Protocol for a telephonic mixed methods study to understand needs and find solutions for bereaved dementia caregivers.

Introduction: Most caregivers of people living with dementia will experience bereavement within 10 years, but study of and support for their needs rarely persists following the death of their care recipients. A single model that leverages theoretical insights as well as observation from lived experience might help identify who will have greater difficulty following dementia-related bereavement and suggest core mechanisms to target to relieve clinical and subclinical consequences. The millions of existing bereaved dementia caregivers likely have considerable insight into ways to improve experience.

Bidirectional relationship between intraindividual changes in behavioral activation and intraindividual changes in postpartum depressive symptoms: A random intercept cross-lagged panel model.

According to Lewisohn's model of depression, decreases in behavioral activation (BA) occurring after facing a vital stressor may increase the risk of depression. Transition to parenthood is a potentially stressful life event that increases the risks of postpartum depression. We aimed to (a) describe the changes in BA and depressive symptomatology between the prepartum period, 1 month, 3 months, and 6 months postpartum and (b) evaluate the bidirectionality of the relationship between intraindividual changes in BA and intraindividual changes in depressive symptoms longitudinally.

Spirometric patterns in young and middle-aged adults: a 20-year European study.

Background: Understanding the natural history of abnormal spirometric patterns at different stages of life is critical to identify and optimise preventive strategies. We aimed to describe characteristics and risk factors of restrictive and obstructive spirometric patterns occurring before 40 years (young onset) and between 40 and 61 years (mid-adult onset).

Methods: We used data from the population-based cohort of the European Community Respiratory Health Survey (ECRHS).

72-Hour transport recovery of antimicrobial resistant Neisseria gonorrhoeae isolates using the InTray® GC method.

Recovery of Neisseria gonorrhoeae isolates exposed to a range of transport times and temperatures was quantitatively assessed for two transport devices, BioMed Diagnostics' InTray GC® and Copan Diagnostics' Liquid Amies Elution Swab (ESwab®) Collection and Transport System. Respective devices were inoculated with N. gonorrhoeae, exposed to simulated transport conditions and spread-plated from serial dilutions in duplicates onto chocolate agar in order to count CFU (colony-forming units) in the range of 25-250.

Group-Wise Cortical Surface Parcellation Based on Inter-Subject Fiber Clustering.

We present an automatic algorithm for the group-wise parcellation of the cortical surface. The method is based on the structural connectivity obtained from representative brain fiber clusters, calculated via an inter-subject clustering scheme. Preliminary regions were defined from cluster-cortical mesh intersection points.

Inter-Subject Clustering of Brain Fibers from Whole-Brain Tractography.

This work presents an effective multiple subject clustering method using whole-brain tractography datasets. The method is able to obtain fiber clusters that are representative of the population. The proposed approach first applies a fast intra-subject clustering algorithm on each subject obtaining the cluster centroids for all subjects.

Regular Physical Activity Levels and Incidence of Restrictive Spirometry Pattern: A Longitudinal Analysis of 2 Population-Based Cohorts.

We estimated the association between regular physical activity and the incidence of restrictive spirometry pattern. Forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV1), forced vital capacity (FVC), and physical activity were assessed in 2 population-based European cohorts (European Community Respiratory Health Survey: n = 2,757, aged 39-67 years; and Swiss Study on Air Pollution and Lung and Heart Diseases in Adults: n = 2,610, aged 36-82 years) first in 2000-2002 and again approximately 10 years later (2010-2013). Subjects with restrictive or obstructive spirometry pattern at baseline were excluded.

Objective: To evaluate the acceptability, tolerability, and effects on vulvovaginitis symptoms and signs of a non-soap, herbal-based intimate solution (Zelesse®).

Methods: We conducted a prospective, observational, multicenter study including adult women with symptoms and signs of vulvovaginitis with various etiologies, including candidiasis, trichomoniasis, bacterial vaginosis, and atrophic and irritative vaginitis. The presence and intensity of signs (edema, erythema, vaginal discharge) and symptoms (pruritus) of vulvovaginitis were evaluated before and after 5-15 days of daily use of Zelesse® alone or as a coadjuvant in antimicrobial therapy.

Cone Spacing Correlates With Retinal Thickness and Microperimetry in Patients With Inherited Retinal Degenerations.

Purpose: To determine whether high-resolution retinal imaging measures of macular structure correlate with visual function over 36 months in retinal degeneration (RD) patients and normal subjects.

Methods: Twenty-six eyes of 16 RD patients and 16 eyes of 8 normal subjects were studied at baseline; 15 eyes (14 RD) and 11 eyes (6 normal) were studied 36 months later. Adaptive Optics Scanning Laser Ophthalmoscopy (AOSLO) was used to identify regions of interest (ROIs) with unambiguous cones at baseline to measure cone spacing.

Laryngeal stenosis in children: Types, grades and treatment strategies.

Introduction: Laryngeal stenosis is infrequent in children and usually secondary to endotracheal intubation. The aims of this study were to review the outcomes of the distinct endoscopic and surgical procedures and to suggest a technical modification for one of them.

Objective To evaluate the efficacy, tolerability and acceptability of Zelesse®, an intimate hygiene wash solution, in the relief of the symptoms and signs of non-specific vulvovaginitis in paediatric patients. Methods The NINESSE Study was a prospective, observational, multicentre study involving females aged 2-8 years who attended paediatric offices with symptoms suggestive of non-specific vulvovaginitis. They were administered Zelesse® as a single treatment for 15 ± 5 days.

Stereological Estimates of Glutamatergic, GABAergic, and Cholinergic Neurons in the Pedunculopontine and Laterodorsal Tegmental Nuclei in the Rat.

The pedunculopontine tegmental nucleus (PPN) and laterodorsal tegmental nucleus (LDT) are functionally associated brainstem structures implicated in behavioral state control and sensorimotor integration. The PPN is also involved in gait and posture, while the LDT plays a role in reward. Both nuclei comprise characteristic cholinergic neurons intermingled with glutamatergic and GABAergic cells whose absolute numbers in the rat have been only partly established.

Long-Term Outcomes of Total Exudative Retinal Detachments in Stage 3B Coats Disease.

Purpose: To evaluate the long-term outcomes of treatment of total exudative retinal detachments (ERDs) secondary to Coats disease (stage 3B) and the role of vitrectomy.

Participants: A total of 16 eyes in 16 patients undergoing treatment for total ERDs secondary to Coats disease with at least 5 years of follow-up.

Methods: We retrospectively identified 45 consecutive pediatric patients with PFVS with posterior involvement treated from 2005 to 2016. The eyes that could be imaged with spectral domain optical coherence tomography were included, and images were correlated with best-corrected visual acuity.

Introduction: The aim of this study was to evaluate the dissolving efficacy of eucalyptol and orange oil solvents associated with passive ultrasonic activation (PUA) in zinc oxide-eugenol (ZOE) based and epoxy resin-based root canal sealers.
