteristic clinical, humoral, and cutaneous features were analyzed.

Background: Necrotizing gangrene of the genitalia and perineum is a fulminant, life-threatening condition. This infection is usually polymicrobial and may be idiopathic or secondary to local trauma or surgery. Histologically, it is characterized by obliterative endarteritis and thrombosis of the subcutaneous vessels, fascial necrosis, and leukocytic infiltration.
