Objective: The aim of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of submucosal 8 mg (2 mL) dexamethasone (DEX) on postoperative pain, swelling, chewing efficiency, trismus, healing, and discomfort after periodontal flap surgery (PFS).

Methods: In this randomized controlled split-mouth study, 25 patients underwent PFS in the mandible, whereby postoperative, submucosal DEX was injected to the surgical field to the test group and submucosal normal saline was applied to the control group. Pain was evaluated using the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) and the 101-point numeric rate scale in the first 8 h after PFS and on the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 7th days, whereas swelling, chewing efficiency, trismus, healing, discomfort and analgesic consumption were evaluated preoperatively on the 1st, 2nd and 7th days.

Although cancer cachexia is classically characterized as a systemic inflammatory disorder, emerging evidence indicates that weight loss also associates with local tissue inflammation. We queried the regulation of this inflammation and its causality to cachexia by exploring skeletal muscle, whose atrophy strongly associates with poor outcomes. Using multiple mouse models and patient samples, we show that cachectic muscle is marked by enhanced innate immunity.

Objective: To determine alterations in the crista galli (CG) size in fetuses with advancing weeks.

Methods: Skull bases of 32 fetuses (11 males/21 females) aged 17 to 32 weeks in utero were included in the study. The width (width of CG), height (height of CG), and length (length of CG) of CG were measured, and also olfactory fossa depth (OFD) was measured to determine the relation of CG with OFD.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to determine the exact position of the posterior clinoid process (PCP) in fetuses by measuring its distances to various reference points in the skull base of 32 fetuses (11 males and 21 females) aged 17 to 32 weeks.
  • Measurements showed that the PCP’s distance from various skull features differed slightly by gender and increased significantly with gestational age, indicating growth dynamics of these distances.
  • The research provides linear equations that can be used to estimate how the distances from the PCP change as the fetus develops, which may aid in understanding anatomical variations in fetuses.

Purpose: To describe pneumatization and topographic position of the posterior clinoid process (PCP) in healthy children when approaching the anterior and middle fossae.

Methods: The study consisted of computed tomography images of 180 pediatric patients (90 males / 90 females), aged 1-18 years. The presence or absence of PCP pneumatization was noted, and the distances of certain landmarks to PCP were measured.

  • Tamoxifen is a common treatment for a type of breast cancer, but some patients can become resistant to it, meaning the medicine doesn't work anymore.
  • A long non-coding RNA called LINC00152 stops cells from dying in a specific way when tamoxifen is used, which makes the cancer harder to treat.
  • Researchers discovered that blocking LINC00152 can help make tamoxifen work better by changing how certain proteins and chemicals behave in the cancer cells, leading to more effective treatment.

Herein, tannic acid-tethered cellulose was developed as an efficient and selective sorbent for Mn⁺ removal from aqueous solutions. The modified cellulose was characterized through scanning electron microscopy, infrared spectroscopy, and elemental analyses. Sorption performance was evaluated using various parameters, including pH, initial Mn⁺ concentration, contact time, and the presence of interfering ions.

Background/aim: In open heart surgery, sternotomy causes inflammation in tissues, and inflammation causes postoperative pain. This study aims to examine the effects of bilateral erector spinae plane (ESP) blocks on postoperative extubation time and laboratory parameters in open heart surgery.

Materials And Methods: The study was managed using retrospective data from 85 patients who underwent open-heart surgery.

This study aims to investigate the impacts of factors, including textural properties, surface roughness, and contact angle, on the cleaning performance of food soils and develop a preliminary mathematical model to predict the cleaning score, depending on the soil-surface properties. The force required to remove soil from the surface was determined by a texture analyzer equipped with a newly designed probe. Potato puree and egg yolk soils showed high adhesive forces compared to other deposits.

Purpose: This examination aimed to display the size and topographic position of the Vidian canal (VC) in normal children.

Methods: 180 pediatric subjects aged 1-18 years were included this computed tomography examination. The distances of VC to certain landmarks, and VC length were measured.

Article Synopsis
  • Noncompressible truncal hemorrhage is a significant cause of preventable deaths outside of hospital settings, necessitating reliable animal models to test new treatments.
  • This study created a lethal injury model using Yorkshire swine, combining severe liver damage with controlled blood volume loss, resulting in rapid and consistent outcomes.
  • The developed model consistently led to high mortality rates within a short timeframe, making it a valuable tool for evaluating interventions for severe abdominal bleeding.

Following the great success of various deep learning methods in image and object classification, the biomedical image processing society is also overwhelmed with their applications to various automatic diagnosis cases. Unfortunately, most of the deep learning-based classification attempts in the literature solely focus on the aim of extreme accuracy scores, without considering interpretability, or patient-wise separation of training and test data. For example, most lung nodule classification papers using deep learning randomly shuffle data and split it into training, validation, and test sets, causing certain images from the Computed Tomography (CT) scan of a person to be in the training set, while other images of the same person to be in the validation or testing image sets.

Background: To effectively control the HIV epidemic and meet global targets, policymakers recommend the rapid initiation of antiretroviral therapy (ART). Our study aims to investigate the effect of rapid ART programs on individuals diagnosed with HIV, considering varying coverage and initiation days after diagnosis, and compare it to standard-of-care ART treatment in Turkey.

Methods: We used a dynamic compartmental model to simulate the dynamics of HIV infection in Turkey.

There is limited data on the relationship of miRNAs with parameters that may affect surgical management or reflect tumour prognosis. It was aimed to evaluate serum miRNA levels in breast carcinoma cases and reveal the relationship between these levels and prognosis-related factors such as the histological type of the tumour, estrogen receptor, progesterone receptor, Ki-67 index, HER-2neu, E-cadherin, tumour size, CK5/6, CA15.3 levels, number of tumour foci, number of metastatic lymph nodes, and status of receiving neoadjuvant therapy.

Cluster analysis is one of the most widely used exploratory methods for visualization and grouping of gene expression patterns across multiple samples or treatment groups. Although several existing online tools can annotate clusters with functional terms, there is no all-in-one webserver to effectively prioritize genes/clusters using gene essentiality as well as congruency of mRNA-protein expression. Hence, we developed CAP-RNAseq that makes possible (1) upload and clustering of bulk RNA-seq data followed by identification, annotation and network visualization of all or selected clusters; and (2) prioritization using DepMap gene essentiality and/or dependency scores as well as the degree of correlation between mRNA and protein levels of genes within an expression cluster.

Aims: This study aimed to determine HIV incidence and prevalence in Turkey and to estimate the cost-effectiveness of improving testing and diagnosis in the next 20 years.

Background: HIV incidence in Turkey has been rapidly increasing in the last decade with a particularly high rate of infection for younger populations, which underscores the urgent need for a robust prevention program and improved testing capacity for HIV.

Methods: We developed a dynamic compartmental model of HIV transmission and progression among the Turkish population aged 15-64 and assessed the effect of improving testing and diagnosis.

Background: Management of pterygium is dependent on the grading of pterygium and its clinical presentation (inflamed or quiescent), and surgical excision is the final choice of treatment for the pterygium extending beyond the limbus. Infectious keratitis is one of the most commonly reported complications in recent years. To the best of our knowledge, Klebsiella keratitis after pterygium surgery has not been described in the current literature.
