The latest assessment of progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) has identified major obstacles, such as climate change, global instability and pandemics, which threaten efforts to achieve the SDGs even by 2050. Urgent action is needed, particularly to reduce poverty, hunger and climate change. In this context, microalgae are emerging as a promising solution, particularly in the context of food security and environmental sustainability.

Unlabelled: Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) has a mortality rate 1,3 to 3 times higher than the general population, with cardiovascular mortality accounting for 40-50% of cases. Currently, cardiovascular disease is considered an extraarticular manifestation of RA (OR: 1,5-4,0). Ultrasound measurement of the intima-media thickness (IMT) of the common carotid artery and the presence of atherosclerotic plaques (AP) is a non-invasive method and a surrogate marker of subclinical arteriosclerosis.

Thioredoxins play an essential role in regulating enzyme activity in response to environmental changes, especially in photosynthetic organisms. They are crucial for metabolic regulation in cyanobacteria, but the key redox-regulated central processes remain to be determined. Physiological, metabolic, and transcriptomic characterization of a conditional mutant of the essential Synechocystis sp.

Introduction. Medical device colonization by pathogenic microorganisms is a risk factor for increasing infections associated with health care and, consequently, the morbidity and mortality of intubated patients. In Colombia, fungal colonization of endotracheal tubes has not been described, and this information could lead to new therapeutic options for the benefit of patients.

Understanding the drivers of the onset, evolution, and end of eruptions and their impact on eruption style is critical in eruption forecasting and emergency management. The composition of erupted liquids is a key piece of the volcano puzzle, but untangling subtle melt variations remains an analytical challenge. Here, we apply rapid, high-resolution matrix geochemical analysis on samples of known eruption date spanning the entire 2021 La Palma eruption.

The formation of new genes during evolution is an important motor of functional innovation, but the rate at which new genes originate and the likelihood that they persist over longer evolutionary periods are still poorly understood questions. Two important mechanisms by which new genes arise are gene duplication and de novo formation from a previously noncoding sequence. Does the mechanism of formation influence the evolutionary trajectories of the genes? Proteins arisen by gene duplication retain the sequence and structural properties of the parental protein, and thus they may be relatively stable.

The species of Eilema Hübner, [1819] sensu lato, present in Europe and North Africa, are studied on the basis of morphological characteristics and molecular genetics. Images of adults, genitalia of both sexes, immature stages, as well as phylogenetic trees obtained from the combined analysis of three different genetic markers are presented. Data on life cycles, food plants, and geographic distribution are also included.

Elevated concentrations of nitrite are toxic to fish and can cause a myriad of well documented issues. However, the effects of sublethal concentrations of nitrite on fish health, and specifically, fish tissue microbiomes have not been studied. To test the effects of nitrite exposure, goldfish were exposed to sublethal concentrations of nitrite, 0.

Vitamin D has well-defined classical functions related to metabolism and bone health but also has non-classical effects that may influence pregnancy. Maternal morbidity remains a significant health care concern worldwide, despite efforts to improve maternal health. Nutritional deficiencies of vitamin D during pregnancy are related to adverse pregnancy outcomes, but the evidence base is difficult to navigate.

Background: Studies of the respiratory tract microbiome primarily focus on airway and lung microbial diversity, but it is still unclear how these microbial communities may be affected by intubation and long periods in intensive care units (ICU), an aspect that today could aid in the understanding of COVID19 progression and disease severity. This study aimed to explore and characterize the endotracheal tube (ETT) microbiome by analyzing ETT-associated microbial communities.

Methods: This descriptive study was carried out on adult patients subjected to invasive mechanical ventilation from 2 to 21 days.

The unicellular yeast (fission yeast) retains many of the splicing features observed in humans and is thus an excellent model to study the basic mechanisms of splicing. Nearly half the genes contain introns, but the impact of alternative splicing in gene regulation and proteome diversification remains largely unexplored. Here we leverage Oxford Nanopore Technologies native RNA sequencing (dRNA), as well as ribosome profiling data, to uncover the full range of polyadenylated transcripts and translated open reading frames.

Cyanobacteria evolved the ability to perform oxygenic photosynthesis using light energy to reduce CO from electrons extracted from water and form nutrients. These organisms also developed light-dependent redox regulation through the Trx system, formed by thioredoxins (Trxs) and thioredoxin reductases (TRs). Trxs are thiol-disulfide oxidoreductases that serve as reducing substrates for target enzymes involved in numerous processes such as photosynthetic CO fixation and stress responses.

Activity-dependent modifications of synaptic efficacies are a cellular substrate of learning and memory. Experimental evidence shows that these modifications are synapse specific and that the long-lasting effects are associated with the sustained increase in concentration of specific proteins like PKM However, such proteins are likely to diffuse away from their initial synaptic location and spread out to neighboring synapses, potentially compromising synapse specificity. In this article, we address the issue of synapse specificity during memory maintenance.

Anosmia, loss of smell, is a prevalent symptom of SARS-CoV-2 infection. Anosmia may be explained by several mechanisms driven by infection of non-neuronal cells and damage in the nasal epithelium rather than direct infection of olfactory sensory neurons (OSNs). Previously, we showed that viral proteins are sufficient to cause neuroimmune responses in the teleost olfactory organ (OO).

Cyanobacteria are ecologically one of the most prolific groups of photosynthetic prokaryotes in marine and freshwater habitats. They are primary producer microorganisms and are involved in the production of important secondary metabolites, including toxic compounds such as cyanotoxins. Environmental conditions promote massive growth of these microbes, causing blooms that can have critical ecological and public health implications.

Thioredoxins (Trxs) are disulfide oxidoreductases that regulate many biological processes. The m-type thioredoxin (TrxA) is the only Trx present in all oxygenic photosynthetic organisms. Extensive biochemical and proteomic analyses have identified many TrxA target proteins in different photosynthetic organisms.

With the objective of evaluating the concordance between the self-sampling of vaginal samples and the standard collection of endocervical samples for the identification of Chlamydia trachomatis, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Trichomonas vaginalis and Candida spp. carried out by health personnel in women from an urban-rural area of Peru, a prospective and cross-sectional study was carried out in 206 women of childbearing age, we identified some sexually transmitted infections such as Chlamydia trachomatis or Trichomonas vaginalis in 9/206 (4.4%).

To improve air quality in urban centers, vehicle Inspection and Maintenance (I/M) programs were created to identify highly polluting vehicles and force them to undergo mechanical maintenance. In this context, a methodology, based on a single measurement campaign using a Remote Sensing Device (RSD), is presented in this work to assess the reduction in vehicles emissions obtained from implementing I/M programs. As a case study, an RSD campaign was carried out in Mexico, specifically in Monterrey's Metropolitan Area (MMA).

The evolution of male signals and female preferences remains a central question in the study of animal communication. The sensory trap model suggests males evolve signals that mimic cues used in nonsexual contexts and thus manipulate female behavior to generate mating opportunities. Much evidence supports the sensory trap model, but how females glean reliable information from both mimetic signals and their model cues remains unknown.
