Objective: To study the effects of various densities of middle ear fluids on acoustic immittance and elucidate the characteristics of this study that might be beneficial for clinical use in otitis media with effusion.
Study Design: Experimental, in vivo model.
Materials And Methods: The study was performed on 12 ears of six white Vienna rabbits.
Controlled trials concerning adjuvant dexamethasone therapy in bacterial meningitis do not point unequivocally to a beneficial effect on hearing ability. We investigated the remote adverse outcomes of pneumococcal meningitis and, if any, beneficial effects of adjuvant dexamethasone therapy on hearing ability. Fifty-five subjects who experienced pneumococcal meningitis between 1987-97 were divided into two groups as 25 subjects who did not receive dexamethasone (Group 1) and the remaining 30 subjects who did (Group 2).

Introduction: Many emergency departments (EDs) in the United States experience daily overcrowding, and a rapid influx of evacuees fleeing a disaster area can pose a substantial burden. Some of these evacuees may require ED care. However, others lack an alternative to the ED to address non-emergent medical concerns (prescription refills or outpatient referral).

The study includes 48 children with FC, and 55 healthy age matched control subjects, followed in Yüzüncü Yil University, Faculty of Medicine, Department of Pediatrics between October 2003 and June 2004. Blood CD3, CD4, CD8, CD16, CD19, and CD56 values were examined in the study and control groups.

Caudal dysgenesis syndrome is a rare cause of female pseudohermaphroditism. This syndrome consists of absent perineal and anal openings in association with ambiguous genitalia, urogenital, colonic, and lumbosacral anomalies. We report a case of caudal dysgenesis syndrome in an infant who had non-palpable testes, bifid scrotum, a phallus-like structure and urethral atresia.

Steady-state emission spectra show that the energy transfer from the dendrons to the core is highly efficient. Ultrafast time-resolved fluorescence measurements are performed at various excitation wavelengths to explore the possibility of assigning absorption band structures to exciton localizations.

The data are analyzed with a model based on the random walk of the exciton within the polymer chain and a long-range direct energy transfer between polymer and dye. We find that rapid intrachain energy migration toward complex sites with the dye leads to the highly efficient energy transfer, whereas the contribution from direct, long-range energy transfer is negligible.

Based on the abnormal findings the patient was diagnosed with Henoch-Schönlein purpura. On the 3rd day of admission, neurological examination showed ataxic gait, loss of deep tendon reflexes, and decreased (4/5) of muscle strength on all extremities.

However very little is known about their additional bronchodilator response to systemic steroids plus nebulized salbutamol in the early management in children. Asthmatic patients aged between 5-15 years were investigated in a double-blind, placebo-controlled fashion.

Introduction: Evidence suggests that regular disaster exercises have beneficial effects on subsequent mock and actual disaster responses. The purpose of this report is to describe a multiple hospital, bioterrorism exercise, evaluated by independent observers who used an evaluation template.
Methods: The overall tabletop exercise design included participation from 23 Joint Commission Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations hospitals, four health departments, and a representative from one federal agency.

Objective: To show the efficacy of intra-peritoneally administered trimetazidine to prevent gentamicin ototoxicity, which is still an important cause of profound deafness among children in different parts of the world.
Methods: Two groups of Swiss albino mice received daily intra-muscular injections of gentamicin for 30 days. One of the groups received trimetazidine intra peritoneally in addition to the gentamicin.

Objectives: In the United States (US), hospitals are required to have disaster plans and stage drills to test these plans in order to satisfy the Joint Accreditation Commission of Healthcare Organizations. The focus of this drill was to test if emergency response personnel, both prehospital and hospital, would identify a patient with a potentially communicable infectious disease, and activate their respective disaster plan.
Methods: Twelve urban/suburban emergency departments (ED) received patients via car and ambulance.
The conjugated polyelectrolyte PPESO3 features a poly(phenylene ethynylene) backbone substituted with anionic 3-sulfonatopropyloxy groups. PPESO3 is quenched very efficiently (KSV > 10(6) M(-1)) by cationic energy transfer quenchers in an amplified quenching process. In the present investigation, steady-state and picosecond time-resolved fluorescence spectroscopy are used to examine amplified quenching of PPESO3 by a series of cyanine dyes via singlet-singlet energy transfer.
